Overall Rating
The current-gen Charger isn’t a sleek-looking coupe anymore, it’s a purposeful sedan with the heart of true American muscle.
The Dodge Charger has been around for a long time now and has evolved tastefully. The brand has been careful to retain the car's rich heritage by offering it in multiple configurations to cater to almost every buyer in the segment. The most head-turner and customizable variants of the Charger are the R/T and the SRT 8 models which come with some serious performance in their stock form.
The 2016 Dodge Charger more of a family sedan powered by a V6 motor. The car’s attractive lines with curves are inspired by its glorified yesteryears. The SXT Challenger is a bit normalized, although it still has a great throttle response. On higher variants, the Dodge Charger truly gets going with the big and bad V-8 engines and some beefy horsepower under the hood.

The Dodge Charger starts at the lowest price tag amongst the competitors. Since the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Charger are powered by the same motor, their performance is nearly the same. The Dodge however moves up to high-powered engines, while the Chrysler is more tuned towards riding quality and an executive feel. The Toyota Avalon has the lowest gearbox speeds and is the only car with an FWD drivetrain.

The Dodge Charger offers a wide range of engine options and performance. The V-6 engine is comparably much more frugal than the V-8 motors. The 3.6L V-6 engine has 19 mpg in cities, 31 on highways, and 23 combined with the rear-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive turns these figures to 18/27/21 for city/highway/combined respectively. The HEMI V-8 on the R/T models comes with cylinder deactivation but still returns mediocre figures of 16/25/18 mpg. The 707 horsepower SRT Hellcat has figures to the tune of 13/22/16 mpg.

The large fuel tank on the Dodge Charger gives it a range of 425 miles combined. The Chrysler 300 seems to be the most well outfitted in terms of range owing to its 19.1-gallon fuel tank. The Toyota Avalon has the least range in the competition, though the Toyota 3.5L V-6 is the most fuel-efficient.
The 2016 Dodge Charger interior clearly tells a story about how the classic muscle car has evolved into a modern sedan. The cabin materials are of high quality with plenty of soft-touch surfaces all over the cabin. The cabin has great insulation and is perfectly quiet, with only the odd gurgle of the engine coming through.
The Charger has well placed and comfortable seats with plenty of space owing to its large size. There is plenty of legroom and headroom for all passengers, even 6-footers. Finally, the trunk is 16.1 cubic feet bit which is just average for the class.

All cars in the lineup have great space in the rear row. Owing to the shorter headroom in the Dodge charger, the seats are positioned lower which eats into the legroom, particularly for large passengers. The Chrysler 300 has the best headroom in the competition. Some standout interior features are:
The 8.4-inch touchscreen infotainment has large and easy to use buttons. The layout is easy to use and quite intuitive. Even the smaller 5.0-inch screen on the SE trims looks great and works seamlessly.
The infotainment has features like HD Radio, Navigation, Bluetooth compatibility, and Satellite Radio. Some standout infotainment features are:
The 2016 Dodge Charger combines old-muscle car looks with modern styling. The car has short front and rear overhangs and large wheels to modernize its appearance. The grille follows the recent design trends from the Dodge lineup. The 2015 redesign revamped the design with a new modern profile, particularly from the sides.
The overall shape is more curvaceous and less angular. The Dodge crosshair in the front is bracketed by projector headlights outlined with distinct c-shaped LED DRLs. The LED “racetrack” rear lamps are a signature of the Dodge Charger. The rear bumper has a smooth design and the exhaust has been integrated into the rear bumper.

The new Dodge Charger is a perfectly well-designed and safe car for families. The NHTSA has awarded the Dodge Charger a 5-star overall rating. Dodge Charger vs Chrysler 300
The Chrysler 300 sedan is another iconic car from the Stellantis group and it is mechanically a twin of the Dodge Charger. The sedan offers that chunky and big American styling along with a stellar performance. On the inside too, the sedan has a lot in common with the Charger and even has similar fuel economy ratings to the Charger as well. It is quite tough to choose in between the two but the Charger appeals more owing to its easily customizable build.
Dodge Charger vs Toyota Avalon
The Toyota Avalon is an almost-perfect family sedan in the segment with its adequate performance and a well-built cabin. As will every Toyota vehicle, the Avalon also offers excellent reliability and safety. Design-wise, it appeals to an entirely different set of buyers with its modern and sleek styling. The comfort levels within the cabin are also better than the Dodge Charger too.
The Dodge Charger is one of the most affordable sedans on the market to have a V-6 engine right from its base trim. The car also offers a variety of V-8 motors in case you need better performance. The interiors are well designed and have great space. While the car itself is a pleasure to drive. Overall the 2016 Dodge Charger is a well-executed sedan and worth buying.
