Overall Rating
For 2016, Cadillac added the CTS-V model to go after the performance variants from its European rivals. In addition, the two base engines get start-stop technology, and the 3.6-liter V-6 is revised with more power and added cylinder deactivation.
Cadillac has made a huge comeback in the past decade, and for the most part, its sharply designed, luxuriously appointed, and well-engineered vehicles have been much more competitive in their respective segments. An excellent example is Cadillac's midsize luxury sport sedan, the CTS. Blessed with world-class handling, an available turbocharged V6, and a nicely appointed interior, the 2016 Cadillac CTS could very well have what it takes to win you over.
For 2016, the Cadillac CTS receives a new 3.6-liter V6 with cylinder deactivation and auto stop-start. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine also gets stop-start technology, and both engines are paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. With all the standard features that come with the base trim, the recommended would be the base model trim.

The CTS Performance comes with the Luxury's features and options plus 18-inch wheels (optional on Luxury), adaptive magnetic suspension dampers, a self-parking system (with both parallel and perpendicular capability), and — somewhat confusingly — a Luxury package consisting of illuminated door handles and sill plates, a head-up display, a 110-volt power outlet, tri-zone automatic climate control, heated rear seats, manual rear sunshades, and a power rear window sunshade. The CTS Premium starts with the Performance's features and options and adds different 18-inch wheels, extended leather upholstery, and an advanced theft-deterrent package. The CTS V-Sport comes only with the turbocharged V6 engine.
We Recommend
For 2016, the Cadillac CTS receives a new 3.6-liter V6 with cylinder deactivation and auto stop-start. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine also gets stop-start technology, and both engines are paired with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. With all the standard features that come with the base trim, the recommended would be the base model trim.
A 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder making 268 hp and 295 pound-feet of torque is the base engine for all but the V-Sport. Available with either rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD), the four-cylinder is hooked up to an eight-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel paddle shifters. An added feature for 2016 is a fuel-saving automatic engine stop-start system, which shuts the engine down at full stops and instantaneously restarts it when you lift off the brake or apply pressure to the accelerator pedal.
Optional on the Luxury, Performance, and Premium trims is a 3.6-liter V6 good for 335 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque. It gets the same stop-start technology and eight-speed automatic as the four-cylinder engine, again with a choice of RWD and AWD. The V-Sport Premium trim of the sedan comes with a 3.6-liter Twin Turbo V6 capable of churning out 420 hp.

The 2016 CTS isn't quite as athletic as the BMW 5 Series, but it's a better choice if you're looking for a daily driver. The 2016 Mercedes-Benz E-Class lacks the CTS' thrilling performance; the E-Class has a comfortable ride and plenty of power from all the engines in its lineup. In our comparison, the quickest is the BMW, followed by the Cadillac.
Cadillac made some changes for 2016 to improve the fuel economy of the two base engines. The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine and 3.6-liter V-6 add start-stop technology, and the 3.6 also gets cylinder deactivation so it can run on four cylinders in light load conditions. The 2.0 also swaps its 6-speed automatic for an 8-speed. The 2.0-liter is shared with Cadillac's ATS. With rear-wheel drive, it earns EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 30 highway, 25 combined. Adding optional all-wheel drive drops those numbers slightly to 21/29/24 mpg.

Active grille shutters are one of the many gas-saving technologies that have made their way into the CTS sedan, but there's no hybrid version in the works—though Cadillac has said it's mulling a diesel powertrain for some models it sells abroad. The most fuel-efficient among the compared sedan models here is the BMW 5 Series with an impressive 26 mpg combined.
The interior of the 2016 Cadillac CTS is sophisticated, luxurious, and rendered in rich materials, with a high level of craftsmanship and thorough technology integration. Front passengers in the 2016 CTS enjoy ample personal space, yet the enveloping dashboard and door panels make for an intimate cockpit that meshes nicely with the car's sporting mission. Rear passengers will be less pleased, however, as there's only modest space back there by midsize standards. The 2016 Cadillac CTS boasts a style-rich, feature-packed interior, with first-rate materials and assembly quality. The soft-touch padding and leather upholstery, leatherette in lower-end models, create an inviting ambiance.

Inside, the BMW is loaded with tech features, including an available 10.2-inch infotainment screen. The back seats are roomy enough for tall adults to get comfortable. The 5 Series offers only a bit more space than the CTS. And for the Mercedes-Benz, the cabin has tasteful styling and first-rate materials. Lots of features are available in the CTS, including a long list of advanced safety tech. With just the cargo space left to evaluate, the Cadillac lacks passenger room than its rivals, however, it has the largest trunk capacity. Major interior features include-
The Cadillac User Experience (CUE) infotainment system pairs a graphically rich 8-inch touchscreen with peripheral touch-panel inputs. Now outfitted with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, CUE is more capable than ever when it comes to smartphone integration. We've found the system to be frustrating in the past, especially when you need to execute a quick command while driving, but Cadillac has implemented a quicker processor and additional tweaks for 2016. That's something to keep in mind if you're comparing this year's model to those from 2015 and before. Few key infotainment features include-
This is a sharp-looking car, and we mean that literally. The creased fenders, rippled hood, and prominent grille on the 2016 CTS stand out even among its talented competitors in the luxury-sedan segment. Details range from the pragmatic – grille shutters that close to improve aerodynamics – to pretty, such as the seamless aluminum trim around the side windows. At the rear, all new CTS sedans feature dual exhaust outlets. Models with the "CTS4" markings designate all-wheel drive.

From the rear side view, the CTS has an uncanny resemblance to the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. It's all in the rear roofline, the way the pillar bends down toward the trunk lid, and the shapes of the side glass. Everywhere else, the CTS is pure Cadillac. The blunt edges of previous Art & Science designs have been smoothed down. Being the lightest in the class, the CTS has all the other specifications almost similar to its competition. Major exterior highlights of the sedan are-
All versions of the CTS have more than the usual number of airbags—10 are standard, including front knee airbags. Rear parking sensors and a rearview camera are also included, as is GM's OnStar telematics system with a free year of service and remote access via a smartphone app.On the options list, the CTS offers a parking assistant for parallel and perpendicular spaces, which uses its suite of sensors & cameras and the car's electric power steering to help guide it into parallel-park spaces without drama. There's also the now-common package of adaptive cruise control, cross-traffic alerts, forward-collision alerts, and lane-departure warnings—with a twist. The lane departure system vibrates the steering wheel in most other vehicles. Major safety features available with the sedan are-
The BMW 5 Series isn't the athlete that the CTS is (a strange-but-true turn of events), but it's got a superb range of engines, and its infotainment system is a more mature product than CUE. Much the same can be said of the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but the CTS easily holds its own in this group. Whether you're looking for performance, luxury, or both, Cadillac has a complete package in the 2016 CTS.
