Overall Rating
Subaru has finally launched the 2022 Impreza sedan in the market at a price of $18,795 for the base trim with the 5-speed manual transmission. Subaru hasn't made any changes to the sedan with the exception of adding a shade of Blue as an exterior color option and removing the Limited trim from the sedan lineup. The Subie continues to be powered by a 152 hp producing naturally-aspirated boxer-4 motor.
The 2022 Subaru Impreza continues to be offered in the sedan and hatchback body styles, and carries over unchanged for the 2022 model year. The 2022 model gets a new Blue exterior color, and the sedan model is now available in only three trims as compared to the four on the previous model year. The Limited trim will only be offered on the hatchback model. Unlike most cars, the Impreza continues to be priced at the same MSRP of $18,795 and goes up to $23,595.
The Impreza from Subaru has been one of the most popular sedans in the midsize sedan category. With an enthusiastic Boxer 4 motor, superior handling, and driving dynamics courtesy of its standard AWD, the Impreza has been garnering good sales for Subie over the past many years. However, the Impreza faces competition from the best-in-class cars, namely the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla, and the Hyundai Elantra.
The 2022 Subaru Impreza Premium trim for $22,195 is the one we recommend. The base Impreza is very well equipped, but the slight premium one pays for the Premium trim adds a ton of creature comforts such as heated seats, better suspension, and paddle shifters along with Subaru's EyeSight suite of driver safety aids.

"The Impreza's best feature is value." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Subaru Impreza remains mostly unchanged from last year, and is offered with the same trims and the same pricing. For 2022, the Limited trim is available only on the hatchback models, and the sedan is exclusively offered with three trims: Base, Premium, and Sport. Pricing for the trims starts from $18,795 and goes up to $23,595. Also, the car comes with an additional destination fee of $960 in most states whereas Alaska demands a fee of $1,110. Standard features include cloth upholstery, cruise control, power windows and door locks, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Subaru is offering 2 packages with the 2022 Impreza. On the Premium trim, customers get the option of adding an optional package with Power Moonroof, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Keyless Access with Push-Button Start, and 6-way power driver’s seat for an MSRP of $1,970. The top-end Sport trim adds an optional package that features a Power Moonroof, Blind-Spot Detection with Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Harmon Kardon amplifier, and speakers, a 6-way power driver’s seat for an additional MSRP of $2,470.

"It's not quick, though it has ample power for daily-commuter duty." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Subaru Impreza continues to be powered by the same 2.0L engine seen on the 2021 model. This Boxer-4 motor outputs 152 hp and has a torque output of 145 lb-ft. The Impreza is the only car in this segment that comes with AWD as standard. The base trim is available with a 5-speed manual and a CVT for a premium of $1,300. The higher two trims come standard with the CVT and are not offered with a manual gearbox.
The engine does make decent power and torque, but the power delivery is not satisfactory, and the engine has a buzzy and lazy character. The manual gearbox might be preferred over the CVT, but it's more unpredictable and consistently notchy. The ride quality does help with this, as the strut and double-wishbone suspension setup on the Impreza absorb most bumps and undulations without transmitting them to the cabin.
The driving dynamics on the Impreza speak a different story. The steering is super responsive, quick to turn, and very well-weighted with excellent communication with the tires. The handling on the Impreza is even better, as the AWD setup helps with more grip and there's minimal body roll around corners. The chassis is very stable, and combined with the suspension it converts into a composed ride all around.

The four cars are quite similarly priced, but the Elantra is the cheapest of the lot and is around $250 cheaper than the Impreza. The Civic makes the most power, whereas the Impreza outputs the most torque. The newly launched Civic comes out as the fastest compact sedans in the segment, beating the Subaru by quite some margin and edging out the Elantra and the Corolla. All cars come with FWD unlike the AWD on the Impreza.
"Pick a CVT for the best fuel economy." - The Car Connection
As we mentioned above, with no mechanical changes from the 2021 model, the 2022 Subaru Impreza will deliver the same mileage as the 2021 model. The 5-speed manual Subaru returns 23 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined. The CVT, however, is the one we recommend, thanks to its better mileage of 28 MPG city, 36 MPG highway, and 32 MPG combined. Coupled with the 13.2-gallon tank provides a combined range of 422 miles.

The Elantra is the most efficient car in the lot, with a combined mileage of 37 MPG. The Impreza is the least efficient at 32 MPG combined. In terms of range, there is still no beating the Korean Elantra that offers over 400 miles of driving range in the city, besting the ever-efficient Corolla by the smallest of margins. The new 2022 Civic too, does offer a good balance between power and efficiency as it manages to surpass the MPG figures of the AWD-driven Subie.
"The Impreza's interior maybe short on style, but it's tops in design." - Car and Driver
The Subaru Impreza has taken a lot of inspiration for its interiors from its elder sibling, the Legacy. The dashboard has a lot of dark greys and so does the center console. Subaru still offers the highly comfortable golf club-style shifter and the handbrake on the inside. The interior is slightly behind the competitors, despite the soft-touch plastics and the excellent fit and finish leaving an impressive mark on the passengers. However, its highly functional and useful layout gets its full marks from us for design.
The Impreza can seat up to 5 passengers, and the available space is excellent. The front seats are slightly on the firmer side, but they are very well bolstered and comfortable for long journeys. The rear seats are flat but have enough cushioning to aid long journeys in the Impreza. The sedan Impreza is easy to get in and get out of as well, thanks to the wide-opening doors and low seat height. Visibility is better in the hatchback, as the sedan limits visibility in the rear due to its roof pillars and its long body.

In terms of space offered for passengers, not only is the 43.1 inches of legroom in the first row the maximum but the 36.5 inches of legroom at the back is also just 0.9 inches less than what the 2022 Honda Civic offers. In terms of interiors, the Elantra offers the most space for passengers at the front, while the Corolla may seem cramped for taller passengers. The 2022 Impreza offers only a 12.3 cu-ft boot, which ranks as one of the least in the segment. The Honda Civic with its 14.8 cu-ft boot is the most practical four-door of the segment.
In terms of infotainment, the Impreza has 2 options. In the base and Premium trims, you get a 6.5-inch touchscreen-enabled infotainment setup as standard with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moving up to the Sport trim, you will get to see an 8-inch screen that also features built-in Navigation. This interface is easy and intuitive, and the graphics are sharp as well. Some of the interior features on the Impreza are:
"Subtle and clean, the Impreza doesn't reach for the stars." - The Car Connection
The 2022 Subaru Impreza’s exterior design has not been changed at all when compared to the 2021 model. The dimensions, features, and details on the outside remain exactly the same on the 2022 model as the 2021 model. However, for 2022, as part of adding a fresh feel to the car, Subaru has introduced a new Sapphire Blue Pearl exterior color on the 2022 Impreza across all its trims.
The low ride-height and tapered ends on offer in the Impreza make it look sportier and longer than it actually is. The sharp lines and creases running all along the sides make this Subie look sporty and agile. The front end is low, and the wide grille with the sharp headlamps gives the car a mean look. At the rear, the car has a very bold look that might not appeal to all. Dimensionally, the car is 182 inches long, with a wheelbase of 105 inches.

In terms of specs, the new Elantra is the longest vehicle in this comparison, which also aids in a great balance between available interior space and cargo space. The Civic tops in terms of available ground clearance at 6.3 inches, an inch over the other three. The Corolla is similar proportionally more to the Impreza on paper but it's slightly larger and has more space. Some exterior features on the Impreza are:
"The Impreza earns excellent crash-test scores." - The Car Connection
The NHTSA rated the 2022 Impreza with a score of 5 stars and the IIHS gave the Impreza a ‘Good’ rating for its safety on offer, same as last year's model. Driver Safety aids like forwarding collision alert, rear-cross traffic alert, and auto-emergency braking make it stand up against the likes of its competitors. Also, the improved chassis architecture dissipates the shock waves across the whole body away from the cabin in a crash. Some of the safety features are:
The 2022 Honda Civic is a direct rival to the Impreza. Both the cars come in sedan and hatchback body styles, have excellent driving dynamics and both get underpowered base engines. The Civic gets a turbocharged engine, better economy, larger cargo space, and also comes in a hot hatch. The Civic's interior is one of the best in this segment, and with top-notch materials, modern tech, and a comfortable seating. The Impreza against the Civic has only AWD in its arsenal, and everything else is better on the Civic making it the better choice here.
The 2022 Toyota Corolla and the Impreza share a lot of of positives and negatives. Both these cars have an underpowered engine with sluggish acceleration, a composed ride quality, decent interior with comfortable seats, and also simple infotainment systems. The Toyota, however, has better fuel economy and better reliability. The Impreza has AWD, and slightly more useful cargo space. However, the Corolla is the better choice for the lot.
The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is the better choice against the Impreza. Both the cars have very little in common. Everything that the Impreza does, the Elantra does it better. Better acceleration, better fuel economy, better interiors, better cargo capacity, and better looks as well. The Impreza only has two benefits here: All-wheel-drive and the hatchback body style which is not offered on the Elantra. The Elantra is more affordable as well.
The 2022 Subaru Impreza is a carry-forward model from last year and has already gone on sale in the country for $18,795. However, with that being said, it is one of the most fuel-efficient AWD vehicles in the country and offers tremendous reliability and peace of mind. It does fall behind its rivals in terms of engine performance and overall interior quality, but the superior driving dynamics and a function-focused design help the Impreza to be an affordable and useful practical car.
