The 2021 Tahoe has a starting price of $50,295 (including a $1,295 destination charge) for the base LS and goes up to $70,895 for the top-of-the-line High Country. The 5.7-liter V8 engine is standard across the LS, LT, RST, Z71, and Premier while the top-range High-Country gets a bigger 6.2-liter gasoline V8. All Tahoe's trims except Z71 come in standard two-wheel-drive configuration. You will have to shell $3000 more for the 4WD drivetrain. Among the rivals, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe is one of the most affordable large SUVs in the class.

You can get the new turbodiesel engine in the LS, LT, RST, and Premier trim levels of the 2021 Tahoe, costing just $995 more than the standard 5.3-liter V8. The trend reverses in the case of the Tahoe High Country, as the diesel saves $1,500 compared to the standard 6.2-liter gasoline V8. The LT trim costs $55,095, while the mid-level RST starts from $57,100 and offers a high-styling quotient. Starting from $59,200, the off-road-oriented Z71 has most of the same equipment as the LT trim, but it adds a few performance and mechanical upgrades. The Tahoe Z71 gets a four-wheel drive, a front skid plate, a two-speed transfer case, a heavy-duty air filter, an upgraded suspension, and hill descent control.

The Premier and High-country trims are the most equipped and luxurious trims of the Tahoe. Both these trims have a standard Driver Alert Package, otherwise a $790 cost option. How's the Chevy Tahoe's Engine, Transmission, and Performance?

Chevy has expanded the 2021 Tahoe's engine options -  a new diesel 3.0-liter inline-six cylinder joins the two gasoline-powered V-8s. The standard 355 horsepower 5.3-liter is powerful but the available 6.2-liter V8 cranks out impressive 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of peak torque. The Chevy Tahoe's diesel has the least horsepower but offers a whopping 460 lb-ft of torque. All the 2021 Tahoe trims are available with a 10-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel or four-wheel drive.

The third diesel engine is available on all variants except the Z71. The off-road-oriented Z71 benefits from 20-inch wheels wrapped with all-terrain tires, underbody protection, and a two-speed transfer case that provides the conventional four-wheel drive. For its large size, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe's 6.0 seconds 0-60 mph acceleration time is adequate.

Even at highway speed, Tahoe's cabin remains quiet with no noise, vibration, and harshness penetrating inside. When it comes to braking the 2021 Tahoe offers reliable feedback and firm pedal response. The Nissan Armada with its 5.6L V8 engine leads the pack in terms of horsepower while Toyota Sequoia's base engine offers the maximum 401 lb-ft of torque.

The 2021 Tahoe's 5.3-liter V8 has a maximum towing capacity of 7900 lbs while the more powerful 6.2L block increases the tow rating to 8500 lbs. The SUV can haul 1834 pounds of payload. Rated at 9300 pounds, the Expedition's tow ratings are the best among the rivals. Along with the massive improvement in tow ratings, Chevy also offers a Max Trailering package with the 2021 Tahoe. The package offers a high-capacity radiator and cooling fan, integrated trailer brake controller, Hitch Guidance with Hitch View, and the Chevrolet trailering app.

How is the 2021 Chevy Tahoe's Suspension and Handling?

With the standard 5.3-liter V8, the 2021 Tahoe returns EPA estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg in the city, 20 mpg on the highway, and 18 mpg combined, regardless of the RWD or AWD drivetrain. If you choose the bigger V-8 block, the gas mileage drops to 15/20/17 MPG (city/highway/combined) with RWD and 14/19/16 MPG with 4WD. Compared to the outgoing model, the 2021 Chevy Tahoe has better MPG ratings because of the new stop/start and cylinder deactivation technology.

The 2021 Tahoe diesel is the most fuel-efficient choice. However, with a 24-gallon fuel tank, the gasoline-powered Chevy can deliver a range of about 500 miles. Also, Chevy Tahoe's MPG ratings are better than the Toyota Sequoia and Nissan Armada. Only the 2021 Expedition returns a better 17/23/19 mpg in its most efficient configuration i.e. with RWD and short-wheelbase.

Among the competitors, the Ford Expedition justifies its higher price tag yet again with the best MPG figures across the board. The Chevrolet Tahoe follows in at a close second while the Nissan Armada is out in third owing to the biggest fuel tank capacity in the lot. How are Chevy Tahoe's interior design, seating, and cargo room?

The redesigned 2021Tahoe has the biggest interior dimensions until now. All three rows offer more space than the outgoing model, with the third row getting an additional 10 inches of legroom. The base LS trim can seat nine occupants, and it comes standard with cloth upholstery and an eight-way power-adjustable front passenger seat. To improve the interior quality, leather seats with heating and 10-way power adjustments up front are available, as are perforated leather upholstery.

Other features include 12-way power-adjustable front seats, ventilated front seats, heated second-row outboard seats, power-folding second and third rows, and a heated and power-adjustable steering wheel. The $58,395 RST gets a cabin that is more focused on utility, while the $59,200 Z71 package adds more sports-oriented cues including all-black interiors and contrast stitching on the dash as well as on the seats. The entry-level Tahoe's dashboard design is modern and far more premium - the column shifter has now been replaced by a push-button shifter.

Chevy claims 66 percent more cargo room behind the third row than before. There is 25.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. The flexible second-row seats expand the cargo to 72.6 cubic feet while with both the third and second rows seats folded, volume increases to a massive 123 cubic feet. The Nissan Armada offers the smallest cabin and the smallest cargo bay as well. The Ford Expedition offers the most consistently spaced cabin while the Toyota Sequoia offers the best space in the third row.

Tahoe's new architecture and the independent suspension offer a flat load floor for better cargo management. The third row can fold flat with the push of a button, which eases the cargo loading activity. The cabin is full of small storage options, such as layered compartments and a power-sliding center console.

How are Chevy Tahoe's new Infotainment and Technology Features?

The new Tahoe boasts a 10” inch touchscreen infotainment system with HD Radio with the base LS trim. This touchscreen is compatible with Apple Car Play, Android Auto, and 9 speakers bose audio system. It's a different story altogether with the top two trims viz Premier and the High Country. Chevy offers a bigger touchscreen display with a 10 speaker Bose sound system with an 8” MID in the instrument cluster for the driver. 

That's not all, the 2021 Tahoe is available with a rear-seat entertainment package, which adds two 12.6”- touch screen panels to the second row of seats to keep the passengers entertained. Some of the most prominent infotainment features in the SUV are:

2021 Chevrolet Tahoe vs. 2021 Ford Expedition

Compared to Chevrolet, Ford's large SUV has better cabin quality, and higher tow ratings (9,300 pounds). The 2021 Expedition even has a better MPG rating than the Tahoe, but that's because of its twin-turbo V6 under the hood. On the other hand, the Chevy comes with a V8. The new Tahoe takes the lead with the better infotainment system and a larger 10-inch touchscreen.  

In most other categories of this review, the Tahoe and Expedition are fairly comparable - Expedition max has similar passenger space as the new 2021 Tahoe. Coming at a starting price of $54,205, the Expedition is slightly more expensive than the 2021 Tahoe, which starts at $50,295. Choosing between these full-size SUVs is a matter of personal preference.

Toyota's Sequoia is aging and needs a significant update. Rated at 7,300 lbs, the Toyota has less towing capacity than the Chevy. Though the 2021 Sequoia has higher reliability ratings and resale value, both SUVs have comparable pricing. Starting at $51,000, the 2021 Sequoia remains a secondary choice in comparison to the new 2021 Chevy Tahoe.
