About 2019 Chevrolet Camaro

4.0

Overall Rating

Every Camaro is bound to compete with a Challenger and a Mustang and the tradition continues to this day. Even the Germans are up for a challenger with the 2 series BMW. Buckle up because it's going to be a drag!

For the 2019 model year, the entry-level Camaro starts at $25,000 with two engine options, the less potent 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 engine and a 3.6L V6 engine, and 2 choices of transmission. A 6-speed stick shift and a low ratio 8-speed automatic. The standard powertrain can muster 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Away from the powertrain option, there is an army of interior and exterior add-ons but personalizing your ride will require a high budget far away from the car's original price tag.

If you are planning to buy a Camaro go for the V6 engine with the 1LE package, there is no arguing over that. Even if you are going for the smaller engine, the 1LE package is a must-have.

2019 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Pros

  • Powerful engine options
  • Improved Ride and Handling
  • Slick infotainment

Cons

  • Cheap cabin materials
  • Cramped rear seats

Every Camaro is bound to compete with a Challenger and a Mustang and the tradition continues to this day. Even the Germans are up for a challenger with the 2 series BMW. Buckle up because it's going to be a drag!

Overview

For the 2019 model year, the entry-level Camaro starts at $25,000 with two engine options, the less potent 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 engine and a 3.6L V6 engine, and 2 choices of transmission. A 6-speed stick shift and a low ratio 8-speed automatic. The standard powertrain can muster 275 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Away from the powertrain option, there is an army of interior and exterior add-ons but personalizing your ride will require a high budget far away from the car's original price tag.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2019 Chevrolet Camaro is offered in 4 trim levels, the entry-level 1LS, 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT. All feature a similar Turbocharged Inline-4 engine as standard through an option for 3.6 V6 is also available on some trims. The "1, 2, and 3" denotes the number of standard equipment devised by Chevy for each level of Camaro. The base 1LS has the standard powertrain while the 1LT and 2LT get the option for a V6 engine, while on the 3LT trim the V6is the only powertrain option. There is a 6-speed stick shift backing the engine with an 8-speed automatic being an option.

The 1LT and 2 LT are entitled to an upgrade for Technology Package while the 3LT gets its goodness pre-installed. The RS package is another option you can have for the 1LT, 2LT, and 3LT trim. A 1LE Track Package can be added to the same 3 trims to give it a more track car demeanor.

We Recommend

If you are planning to buy a Camaro go for the V6 engine with the 1LE package, there is no arguing over that. Even if you are going for the smaller engine, the 1LE package is a must-have.

Engine and Performance
9.0/10

Camaro is known for its raw muscle power and street racer demeanor. It got the attitude but missed out on power with the base trim, however, that's the maximum you get for a 25 grand car. GM's standard choice of the powertrain is a 2.0L Turbo Inline-4 engine mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission, which isn't that intriguing.

However, you have an option for a 3.6L V6 engine which pumps out a sufficient 335 horsepower and 284-pound-feet of torque and that's where your choice ends. However, if you are an adrenaline addict then power on the SS and ZL1 will seem more appealing.

The 6-speed manual is smooth and promotes short shifts an 8-speed automatic available on all four trim levels. The thundering engine noise is hard to miss, all the pops and crackles become more intense in the Sports mode. We would suggest keeping your Camaro in Touring mode while passing on an old couple in a pickup. The power delivery is linear and the V6 engine is more torquey.

Acceleration

Most muscle maniacs will go for the bigger engine, in that case, the V8 on the SS but frankly, the V6 should be taken seriously too. From a standstill, you get a tire-smoking 5.4-second acceleration. The clutch is well composed and quite maneuverable. Being a muscle it's bound to perform in drag. Hence, the Camaro took 14 seconds to hit the quarter-mile light. The initial surge of power is intriguing, you won't be pinned back to the seat on the base trim but the V6 delivers the same feeling.

Muscle car rivalry is not hollow words, both cars go neck to neck when it comes to acceleration. The Mustang is a split second early while the BMW gives it a tough competition. The challenger despite having more power is not the one to win this drag.

The flat-bottom steering feels weighted with a lot of road communication, the steering is not razor sharp but responsive on the road, you will enjoy a fair amount of predictability as well. On the highway, it's well-composed and doesn't wobble. The sport-tuned suspension is different from the Camaro's past stiff suspensions, though it still has some issues. There is no noticeable body roll.

The well communicative clutch and short ratio gearbox further enhance the magic of driving for sheer pleasure. We know its rebellious past hounds the Camaro, but Chevy has done a great job of making a laid back ride, the best of which is seen on the highway. However, the cabin is not immune to the small adversities of the road. Vibrations from the bumps are clearly sensed on the road, however, the longer wheelbase manages to tone down the vibrations.

You have 3 modes, Sport, and Touring which drastically shift the car's mind. So, no matter if you are speeding on the highway or countering the hurdles in the city, the Camaro is up for a challenge.

Braking

No matter how fast or reckless the Camaro gets, it still needs to stop at some point. Well, it's a good thing as braking dynamics are strong on the Camaro. Backed with a 1LE package and you have even more strong braking dynamics. The pedal feel is nice and composed and exudes confidence at every push. The brakes have a good bite to them and during the panic brake test, it does not wobble. The car took a total of 93 feet to halt from a speed of 60 mph.

The Camaro is the class leader when it comes to hard braking. Its 93 feet of panic brake test is the best performance by an American muscle in the segment. Though the Mustang and Challenger were close they both exceeded the 100 feet mark.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

Muscle cars have an appetite for fuel economy, you will be a constant at the gas station just to use them as a daily driver. However, the lesser tamed Inline-4 is the opposite of what muscle cars are known for. The 22 mpg city and 31 mpg highway are quite impressive for a pony car. As you aim for a higher engine you ought to expand the hole in your pocket to fuel up the car. Together the combined fuel economy is rated at 25 mpg.

It isn't the class leader but the Camaro has a fair economy. The 2 series is the most fuel-efficient car with its 28 mpg combined economy, while the Challenger is the least with a small margin.

Interior
6.5/10

Inside the retro shell sits a modernized interior, everything looks good but it doesn't feel that upscale. There are a lot of hard plastic areas but their built is rather strong. The features like AC vents and climate control are futurist and may impress even a German designer.

However, the placement is not the best one. The driving position is decent, you get a good look at the road but the gigantic gauge cluster and steering cannot go unnoticed, it impairs with healthy visibility. The cabin is not that spacious but doesn't feel packed to its adequate for a car built for 2 but marketing it for 4 is a comical statement.

The front cabin is roomy, the driver and the co-pilot seats have good lateral support. You can enjoy a laid back long ride without breaking a sweat. You have 38.5 inches of headroom and 43.9 inches of legroom, however, things don't play well for the back-seaters. There is no legroom space, it's clear the car was not intended to harbor 4 people full time. You get a lot of options to customize the Camaro, but you need to pay more.

Infotainment

Standard on the Camaro is Chevy's 3rd generation infotainment with Chevrolet MyLink infotainment with an 8-inch infotainment screen. Navigation is optional on the basic Camaro. The system receives some updates but the unusual placement is too obstructive to be user-friendly. The screen though is responsive and the navigation is easy to use. Smartphone integration like the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim level.

Cargo volume

Practicality is where Camaro hits a rock bottom. The 9 cubic feet of cargo volume is the worst in the class, even the fellow American muscle features a much bigger cargo. The subpar cabin utility limits you from carrying a lot of luggage. However, you can use unrealistic seats to do that job for you.

The bold lines running all over the fenders and beastly front grill are what makes the muscle an exclusive section. The design is true to its 60s American lineage with some tuning signifying Chevy modern styling.

Have a good look at the rear end you will find the thin 3D taillight giving it a daunting stance. The funky bumpers are a bit of a surprise but it contributes to the overall look. There is not much of a change on the metal sheet of the Camaro but little tweaks on the front and rear fascia, hood scoop, and a more aerodynamic body.

Dimensions and Weight

The Camaro looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger in his prime, it has a lot of lean muscle but lacks the size. It's actually 10 inches shorter than a full executive, but that's all a muscle needs. On paper, the Camaro is 188 inches long and 74.7 inches wide from ear to ear. It's 53 inches tall which is true to its muscle car mold. Compared to the boat like Challenger the 110-inch wheelbase is a rather middling characteristic.

Exterior Features

  • 18" Silver-painted aluminum wheels
  • 245/50R18, Blackwall, all-season tires
  • Outside power-adjustable mirrors, body-color
  • Front Wipers- Intermittent

Safety
8.6/10

The Camaro has not undergone any third-party crash testing. However, IIHS rewarded the 2018 Camaro with its highest Good rating for the driver and passenger side. Then you have the advanced safety features in the 3LT trim which adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and forward-collision warning.

Ford Mustang EcoBoost vs Chevrolet Camaro

Camaro's long term rival isn't planning on making things easy for the Camaro. Mustang is a well-rounded car that has got everything right starting from power to practicality. Away from the Challenger's secured retro look, the Mustang has aged quite well, it's one of the most handsome muscles dominating the market. Fuel economy is not something to debate over, both cars are evenly matched, but it's the seating that makes a lot of difference. The back seats on the Camaro are not habitable, while the Mustang can squeeze 2 people on the back.

Both cars deliver the same set of features, with one just a tad behind the other. Even the price doesn't impact your choice. Hence, your choice will largely depend upon the brand you prefer.

Dodge Challenger SXT vs Chevrolet Camaro

It's 2019 and the Challenger is still living in the '70s, Dodge has not made any concrete changes on the Challenger. However, from the inside, it is a completely different beast. Pitting it with the Camaro the Challenger is more powerful with its V6 might. However, the boat-like design limits its acceleration. Efficiency is better on the Camaro. As a family car, Challenger is more promising as a daily driver. Its long body delivers more cargo and extra legroom for tall people.

So, if your kids and responsibilities and still want to live your teenage dream Challenger might be your choice.

BMW 2 series vs Chevrolet Camaro

In the race of all American muscles, the BMW sneaks in with a wild-card. It's got lesser power than the Camaro but matches other parameters. You get a decent trunk and cramped rear seats but that's way better than the Camaro has to offer. In terms of driving dynamics, the German rival is more nimble and delivers more efficiency. However, people looking for a muscle are the least concerned about efficiency and practicality.

Any muscle manic would consider a Camaro over a Beemer and it's not because of its high power, badass looks, or low price.
