Overall Rating
The 2016 Subaru Impreza still carries forward the same 2.0-liter engine that is decent on power output and thus competitive in this segment. Along with that, the Impreza is great on fuel economy that makes it low on operating costs
Not many small sedans come as standard with an AWD drivetrain, heated exterior mirrors, and various safety features as standard- the 2016 Subaru Impreza is one that does. Starting at just over $19,000 for the manual transmission, the Impreza offers so much more versatility and hence has been the preferred choice for many, especially in the north.
The Subaru Impreza is in fact the only small sedan to offer AWD and that pretty much limits your option if you just have to have one, but then there are various other tricks up its sleeve for buyers to consider this sporty, outdoorsy and capable sedan, taking cues from its rally-inspired WRX and WRX STI siblings. The 2016 Subaru Impreza faces tight competition from the Toyota Corolla and the Volkswagen Jetta, but manages to hold its ground in tremendous ways.Â
The 2.0i Premium trim offers loads of features and comfort while also keeping the prices in check. For under a couple of thousand dollars more, this trim adds up 2 more speakers in the audio system, gets heated front seats, an STI spoiler, a tire pressure monitoring system, and much more.

The 2016 Subaru Impreza sedan is offered in three trims with the base 2.0i trim getting an option for a manual gearbox whereas the other two feature a CVT gearbox. Most of the features available in the Impreza are available from the base to trim itself with the higher trims getting more comfort and luxury. Subaru allows you to pick several upgrades for your Impreza, regardless of what trim you go for. The following table enlists all the trims and key features offered with the 2016 Subaru Impreza.

The Subaru Impreza 2.0i Premium trim offers loads of features and comfort while also keeping the prices in check. For under a couple of thousand dollars more, this trim adds up to 2 more speakers in the audio system, gets heated front seats, an STI spoiler, a tire pressure monitoring system, and much more.
The higher starting price of the Subaru Impreza is owing to the standard AWD drivetrain which many of the competitors don’t even have as an option. The 2.0-liter Boxer-4 engine produces a healthy 148 horsepower and 145 lb-ft of torque which is mated to either a 5-speed manual or a CVT transmission on the base trim, higher trims get only the CVT. The 2016 Subaru Impreza goes from 0 to 60 mph in 9.0 seconds, whereas the quarter-mile is covered in 17.0 seconds flat.
Power is delivered plentifully, and while the Ipreza doesn't drive like a sportscar, the engine makes enough power to let you execute comfortable overtakes in the city and on highways. The CVT works just fine, without showing the slightest sign of athletism. The CVT gearbox, however, works wonderfully well in the city, thanks to seamless gearshifts that don't wear you out during slow moving traffic. All in all, the over performance package with the 2016 Subaru Impreza is satisfactory, and the sedan takes a tough fight with competitors in this regard.

The Volkswagen Jetta offers the most powerful engine in this lineup and hence is the fastest in the acceleration tests. The Toyota Corolla generates the least engine output and hence is last in terms of performance. Although the Hyundai Elantra has lower engine output than the Subaru, it is marginally faster and is also cheaper than the Impreza.
The 2016 Subaru Impreza stands as a fairly fuel-efficient sedan. The standard AWD setup does increase the fuel consumption and that is evident in the ratings. The 2016 Subaru Impreza returns 25 mpg around the town and 34 mpg out on the highways. The combined fuel economy is rated at 28 mpg which, although, is decent, but the rivals offer much better ratings. The 14.5-gallon gas tank does ease things up as it offers a range of around 400 miles of combined driving on a single tank of gas.

The Volkswagen Jetta is the clear winner in this aspect as it is way more efficient than the Subaru and also features an identical size fuel tank. The Corolla and the Elantra both have identical fuel efficiency ratings with similar-sized fuel tanks. The Jetta has the longest driving range whereas the Elantra has the shortest range.
The 2016 Subaru Impreza offers a pretty basic and uninspiring interior that lacks the flare that some might want. However, we're happy to find that the build quality is pretty good and should last the test of time. Materials are decent for the segment but the fit and finish are pretty good even at this price range. The front seats are pretty comfortable and offer good support but the rear seats are compact and offer limited legroom which will be an issue for most adults. The 2016 Subaru Impreza also offers 12 cu-ft of cargo space, which is not the best, but is enough to haul luggage for the family weekend getaway.
All in all, the 2016 Subaru Impreza's interior feels functional and systematic. While there is nothing too opulent to keep you spoiled, the cabin offers great practicality in the form of storage cubbies and flexible rear seats. There's also a front cup holder that adds to the functionality of the Impreza. The steering wheel houses several user control, boosting the cabin's ergonomics. We love the small auxiliary screen mounted on the top of the dash, which helps in displaying additional driver information.Â

The Hyundai Elantra and the Subaru Impreza both offer spacious front seats but have to compromise on the rear seat space. The Jetta compromises a bit on the front but offers better legroom at the rear and a large trunk capacity. The best overall seats are offered by the Toyota Corolla which has loads of space for all its occupants and also has a decent cargo capacity. Some key interior features offered by the 2016 Subaru Impreza include:
Subaru offers a 6.2-inch touchscreen infotainment system with the 2016 model year Impreza. There's a basic 4-speaker sound system as standard, while on the higher trims, a couple of more speakers are added to the audio system alongside a larger 7-inch display. There is HD Radio and Internet Radio also available along with Starlink Cloud apps which adds a lot of functionality to the system. Satellite radio and satellite navigation are also a part of the equipment list on the higher variant. Some major infotainment features offered with the 2016 Subaru Impreza include:
Being a carryover model from the 2015 model year, the 2016 Impreza has nothing really different and continues with the easily identifiable Subaru design with the low-slung body style and sleek looks. Although the design does remind us of the older cars from Mitsubishi, the styling is kept fresh with an STI-inspired spoiler, boomerang-shaped DRLs, and modern HID headlamps.
The 2016 model year Impreza features sharp styling elements throughout the exterior, which aptly matches the sedan's understated athletic personality. The Impreza is also offered with chunky wheels, which adds to the sedan's sporty DNA. We love the sharp folds on the sedan's hood, which gently run up to the windshield. There are also subtle uses of chrome throughout the exterior, such as on the door handles, on the grille, and near the fog lights.

Although the Volkswagen Jetta is the longest and widest in this comparison, the Impreza offers a similar wheelbase despite being shorter by a considerable margin. The Elantra is the shortest car and yet has the longest wheelbase along with being the lightest car here. All sedans have similar levels of ground clearance with very little to differentiate between them.
Much like the rest of the Subaru lineup, the 2016 Subaru Impreza stands as a very safe vehicle for daily use. Safety has been an utmost priority for Subaru for ages now and that is clearly seen in the crash test reports by the NHTSA and the IIHS. On one hand, the NHTSA has rated the Impreza with a 5-star rating and on the other hand, the IIHSA has awarded it with their prestigious ‘Top Safety Pick+’ award. The list of safety technologies is also long and some of them are listed below.
Although there haven’t been any significant changes to the Subaru Impreza for a while now, it still offers a lot of practicality and value with its solid performance, no matter the road conditions, thanks to a great AWD setup. The rear seats are cramped and the luggage capacity is also not one of the best. Yet the car offers good value for money and is a safe offering for you and your family in case you finalize on one. All in all, there's little to complain about the 2016 Subaru Impreza, with the sedan offering an impressive package of comfort and refinement. We strongly recommend considering it for your next purchase.
