The prices begin from $26,795 for the Base trim, and go up to $39,945 for the Touring XT trim. The trims from Base to Touring get a 182 hp 2.5L naturally aspirated boxer-4 engine. However, with the XT trims that arrived last year, things start to get interesting both under the hood and features wise.
From the Onyx Edition XT to Touring XT, a 2.4L turbocharged boxer-4 engine comes into play. This engine is good for producing 260 hp which propels it right up the performance ladder in the segment. Each trim builds upon the premise of its preceding one but amps up the luxury and technology factor of the interior. The safety features also get amped up from the Touring trim onwards with Blind Spot Assist being added as standard for $37,495.

After the generational change in 2020, the Subaru Outback introduced two powertrain options depending on the trim levels. The standard non XT trims get a 2.5L naturally aspirated boxer-4 engine that produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque. And starting at $35,145, all the XT trims get a more powerful 2.4L turbocharged boxer-4 engine. This powertrain belts out a very respectable 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The transmission with both powertrains is a CVT gearbox.
However, this CVT manages to mimic an 8-speed automatic so you are basically covered with the "feel" part of the drive. Being a Subaru, the 2021 Outback also comes with the symmetrical AWD as standard. That being said, the Outback is actually not bad in sprinting to 0-60 mph. With the naturally aspirated unit, the 2021 Outback will complete the 0-60 mph sprint in 8.5 seconds. The quarter-mile takes almost double that time at 16.7 seconds. Thankfully this improves when you throw money and get the XT trims.
After splurging north of 35 grand and upgrading to the XT trim, you get the performer engine under the hood. With the turbocharged boxer-4, the 2021 Subaru Outback takes 6.3 seconds in the 0-60 mph and 14.8 seconds in the quarter-mile. Despite the engine upgrade, the overall driving character remains similar. Most of the time, you might find it itching to tread off-roads. This is one of the places where the 2,700 lbs of towing capacity come in handy. The payload capacity is pegged at 1,701 lbs across the trim range.

Subarus have always been known to be powerful, and even the naturally aspirated Outback makes good on that ideology. It is only marginally behind the Hyundai Santa Fe with the power figures. However, it is marginally ahead of the Kia Sportage as well. The Nissan Rogue is the least powerful on paper but is the fastest in the 0-60 mph run. The other three remain pretty much head to head in the 0-60 mph run but the Nissan Rogue loses it in the quarter-mile. This is where the Hyundai and Kia pick up the pace and take the top spot.
Without any hybrid or electrified options, the Subaru Outback still scores swell EPA ratings.- The Car Connection
The 2021 Subaru Outback carries the same powertrain as last year. This is why the MPG figures also remain the exact same as the 2020 Outback. With the naturally aspirated unit, the ride offers 26 MPG in the city, 33 MPG on the highway, and 29 MPG combined. Thanks to the CVT unit that only mimics and automatic, the fuel efficiency is maximized without dulling down driver experience.
When you upgrade to the XT trims with the turbocharged engine, the MPG figures drop. With this powertrain, you get 23 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. In all the trim levels, the 18.5-gallon fuel tank capacity remains constant. This allows you to get an overall range of 536.5 miles with the 2.5L unit and 481 miles with the 2.4L unit.

All the competitors here are in close proximity to each other when it comes to fuel-efficiency. The Outback, along with the Nissan Rogue churn out the best in class mpg figures. The Kia Sportage ranks third with a combined mpg of 26. The Santa Fe’s mpg figures earn it the last spot. Hyundai takes advantage of its larger footprint to install the largest fuel tank of the bunch.
Inside, you'll find a nicely appointed interior regardless of trim.- Motor Trend
The interior of the 2021 Outback is one of the best on a Subaru, and quite a spectacular place to be in. Though there is a lot of hard plastic, most of it is soft touch, and there are other upscale materials used as well to elevate the vibe the cabin exudes. Since the 2020 Outback was the generational change, the interior got an overhaul last year. Most of these changes were concentrated on making the crossover’s interior a bit more "updated". New features for this year are the rear seat reminder and passenger seatbelt warning light.
The ride offers a total seating capacity of 5 people. Depending on the trim, the upholstery on the seats, dashboard, and door panels changes between cloth and leather. The seats are comfortable in both rows and offer ample space for even the tall folks. You get the quintessential multifunction steering wheel, a center console with lots of cubby space, and an analog-digital driver display. The dashboard feels a lot more upscale and houses the 11.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system in the center.

In this lineup, the Hyundai Santa Fe and the Subaru Outback offer the most space in the interior. The Subaru Outback also keeps in mind in-vehicular entertainment for the passengers. This is why it comes with an 11.6-inch infotainment system from the Premium trim onwards. The Base trim comes with a barebones 7-inch infotainment system with mostly limited capabilities. The sound system varies between a 4 and 6 speaker in the inital trim and gets upgraded to a 12-speaker Harman Kardon Premium Sound System in the upper trims.
The infotainment system has a user-friendly UI that is crisp and intuitive and does not need much getting used to. It also comes with all the connectivity options of the modern-day like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and WiFi. The following are the interior and infotainment features of the 2021 Subaru Outback:
Subaru didn’t change much when it restyled the Outback’s rugged body for the 2020 model year, and hasn’t changed it at all this year.- The Car Connection
The designers at Subaru must have canceled all their vacations in order to revamp the 2020 Subaru Outback on the exterior part. When the Subaru Outback stepped into its sixth-gen in 2020, it got a number of visual updates too. The underpinnings are the same, but Subaru had revamped its exterior cues to stay afloat in this age of intense competition.
The changes were an updated grille, a restyled lower body cladding, a new front bumper, revised taillights, and rear bumper. With these updates still fresh and popular, Subaru has carried over them for the 2021 model year as well. It impresses us with impressive practicality, all the while, being a much better eye-candy than its counterparts.

The sixth-gen Subaru Outback’s dimensions have grown in terms of length and width. Moreover, the Outback gets the best in class ground-clearance, which lends this crossover some serious mild off-roading capabilities. Though the Outback cannot be taken to extreme terrains, yet it still is the most capable off-roader in its segment at least. Notable exterior features of the 2021 Subaru Outback are:
High safety scores are a plus, but its tech need work.- MotorTrend
Despite not looking like it, the 2021 Subaru Outback is actually one of the safest rides in the segment. The 2021 Subaru Outback carries a perfect 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA. The IIHS has granted it an overall "Good" rating which is the best they offer. Furthermore, the 2020 Outback was among IIHS's Top Safety Pick+ in its segment. Since the 2021 model is a carryover, the same spectacular build quality is carried over as well.
Since there are no changes taking place in the 2021 model, the crossover will offer the same list of standard safety features as the 2020 Subaru Outback. In terms of changes for this year, seatbelt reminders for the front passenger, and rear-seat reminders are now offered as standard features in the safety suite. Some of the most prominent highlights of the 2021 Subaru Outback's safety suite are:
The 2021 Hyundai Santa Fe is the most powerful SUV of the lot. However, that also makes it suffer in terms of fuel efficiency. Then again, the interior of Santa Fe is the most spacious too but outward visibility is hampered by the thick pillars ahead. The latest generation upgrade slated for 2021 has given it much-needed design attention and will help it get back in the game. Subaru Outback, on the other hand, comes up as a better all-round package. It is powerful, fuel-efficient, adequately spacious, and its standard AWD setup is just the cherry on the cake at the 26 grand you pay for it. Also, function has always been given more importance for Subaru and that still remains.
The 2021 Nissan Rogue is another strong contender in this class. It the least powerful of its class which is rather contradicting its sharp design language. However, this helps its fuel economy to remain decent. This time, the Nissan lags behind when it comes to passenger comfort. It is not the roomiest SUV out there and thus practicality takes a hit. Nissan Rogue's key aspect of not being spacious in terms of occupant comfort helps the Subaru Outback come out on top as a more pragmatic and practical option for the price it demands.
The 2021 Kia Sportage makes a decent case for itself with its excellent handling, comfortable and spacious interiors, and a very immersive dashboard layout. But then again, it suffers when it comes to being a complete package as it is not very fuel-efficient and has a cramped second row. When you take into consideration the bigger picture, the Subaru Outback is definitely a better SUV. Aside from having a very ergonomic and spacious cabin layout, it has an impressive edge in terms of driving dynamics and off-roading traits, which is hard to come by in the Kia Sportage.
The Subaru Outback is one of the most capable crossovers you can get in today’s time. Since the crossover stepped into its sixth generation very recently, and that it still is brimming with all the changes that were introduced to it in 2020, Subaru has us all interesting in the Outback. It still remains the only contender of its segment that can do as it brags in terms of off-road performance and cabin comfort for occupants. Pricing has also been well thought for and Subaru has taken the aggressive stand for 2021 as well.
The marginal price bump also helps the 2020 Outback stay at ease and the updates that have come in for the 2021 model year can also be retro-fitted to last year's model as well. So, even going for a used Subaru Outback will hurt less, preferably the 2020 model year though. Its competition is well-versed for sure, but none of them can handle terrains as the Outback and at the same time provide for a cozy and involving driving experience. On the roads, things can be debated but off-roads, the Outback prevails triumphantly.
