2020 Ford Ranger Review

Ranger is one such vehicle that has an impressive fan following for its Off-road capabilities. The New 2020 Ford Ranger is equipped with new technology overall. The new 2020 packs a lot of new things inside apart from the exterior finishing.

The Ranger is Ford's entry-level pickup truck. What started as a trim level for Ford's popular models like the F-series pickup trucks and the Ford Bronco, the Ranger has a rich history associated with it. This lightweight utilitarian pickup might be the smallest in Ford's current lineup but its big on amenities and capabilities. The Ranger nameplate made its comeback in 2019, after a long wait of 8 years, and upped the sales charts for Ford with its arrival.

Ford is known for its Pickup trucks and the Ranger represents the entry-point of the vast lineup of such utilitarian and pure brute Ford offerings. Hence the American auto-marque has thrown the best of what they got into this truck to ensure that they have a winner at their hand. The 2020 Ford Ranger pulls off the utilitarian character very well when you need it to do certain towing or loading tasks for you, and can also bash some dunes when the aficionado within you knocks.

What do We Recommend?

We recommend you to go for the XLT trim as for a nominal hike in price over the base XL trim, you get several exterior tweaks along with interior upgrades which increase this Ranger's appeal and comfort factor. Apart from that, the XLT trim also gets features such as fog lamps, a productivity screen, and lane-keeping assist, which further enhance the utility factor this trim brings on the table. We also seriously recommend you to not upgrade to the optional 4WD drivetrain, until and unless you are into extreme off-roading. The Ranger, in its RWD drivetrain, offers better payload capacity, better mileage, and is obviously much more economical to procure.

Engine and Performance
8.0/10

The 2020 Ford Ranger comes with a single engine option, a 2.3-liter four-cylinder Ecoboost unit that's good for 270 horsepower. A four-banger might not sound adequate for a pick-up truck that weighs in at over 4400 lbs but the Ecoboost engine is no slouch thanks to a turbocharged setup that is capable of delivering a punchy mid-range. The 270 horses on tap though is not an overwhelming figure, but the 310 lb-ft of torque surely gets it moving and is especially useful for hauling goods or hitching up a trailer.

The Ecoboost engine is a workhorse but what makes the Ranger effortless to drive is the fabulous 10-speed transmission that seamlessly shifts cogs in the city and on open roads and at the same time it manages to hold gears on demand, which comes in handy in tricky off-road scenarios or while carrying heavy loads. The availability of a 10-speed transmission also translates to a higher fuel economy making this a perfect daily driver.

How fast can the Ford Raptor go from 0-60?

Acceleration is probably the last thing on the priority list of those in the lookout for a pickup truck. However, specs do matter and Ford has taken care of the grunt this powerhouse delivers. The Ranger, in its 4WD guise, can accelerate from 0-60 mph in a very respectable 6.1 seconds making it the fastest in its class which is an appreciable feat considering its near 4500lbs weight and the fact that it has the smallest engine in its class. This just goes to show that bigger isn't always better.

The Ford Ranger pulls its heft in a rather commendable way, clocking the quarter of a mile lap in a matter of 14.7 seconds and at a speed of 91.3 mph. The sprinting figures of the Ford Ranger feel quite impressive for a pickup truck of this class. The Ecoboost engine underneath the hood does a fine job of propelling this pickup. Though there is a presence of some turbo lag, yet the Ranger moves ahead with eagerness, and provide ample punch in the mid-range.

The Ford EcoBoost engine with its torquey mid-range combined with the seamless 10-speed transmission is a successful recipe and offers the perfect combination of power and efficiency. The Ford Ranger triumph over its rivals in terms of acceleration. The Chevrolet Colorado rakes in the second spot, finally followed by the Toyota Tacoma, which needs almost 7 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 mph.

How well does the Ford Ranger Rides and Handles?

The 2020 Ford Ranger is a capable machine in terms of handling be it on tarmac or on the rough stuff. For a vehicle that weighs in at over 2 ton, it is surely an adept handler in offroad situations. On initial takes of the vehicle, we learned that the vehicle learns new roads very well with an aspiringly powerful ride. However the old-school leaf-spring setup at the back might come in handy for handling heavy loads but it isn't the best for vehicle dynamics, and surely hampers the ride quality and handling especially at high speeds.

The 10-speed automatic transmission makes up for smooth and precise upshifts and downshifts, and garnishes the 2.3L Inline-4 engine's torquey performance with a flavor of smoothness. Apart from that, the Ford Ranger is also available with a Terrain Management System, which further enhances this pickup's performance. The Terrain Management system offers 4 modes, namely: Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and finally the Sand. These modes often come in handy when going the unpaved way, altering the engine performance, throttle response, and suspension settings accordingly.

The vehicle comes with driver-assist features such as blind-spot information, lane departure warning and assists for a safer driving experience in the low visibility situations. The high seating position of the driver seat often gets the body roll peaked to some extent on sharp corners but gets a safe landing, however.

How good is the Ford Ranger's braking setup?

Braking was never a tough job for a tough truck like the Ford Ranger. The 2020 Ford Ranger employes 12.2-inch rotors up front and 12.1-inch rotors at the back to ensure that it can stop all that mass in a safe distance. The Ford Ranger can decelerate from 60-0 mph in a distance of 127 feet, which seems a decent figure for a truck of such dimensions.

Though the braking seems fine and reliable in routine conditions. It, however, does not inspire confidence under panic braking situations. There is a considerable nosedive under panic braking conditions, and the Ranger also exhibits signs of swaying and stability when made to halt hard. Although, the braking in this big vehicle is supported by drive assistance features such as ABS and EBD and also has automated emergency braking which comes on top of all.

The Chevrolet Colorado gets the biggest brake rotors in the segment and the result of this feat is quite evident in the way it halts. The 2020 Chevrolet Colorado can decelerate from 60-0 mph in a distance of 124 feet, which happens to be the best in this segment. The Ford Ranger makes a close case, with a 60-0 distance of 124 feet, finally followed by the Toyota Tacoma, which tasks its nice sweet time to come to a standstill.

Towing Capacity

The new Ford Ranger is rated to safely tow 7500 lbs which is appropriate for this class and is one of the highest in the segment only second to the Chevrolet Colorado, which can tow up to 7700 lbs.

The 2020 ranger is also aided with towing features such as sway control, brake controller, and blind spot information which makes towing large trailers a breeze.

Payload Capacity

The 2020 Ford Ranger gets a pickup bed that can handle heavy cargo without any hassle. The Ford Ranger in its RWD configuration gets a maximum payload capacity of 2080 pounds which is also the class-leading figure here. However, the payload capacity of the Ranger's 4WD variant is restricted to 1860 pounds only, as the 4WD setup in itself is heavier than RWD, and thus impacts the bed's weight carrying capacity.

Fuel Economy
9.0/10

The 2020 Ranger's 2.3L Inline-4 engine proves out to be a rather sensible powertrain decision from Ford. While the Ecoboost technology of the engine makes sure that you are never short on grunt, this powertrain returns higher fuel efficiency than compared to the rivals which get a V6 under their hood.

The 2020 Ford Ranger, in its standard RWD drivetrain, can spin for 21 mils in the city or can expedite through 26 miles on the highway for every gallon of gasoline. Summing it up, we get a combined mpg figure of 23, which is rather good for the segment. Speaking of the 4WD configuration, well obviously the Ranger, when upgraded to 4WD, witnesses a slight dip in the mpg figures. 2020 Ford Ranger 4x4 returns a city mpg figure of 20 and a highway mpg figure of 24, summing it up, we get a combined mpg of 22.

The Ford Ranger is not just a heavy-duty load bearer but also the ideal long-distance cruiser. With its 18-gallon fuel tank, the Ranger can manage to cover over 400 miles on a single tank of fuel with ease. Though the Ford Raptor gets the smallest fuel tank capacity in this lot, yet it posts competitive range figures, owing to its greater fuel efficiency.

Interior
7.0/10

The Ranger's interior's ooze familiarity the moment you claim into its cabin as the cabin is unmistakably Ford and unmistakably utilitarian. If you have owned a Ford before you will take no time in getting to grips with the interior of the Ford Ranger as well. Let's be very clear on a couple of things, the first being that this is still a truck so the interiors are truck-like but the best part is that the Ranger does not try to be what it isn't and what it is, is a damn good truck and that pretty much shows in its cabin. Second is the fact that Ford has showered it with their latest feature list, as a result, everything from the Sync-3 to powered seats, mirrors are all there and they work just as you'd expect them to.

In-terms of space the 4-door crew-cab has plenty of it on offer and the wide doors combined with the running board make ingress into this rather tall pickup truck easy even for the rear passengers. The low window line is another welcome touch and helps to increase the sense of space inside the cabin. On the practicality side of things, Ford has incorporated plenty of bins and cubby holders in the Cabin which make storing knick-knacks an easy affair.

As far as comfort goes, the seats are supportive and well-bolstered and one can accommodate themselves pretty comfortably for extended traveling hours. Speaking of comfort, well the front-row seats are a pro at it and offer the occupants ample space in all directions. However, speaking of the second row, the legroom seems to be an issue here.

What does the Ford Ranger get for its infotainment duties?

The 2020 Ford Ranger gets the latest Sync-3 system to fulfill all its infotainment duties. This system beams up all the information on an 8-inch touchscreen panel, which further displays all the information in the form of crisp and intuitive graphics.

Some of the standard infotainment features on the 2020 Ford Ranger are;

  • AM/FM Stereo with seek/scan
  • Enhanced Voice Recognition Communications and Entertainment System
  • Apple Car Play/ Andriod Auto
  • 911 Call Assist
  • Applink
  • Single Smart Charging USB Port
  • FordPass Connect with 4G LTE Wi-Fi

What are the convenience features on offer in the Ford Ranger?

The Ford Ranger makes an attempt to compensate for the lack of space inside the cabin by getting a ton of convenience features aboard. Though the pickups are not really meant to exude comfort, and rather strive by their rough and robust personality, yet the Ford Ranger gets a wide array of convenience features. Some of the most prominent ones are:

  • Rear under-seat storage tray
  • Bin instrument-panel storage
  • Remote keyless entry
  • 1-touch down
  • Front and rear cupholders
  • Retained accessory power
  • Day-night rearview mirror
  • Tilt and telescopic steering wheel
  • Cruise control with steering wheel controls
  • Dual-zone automatic electronic temperature control

Exterior
8.0/10

Ford Ranger is a class apart because of its exterior design and build. The front facia of the Ranger is dominated by a massive grille that looks imposing and compliments the squared out profile of the truck. The headlights are sleek and house a pair of projectors that give it a sheik and contemporary look that gets the truck's old-school styling right up-to-date. The side-profile of the Ranger is characterized by a deeply cut and defined line at the bottom of the doors. This crease initiates from the front door and is carried all the way back till the trailer hitch.

On the rear-side, the name of the pickup is stamped in bold letters, which ensures that you do not mistake it for the elder F-150. Apart from that, the Ranger also gets exterior elements such as black wheel well moldings and a bash plate upfront which further enhances this pickup's suave appeal. The base trim of the Ranger rolls on 16-inch silver steel wheels, however, it also offers the option of 17-inch silver-painted aluminum wheels, which we seriously recommend as the basic steel wheels do not complement the Ranger's persona.

The 2020 Ford Ranger, when placed against the likes of the Chevrolet Colorado and the Toyota Tacoma comes out as the heaviest pickup. However, in this case, this heft does not translate to larger dimensions. The Ford Ranger is the shortest, and the narrowest pickup here. The Ford Ranger has the smallest wheelbase in the segment, which definitely plays a role in tightening up the cabin space inside.

What are those eye-catching features?

The Ford Raptor is a macho and robust looking pickup truck that definitely pulls off the suave and sexy character pretty well. Though the Ranger is referred to as the entry-level truck from Ford, yet it surely has that appeal factor on its side and looks every bit American. Some of the most notable exterior features of the 2020 Ford Raptor are:

  • Black door handles
  • Galvanized steel/aluminum body material
  • Black grille
  • Convex driver and passenger mirror
  • Black front bumper with black rub strip
  • Reverse opening rear passenger doors
  • Wheel well moldings

Safety
9.9/10

Safety ratings for the Ford Ranger have remained unchanged from the last update as the underpinning and safety features remain largely the same for the 2020 update. The Ranger has always been an important platform for Ford hence they put in a lot of emphasis on making their entry-level pick-up as safe as possible. The 2019 Vehicle got a good score in Safety tests. The Ford Ranger gets Ford's co-pilot360 technology as standard and all three trims offer features such as Pre-Collison and Blind-spot Assist. Though the safety features on offer in the Ford Ranger keep on increasing as you move up the trim ladder, yet the base trims are aptly stuffed with safety features as well. Some of the standard safety features of the Ford Ranger are:

  • Rear View Camera
  • AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control
  • Airbags - Front, Driver and Passenger
  • Airbags - Front, Driver and Passenger seat-mounted side
  • Airbags - Safety Canopy side curtains

Ford Ranger vs Chevrolet Colorado

Ford is a reputed name in the automobile market. It has delivered the best vehicles of this decade and caters to a wide range of passenger vehicles in the American market. From Hatchbacks to SUV and mid-size pickup Ford makes tough vehicles that are loved by all. Its most challenging competitor in the US, Chevrolet is one of the largest manufacturers of vehicles in the world. Both Brands have tough performers in the mid-size pickup segment. Some might find the Ford Ranger a better vehicle and some might be confused about which one of the brands to buy.

In our recommendation, one should consider these points of comparison before buying. Many drivers prefer fuel economy and high torque and diesel engines are the best in such tasks. Unfortunately, the Ford Ranger has only a turbo petrol engine. Colorado also comes with diesel engines that can run up to 30 mpg. In terms of power the Colorado losses in the fight with Ranger. Colorado, however, has a similar towing capacity and has a maximum towing capacity of 7,700. The Chevrolet Colorado has better options on offer, to fit into everyone’s need in the pickup segment. One can also choose between 5.2 ft and 6.2 ft bed for Colorado, while the Ranger comes fitted only with a 5 feet bed.

Ford Ranger vs Toyota Tacoma

Toyota, the Japanese carmaker might have some of the easiest to operate vehicles in its lineup. But Toyota Tacoma is an odd one out in the line. Some might agree with the statement that Toyota Tacoma is a pure offroad pickup one can buy in the US. A pure off-road pickup is hard to find and so people generally don't find it quite a practical vehicle for a day to day use. The aggressive looks surely interest one but the practical need and demand of this pickup are quite limited over the Ford Ranger. One who needs a Practical car on the road with a good towing capacity and off-road capabilities similar to an SUV Ford Ranger is the go-to option for them.

However, If it's still confusion on which pickup among these two. We have a better division of there pros and cons here. Toyota because of its off-road capabilities loves the dirtier way and thus has more plastic everywhere in its costume. In terms of looks also, the Toyota Tacoma seems like an immature pickup. The Ranger, on the other hand, gets class-leading power figures and has a sense of responsibility in its design which also comes out of its use. The Ranger feels more responsible on the road while the Tacoma is aggressive in its approach.

Final Verdict
8.8/10

Ford has a vast lineup of pickups, with popular names such as the F-150 and Super Duty in its portfolio. The Ranger signifies the entry-point of this ecosystem and is thus one of the most significant offerings for Ford. Ford has taken special care of loading the Ranger with stuff that sets it apart from other rivals of the segment. With class-leading power figures, intrusive performance, high fuel-efficiency, and a truly robust exterior shell, the Ranger ticks all the right boxes for what an ideal mid-size pickup should be.
