About 2020 Chevrolet Camaro

3.5

Overall Rating

behind the newly designed front bumper lies the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that has proven its worth time and time again. The turbo-four powertrain makes 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque, which is sent to the wheels at the back with the help of a six-speed manual transmission.

When you see a beast evolving from the heydays of classic American muscle cars, you bet some interesting legacy from it made way to the history books. Chevrolet has redesigned their Camaro for the year 2020 yet again. Only the upgrade has been kept limited to the front, and the overall retro muscle-car styling has been preserved. This Camaro has transformed into a sports car with premium architectural components, shared from Cadillac, that make this Chevy a force to be reckoned with.

The base trim of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, i.e. the 1LS, is the most logical of all variants of this Camaro. It offers a lot of features for a relatively affordable amount. Plus it looks just as good and makes as much power as any other variant. So getting the 2020 Camaro 1LS with the standard six-speed manual transmission will check all the right boxes.

2020 Chevrolet Camaro Review

Pros

  • Impressive handling
  • Reasonable pricing
  • Powerful engine options

Cons

  • Limited space in second row
  • Below average cargo capacity

behind the newly designed front bumper lies the same 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine that has proven its worth time and time again. The turbo-four powertrain makes 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque, which is sent to the wheels at the back with the help of a six-speed manual transmission.

Overview

When you see a beast evolving from the heydays of classic American muscle cars, you bet some interesting legacy from it made way to the history books. Chevrolet has redesigned their Camaro for the year 2020 yet again. Only the upgrade has been kept limited to the front, and the overall retro muscle-car styling has been preserved. This Camaro has transformed into a sports car with premium architectural components, shared from Cadillac, that make this Chevy a force to be reckoned with.

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The base 2020 Chevrolet Camaro is available in 4 different trims; 1LS, 1LT, 2LT and 3LT. All these variants are equally loaded with features and a lot of them are standard across the range. The several trim of the 2020 Camaro derive power from a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine married to a six-speed manual unit as standard.

There’s also an option of a more powerful 3.6-liter Naturally Aspirsted V6 besides an eight-speed automatic unit, but not on the base 1LS trim. Besides the mechanics, there’s hardly anything in particular that distinguishes the many trims from one another, except minor differences.

We recommend:

The top trim of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, i.e. the 3LT, is the most logical of all variants of this Camaro. It offers a lot of features for a relatively affordable amount. So getting the 2020 Camaro 3LT with the standard six-speed manual transmission and optional 3.6-liter V6 will check all the right boxes.

Engine and Performance
8.9/10

This 2020 Chevrolet Camaro line-up derives power from a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four engine. Even though this powertrain is not as powerful as the V6 and V8 engines in the more performance oriented Camaros, it still manages to excite as a family sedan.

The 2.0-liter turbo-four churns 275 hp and 295 lb.-ft. torque. The engine sends all that power to the rear two wheels of this Chevy with the help of six-speed manual transmission. There’s an optional 8-speed automatic unit on offer too, but the rear-wheel drive system has no substitute.

Even with the base 2.0-liter turbo-four, the Camaro is a pretty exciting car, and even though the numbers might suggest that it is the least powerful of the lot, but it’s actually a lot faster.

For more fun on the road or on the track, however, opting for the available 3.6-liter Naturally Aspirated V6 makes a lot more sense. That V6 puts out 335 hp and 284 lb.-ft. torque, making hooning around in this Camaro a lot more fun. The lack of turbo-lag further elevates overall experience.

How fast is the Chevrolet Camaro Coupe?

The Camaro’s engine sends all the power it makes to the rear wheels of this coupe. As a result, this Chevy even with its base 2.0-liter engine gets hurriedly off the mark. And even though it may not sound that sporty, this Camaro’s engine packs quite a punch.

The 6-speed manual transmission perfectly matches the engine’s potential too. Chevrolet claims that the 2020 Camaro will manage to accelerate to 60 miles per hour from a standstill in 5.4 seconds, which should be respectable in this lineup of family sedans.

What about the braking performance of the Chevrolet Camaro Coupe?

The base 2.0-liter Camaro may be a family sedan, but it is a Camaro after all. So not only does it accelerate quickly but also brakes just as well. However, not much is known about the brakes on the 2020 Camaro. Still, from what we know so far, the brakes on the Camaro are excellent to say the least.

They are progressive and the response from the pedal is also quite reassuring. The brakes should inspire enough confidence in the driver to be able to go hard on the pedal in situations that ask for it. Considering the fact that the Camaro does not get automatic emergency braking, it’s important that the brakes be strong.

What about its driving dynamics?

The best thing about the Camaro is the way it handles. The Camaro’s premium Alpha platform borrowed from the outgoing Cadillac ATS features advanced suspension geometry. At the front are double-pivot, control-arm and strut design suspensions that coordinate with the electrically assisted power steering.

At the back is a five-link suspension setup which keeps this Chevy planted while also making up for an adequately comfortable ride. The steering wheel on this Chevy is easily one of the best in the business. It is nicely weighted and the way the Camaro follows in the direction of the steering wheel is too satisfying.

Additionally, the Camaro can also be equipped with Magnetic Ride dampers. Doing so ables the Camaro to actively adjust the suspension from firm to relaxed depending on whether you’re cornering or cruising. But the available 20-inch wheels can cause a lot of pain over not so smooth pavements.

Fuel Economy
5.0/10

A car that is affordable and powerful at the same time is going to have to make some compromises somewhere. The Camaro’s MPG ratings are one of those compromises. This Chevrolet with a 2.0-liter engine is only average when it comes to being fuel efficient.

The 2020 Camaro with the turbo is most fuel economical when paired to the 8-speed automatic transmission. In this setup, the Camaro manages to return a combined fuel economy of 25 miles per gallon. Opting for the Camaro with the standard 6-speed manual is only going to bring that number down to 23 miles per gallon.

Interior
6.3/10

The 2020 Chevrolet Camaro’s average fuel economy isn’t its most noticeable compromise. It’s the lack of attention they paid to the second row. For a family sedan, that this Camaro aspires to be, it is more than just uncomfortable for the passengers.

The rear seats are actually only good for doubling up as extra storage space. The Camaro’s coupe design not only compromises the availability of headroom but also takes away a sufficient amount of legroom. As a result, putting people in the second row can be a punishment on the otherwise comfortable Camaro.

On the upside, the front row is accommodating. There's a decent amount of headroom. Thanks to the Camaro’s low seating position. The seats are covered in budget-grade upholstery which can be swapped for Recaro sport bucket seats. The sport seats can be heated as well as cooled, and also provide plenty of support.

The cabin is covered in price-appropriate material. There’s plenty of plastic on the dash, center console and even on door panels, but the fit and finish is good enough to be more than acceptable.

Does it come loaded with tech inside?

The not so expensive Camaros feature a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen with the following tech on board:

  • Bluetooth connection
  • WiFi hotspot
  • Chevrolet Connected Access

Creature comforts on offer in the Chevrolet Camaro Coupe

The several comfort features that make this Camaro a joy to ride are:

  • 6-speaker audio system
  • Power mirrors
  • A/C
  • Climate control
  • Cruise control
  • Keyless entry
  • Power adjustable driver/passenger seats
  • Remote trunk release
  • Keyless start
  • Telematics
  • Interior lighting
  • Manually tilting and telescoping steering column

What about utility?

The 2020 Camaro could care more about practicality because it just doesn’t seem to do so. Seems like the second row seats are only there to free up space on the inside for storing your luggage. At 9.1 cubic feet it’s boot is only slightly bigger than the Nissan 370Z which is a two-seater.

There’s no doubt that the Camaro is one heck of a good looking car. However, for the year 2020, the Camaro has received an emergency refresh still. It has the same retro styling with a high belt line and low-slung roof, but what has changed though is its front fascia.

After a styling revision last year, that proved rather controversial, Chevrolet has updated the design of the Camaro yet again. The new front fascia adds a body-color bar between the upper and lower grille. The large mesh from 2019 has been scrapped for good. Even the Chevy’s iconic bowtie badge has been moved to the upper grille.

The overall profile remains the same. The 2020 Camaro sits low and so does it roof. The beltline rises gradually as we move to the back. The traditional Coke-bottle shape has also been kept intact as the sides that taper inward merge with expanded rear. Overall, the 2020 Camaro looks more intimidating than pleasing.

What are those eye catching features?

The most noticeable exterior design elements of the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro are:

  • 18-inch 5-split-spoke wheels
  • Body-color power outside mirror
  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Low-slung profile
  • Coupe design

Safety
8.8/10

One of the several setbacks of the 2020 Camaro is also the fact that it does not come equipped with automatic emergency braking. But the several safety features that are standard on this 2020 Chevy include:

  • Back-up camera
  • ABS
  • Tyre pressure monitor
  • Brake assist
  • Stability control
  • Traction control

Competition
6.0/10

Chevrolet Camaro vs. Dodge Challenger

The Charger is a good $3,000 more expensive than the Camaro, but that’s about it. The Charger is a much better overall package than the Camaro. It’s more powerful, more practical and just as efficient as the Camaro. So the Charger justifies how much it costs, but the Camaro does not.

Chevrolet Camaro vs. Ford Mustang

The Camaro doesn’t quite fair well against the Mustang either. Sure it handles better than the Mustang and offers a slightly more comfortable ride. But the Mustang is not only more powerful than the Camaro, but it is also more fuel-efficient at the same time. Also, it is less damaging to the environment. Then there’s always the concern of usability, and with a 13.5 cubic inch trunk, the Mustang tops even that.

Final Verdict

If you want a car that looks cool, but can’t afford to spend a fortune on it, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro is definitely worth a lookout. It’s comfortable on the inside and aggressive on the outside. Plus even with base 2.0-liter turbo-four, the Camaro manages to let you feel like you are driving around in a big, powerful sports car. However, in all honesty, there are other sedans in this segment that do exactly what the Camaro does. Only, they do it in a much better way. The redesigned 2020 Camaro does feel retro still.
