Overall Rating
In the age of standardization, plenty of available body stripes and color lend it a pleasant old-school charm. With standard V6, it’s a smooth intercity express. With HEMI V8s, it becomes a howling, tire-smoking muscle car. The Charger Daytona draws inspiration from its legendary predecessor - 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona. Oh! We forgot the 707 hp hellcat – fastest production sedan in the world.
The Dodge Charger has been one of the most raved nameplates in the whole of American muscle car history. With the arrival of the updated Dodge Charger in 2015, the moniker was able to iron out most of the gremlins that the previous generation was plagued with. Amidst the rising competition in the mid-size sedan segment from the likes of Chrysler 300, Toyota Avalon, and Kia Stinger, the Charger is back in the 2018 avatar to redeem itself. With the 2018 model year, it now offers new GT trim in its lineup with SE trim exiting the line-up and a lot of new standard features.
Along with some new stuff the 2018 Dodge Charger continues to offer good old stuff like enjoyable handling, a spacious cabin, and a user-friendly infotainment system. However, low predicted reliability rating and boring interiors are still the sore points in the package. Still, the Charger is the most compelling offer in the segment that showcases top-notch performance without compromising on the comfort and features.

In total, there are 11 trims and three engines on offer that you get with the 2018 Dodge Charger. The two GT trims get AWD as well. While base Charger SXT with V6 starts at $28,495, the V8 makes an entry from R/T onwards ($34,995). There are two Charger SRTs – the 392 HEMI equipped SRT 392 ($51,145) and the supercar rivaling 707 hp SRT Hellcat ($67,995).

We recommend
Although the V6 engine accelerates this full-size car with gusto, the HEMI V8s give this car a proper muscle car character. The HEMI V8 equipped R/T comes with plenty of basic convenience features as well. Our ideal R/T will also be equipped with the Super Track Pack ($1,205) for those massive hood scoops.
The 2018 Dodge Charger hasn’t received any updates from the outgoing 2017 model in terms of performance. The car still comes with the smooth and torquey 3.6L V6 VVT motor with the lower trims, punching out a decent 292 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. This engine is also mated to a standard 8-speed automatic transmission, which is decently quick to react as well as offers smooth shifts too. However, Dodge equipped the Charger with a V8 which is in a league of its own in terms of performance, with unmatched acceleration and grunt throughout the rev band. It sounds phenomenal too.
Overall we found that the car offered decent response with the base V6 motor, equating to a great low-end and mid-range performance aiding to impressive city drivability. Even in the freeways, we found the Charger to be a great cruiser, with power always on offer due to the wide powerband. However, the top-end performance is quite dull. The gearbox is decently quick in operation too. However, we wish the standard Dodge Charger sounded more fruity similar to the V8 models.

The V6 motor-equipped 2018 Dodge Charger gave out one of the best performance numbers for the segment, similar to that of the Chrysler 300, which gets the same V6 motor as the Charger. Both the Toyota Avalon and Kia Stinger gave out a slightly lower 286 hp and 255 hp, in comparison to the Charger. The Toyota Avalon is the only one with a comparatively lower torque output of 248 lb-ft when compared to the rest of the competitors.
As we said, the V6 is pretty quick – it can do 0-60 in 6.4 seconds. It is not the fastest in the comparison and but has decent acceleration. It has a decent quarter-mile acceleration as well of 14.8 seconds. Along with that, it has a decent top speed of 130 mph which is not the best among its competition.

The Toyota Avalon is the quickest in this acceleration with 0-60 mph in 6.0-seconds, while the Kia stinger is the slowest with 6.6 seconds. The Chrysler is decent in acceleration as well with 0-60 mph in 6.2 seconds but is slowest in the quarter-mile acceleration of 15.7 seconds. The Kia Stinger has the highest top speed of 167 mph, while the Chrysler 300 tops out at 125 mph.
The Charger handles with composure through corners and its high-speed stability is similar to some German luxury saloons. The performance-focused Daytonas and SRT can actually entertain you on a racetrack despite their porky weight. The exhaust note is a melody to the ears and adds to the overall driving experience. The steering is quick to respond and provides enough feedback from the road.
The Charger gets 12.6 brake rotors on all four wheels. With this, the charger can stop from 60 in 110 feet – impressive considering its heft. Along with that it gets antilock disc brakes that improve the safety factor of the vehicle.

The Chrysler has the biggest brakes in the comparison and has a cent stopping distance of 109 ft. The Kia Stinger has similar brake dimensions as the Charger, while the Toyota Avalon gets the smallest brakes of 11.7 in. and11.1 in. at the front and rear respectively.
Even with the inclusion of the most powerful motor for the segment, the 2018 Dodge Charger gave out decent gas mileage too. This naturally aspirated motor equipped mid-size sedan presented 19 MPG in the city and 30 MPG on the highway, with a combined rating of 23 MPG. With a high fuel tank capacity of 18.5-gallons, the Charger could cover 425 miles of combined driving in a tank full, which is much superior to the competitors from Asia

In comparison, the Chrysler 300 also returned a similar gas mileage of 23 MPG with a combined range of 425 miles. However, both the Toyota Avalon and Kia Stinger returned a slightly higher combined fuel efficiency of 24 MPG and 25 MPG, due to lower curb weight and lower performance offered by their motors. Even then, the combined tank range was much lower than the American siblings due to a poorer tank capacity.
The new Dodge Charger has never been quite synonymous with its luxurious interior, and the same tradition continues with the 2018 version as well. The interior of the 2018 Charger follows substance over style. The interior is mainly constructed in plastics, which are adequately soft for the most part. There are also subtle leather and metal inserts to make the interior more appealing to the masses. We also loved the silver accents in the center console along with contrastive stitching, making it look more opulent than what it is. However, the higher trims do offer more leather and Alcantara trim pieces, which should have been included even in the base trims also. Nevertheless, we do feel that the design of the interior of the Charger has started to age.
In the mid-size sedan segment, we feel that the Charger offers the most comfortable seats. They are well-bolstered on the sides, offering a snug fit even when cornering hard. The cushioning is spot on too. Along with that, the under-thigh support and lower back support provided by the standard seats on both the lower and higher trims of the Charger are superior to all of the competitors barring the Chrysler 300. The seats are also electronically adjustable and get heated functionality as well in the higher trims. They also come covered in leather.

The space on offer for both the front and rear-seat passengers in the 2018 Dodge Charger is quite similar to the competition. The Charger offers the best headroom and shoulder room for the front passengers but loses to Toyota Avalon and Kia Stinger in the front seat legroom. When it comes to the rear seats, the 300 and Charger offered decent shoulder room and legroom. Though, the headroom on offer from the Charger was slightly poorer in comparison. Some of the additional interiors feature the comes with the 2018 Dodge Charger to further improve the traveling comfort are mentioned below:
The 2018 Dodge Charger comes with two different infotainment systems - a 7-inch touch screen UConnect4 System and an 8.4-inch touch screen UConnect4C system. The former unit is available with the lower trim levels and the larger 8.4-inch system is available with the higher trims like Daytona, GT, and Scat Pack. Both the system is quite easily the best infotainment units currently on offer in a mid-size sedan and is much superior to the archaic units present in some of the competitors. They also come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, along with a host of many other features.
The touch sensitivity and display quality are impressive too, all of which makes it quite intuitive to use. The audio is handled by a six-speaker audio system for the base trims and superb Boston Acoustics performance speakers in the higher trim levels. Some of the other infotainment and audio system features that come with the 2018 Dodge Charger are mentioned below:
The Charger has a cavernous 16.1 cubic feet of trunk capacity. The folding rear seats also ensure that you can carry longer items too. The Kia Stinger has the highest cargo volume of 23.3 cu.ft which iss the best-in-class. The Toyota Avalon and the Chrysler 300 has a similar cargo volume of around 16 cu.ft.

Even after close to 4 years since the inception of the all-new generation of the Dodge Charger, the car still looks the part, mainly due to its menacing design language coupled with the aggressive front end. The blacked-out honeycomb grille and striking LED DRLs along with the bulging hood line helps in showcasing unmatched road presence. The side profile is designed in the traditional American muscle car design philosophy with subtle creases and body lines and fender flares.
The large 20-inch alloy wheel also helps to provide a vicious appearance to the side profile. With the LED treatment for the taillights along with a neatly integrated spoiler and macho-looking bumpers with dual exhaust outlets on offer, the rear looks as sexy as the front and side profile of the 2018 Dodge Charger.

Though the 2018 Dodge Charger is one of the best-looking mid-size sedans of the segment annihilating the bland-looking Toyota Avalon, we do appreciate the classy design of the Chrysler 300. The design of the Chrysler 300 is quite timeless and the sedan still looks the part even after many years of being in production. However, the Charger and Stinger are quite handsome too. Complementing the Chargers look is the impressive width and wheelbase on offer, all of which contribute to even more road presence and is most likely to turn many heads. Some of the additional exterior features of the 2018 Dodge Charger are mentioned below:
The recent offerings from the American manufacturer, Dodge, have always been quite appreciated for their impeccable built quality on offer coupled with superior safety performance owing to excellent scores garnered by them in the NHTSA and IIHS crash tests. The 2018 Dodge Charger also follows the same ethos of the brand. The Charger feels well built inside out due to the construction happening mainly in high-tensile steel. Even the fiber parts like the front and rear bumpers are also much superior in comparison to the Asian offering, and could easily withstand light impacts, without transferring into the cabin.
Along with the superior build quality on offer, the 2018 Dodge Charger also received the highest 5-star overall rating in the NHTSA crash test and a good rating in almost all the subsections of the IIHS test. One of the other reasons why the 2018 Dodge Charger managed to reveal itself as one of the safest offerings of the segment is due to the availability of many advanced active and passive safety features. Some of these features are mentioned below:
2018 Dodge Charger vs. Chrysler 300
Like the Charger, the Nissan Maxima is also a sports sedan. However, while the Charger has an old-school muscle car attitude, the Maxima is a modern lithe performer with a smooth V6 and 8-speed automatic transmission. The Maxima’s interior looks and feels a class above that of the Charger and it's more efficient as well. However, the Charger is more spacious in the rear seats and has a lot more attitude.
2018 Dodge Charger vs. Toyota Avalon
The Toyota Avalon is as iconic as the Charger and now it’s practical as well. It has a huge cabin even for a full-size sedan complemented by a large trunk. Its interior feels better than the Chargers and it gets more standard equipment than charger as well. The Avalon's V6 is slightly lower on power as compared to the Charger, but more efficient on fuel economy.
2018 Dodge Charger vs. Kia Stinger
The Kia Stinger is one of the modern sedans with its striking design and modern equipment. But the stinger is slightly lower on power ad thus is slower on acceleration as well. But the lowered power engine is most efficient and provides the best fuel economy. The interior is spacious and provides a premium feel overall. It also provides the best in class cargo capacity and thus is more practical.
if you are shopping for a sensible and practical full-size sedan, there is no dearth of options. However, if you desire a V8 engine rear-wheel-drive 4-door muscle car that’s as American as the Apple Pie, there is no alternative other than the Dodge Charger. A long fat bonnet, “coke bottle” lines, and a range of HEMI V8 screaming through the straight exhaust is right out of the good old days. Even the color options like Maximum Steel and Yellow Jacket remind you of the American superhero series and they are augmented with plenty of go-faster stripes.
What’s even more impressive is that nostalgia is not the only reason to buy a charger – it's roomy and comfortable, has the best in the industry infotainment system, rides and handles nicely delivers decent fuel economy, and now there is an All-Wheel Drive option as well. The Dodge Charger may be the last remaining American 4-door muscle car, but it’s here to stay with its wide breadth of capability.
