Overall Rating

Dodge Challenger coupe is an iconic car. The 2016 model still delivers the classic muscle performance in a modern version. The muscle car is powered by a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated engine making 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque.

The Dodge Challenger, just like its sibling the Charger, is another iconic muscle car from the yesteryears that still continues to be charming as before. The American carmaker took a break of 23 years after the 1983 Challenger completed its tenure in the market. After being relaunched in 2008, Dodge brought back the old design but in a bigger and better form.

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is a part of the third-generation model of the vehicle and is one of the very few muscular coupes available on the market. The coupe is powered by a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6 engine in its base form and makes 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. The coupe comes with a traditional RWD layout as well.

We recommend buying the SXT Plus trim which comes with all the comfort features along with the classic muscle car performance along with a decent fuel economy with the base V6. Along with this, we recommend adding a few packages to the coupe in the form of graphics from Mopar just to enhance the look.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

The Dodge Challenger comes in two main trim levels - The SXT and the R/T. The SXT gets the base V6 motor along with a handsome list of features including LED "halo" running lights, keyless ignition and entry, heated mirrors, cruise control, leather-wrapped steering wheel with tilt-and-telescopic function, and two-tone cloth upholstery among other features. The R/T gets some performance enhancements with a big 5.7-liter V8 motor along with 20-inch wheels and upgraded brakes. There is a Plus version for SXT, R/T, and the R/T Shaker trim which adds the Cold Weather Package and Sound Group 1 Package along with a rearview camera, foglights, power-adjustable steering wheels. and ventilated front seats among other features. The 2016 Dodge Challenger Hellcat is the ultimate offering from the lineup and it comes with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 motor with an insane 707 horsepower output along with an enhanced steering system, automatic wipers, and high-beam control for headlamps.

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is powered by a 3.6 liter naturally aspirated V6 engine in its base form and comes with variable valve technology. The engine makes 305 hp and 268 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, which directs all the power to the rear wheels. However, if you wish to have a little bit more fun with a manual gearbox, sadly you'll have to go for the R/T trim.

In the performance tests, the Dodge Challenger does the 0 to 60 sprint in 6.1 seconds and the standing quarter-mile and 14.5 seconds. It will then continue to its top speed of 155 mph. These are good numbers for a base muscle car with a naturally aspirated engine.

Exterior

The 2016 Dodge Challenger is a muscle car, and its dimensions justify its status in an appropriate manner. It's long and wide and looks bulky, very bulky. The Challenger features a functional aerodynamic hood that has dual hood scoops. It also features black accents across the car with grille, grille surrounds, window surrounds, and even fog light surrounds. The difference can be seen on the wheels, where the SXT offers 18” wheels and the SXT plus offers 20” wheels as standard.

The good part about the challenger is the number of options available. Their range of options comes from paint to wheels and everything in between. There are also graphics packs for you to add to the Challenger to make it look more sporty than it already is. If that is not enough, there is a whole set of packages from Mopar which can be equipped to your car for a small fee.

Competition

Dodge Challenger vs Ford Mustang

Both the Dodge Challenger and the Mustang are iconic cars and comes with a rich heritage associated with them. Out in the streets, the Mustang offers fewer customization options and is less practical than the Challenger. Performance-wise, the Mustang is evenly matched with the Challenger even though it comes with a smaller and more fuel-efficient turbocharged I-4 motor. On the inside, the Mustang feels more cramped with lesser legroom and headroom along with a smaller trunk as well. Clearly, the Mustang is meant for style and performance with a modern touch but the Challenger is for those who love to have a big and mean-looking muscle car on their driveway.

Dodge Challenger vs Chevrolet Camaro

The Chevrolet Camaro gives the Challenger a tough time when it comes to its intimidating appearance and immense street presence. But in its base form, the Camaro is a kind-of all-show and no-go car with its puny little 2.0-liter four-pot in front of the Challenger's V6. On the contrary, it offers more fuel economy although by a slight margin. The interiors are also not as spacious as the Challenger and it offers a significantly smaller trunk as well.

Final Verdict

In the segment and in front of its direct competitors, the Challenger holds up in an excellent manner with its brilliant performance, exterior design, and practicality factor as well. It also surprises with a comfortable ride quality, a rarity in the segment, along with a considerable huge trunk as compared to its rivals. On top, the coupe also offers a long list of trims and sub-trims to choose from with numerous customization options as well.
