Overall Rating
The 2021 Subaru Legacy is a carryover model with the same specs and features from 2020. Part of the changes this year is the addition of more safety features as standard. Available for sale in 6 trims, the MSRP starts from $22,895 and goes up to $36,145 for the Touring XT trim with the 260 hp 2.4L turbocharged engine and a 0-60 mph time of 6.1 secs. The interior strikes the perfect balance between spacious comfort and practicality with its large dimensions.
The all-new 2021 Subaru Legacy retains the same specs and features post its redesign in 2020 and only adds more safety features as part of the changes. Available for sale in 6 trims at nearest Subaru dealerships, the price for the 2021 Subaru Legacy starts from $22,895 for the Base trim and climbs almost 14 grand to $36,145 for the top-tier Touring XT trim which does not include the $1,837 destination fee. Under the hood, a 182 hp 2.5L boxer-4 powertrain is a standard fitment for all the trims from Base to Limited.
The Limited XT and Touring XT trims are successors to the Subaru Legacy GT and get a 260 hp 2.4L turbocharged boxer-4 engine. Packed with features, the interior is comfy and feels premium for the price it demands. Though owning is not much of a hassle, the 2021 Subaru Legacy has lease deals starting as low as $316/month. Being a mid-size family saloon, it finds itself competing with the top sellers of other Japanese automakers as well. The foremost competitors are the Toyota Camry, Honda Accord, and Nissan Altima.
While each trim of the 2021 Subaru Legacy, the brand tries to offer a feature-rich build to justify the price it asks, however, the Sport trim strikes the right bargain for its price. With features like Sport upholstery and upgrades in the safety suite, this trim should be the one to pick. That being said, if you want the test of the best things, then the Limited XT trim should be the one to pick as it throws in the best features for the price it demands from the buyers.

Don't let the Subaru Legacy's lack of flair fool you; behind that conservative sheet metal is a strong midsize sedan with the ability to conquer all seasons.- MotorTrend
Post the remodel, the 2021 Subaru Legacy has become quite radical. To that avail, it is offered in 6 trim levels, namely- Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT. The prices start from $22,895 with the Base and climb all the way up to $36,145 with the Touring XT. The Sport trim is the hot favorite in the standard powertrain while the Limited XT and Touring XT serve as the replacement for the Subaru Legacy GT with the 260 hp turbocharged engine under the hood.
Right from the start, you get the AWD as standard along with LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, and the Subaru Starlink infotainment system. As you go up the trim levels, the seat upholstery changes from cloth to leather while the infotainment system grows in size to an 11.6-inch touchscreen unit. From the Limited trim onwards, for almost 30 grand, you also get the Harman Kardon Premium Sound System as standard fitment as well.

Regardless of which engine is under the hood, the new Legacy boasts slightly improved handling dynamics and a compliant ride.- Car And Driver
Under the hood of the 2021 Subaru Legacy offers a choice of two powertrains. While the initial 4 trims get a 2.5L naturally aspirated boxer-4 engine that produces 182 hp and 176 lb-ft of torque, the XT trims are the true successors to the Legacy GT and hence get a 2.4L turbocharged boxer-4 engine that produces a net output of 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. The latter powertrain is also the same one that you see in the Subaru Ascent. Both of the powertrains come mated to a CVT transmission that tames the power from the engine and puts it on all the wheels through the symmetrical AWD drivetrain.
The 2021 Subaru Legacy is no exception for the fun-to-drive characteristics that Subarus are known for. With the symmetrical AWD in place, it gets the capability to tread off-roads at a moment's notice. Despite the CVTs being famous for killing performance, the Subaru's CVT does not let the performance streak from drying out. The transmission slides through the gears with buttery smoothness and lets you get a feel for the elements given the price you shell out. The suspension and steering system work in perfect harmony and one of the key aspects of feedback from the steering wheel is already appreciated as they provide ample feedback to the driver.
The 2021 Subaru Legacy Touring XT with the turbocharged unit goes from 0-60 mph marker in 6.1 seconds. With the 2.5L naturally aspirated engine, the 0-60 MPH is completed in about 8.4 seconds. The quarter-mile run for the Legacy takes about 16.5 seconds with the 2.5L block and 14.7 seconds with the turbocharged 2.4L motor. Thanks to these numbers, despite getting the additional weight of an all-wheel drive, the ride still manages to find its groove. For the price, The brakes on the 2021 Subaru Legacy have also been beefed up significantly. You get 12.4-inch rotors in the front and 11.8” rotors in the rear, which can bring it to a complete halt from 60-0 MPH in a stopping distance of 127 feet.

Looking at the rivals, in the standard outfit, the Subaru Legacy does seem to be shorthanded, however, it changes to an all-powerful pricey one when you pick up the XT trim levels. That being said, in the current avatar, the Toyota Camry has the best figures across the board and the Honda Accord follows suit in the second place. The Nissan Altima is also only slightly more powerful which is why the Subaru Legacy does not find any standing on the podium.
The Legacy is slightly thirstier than most front-wheel-drive rivals, but it's nearly identical to the AWD Nissan Altima.- Edmunds
The 2021 Subaru Legacy is part of one of the most highly coveted segments of automobiles and hence tries to offer MPG figures befitting of the price and stature it carries. With the standard powertrain, you get 27 MPG in the city, 35 MPG on the highway, and 30 MPG combined. For the XT trim levels with the 2.4L turbocharged powertrain, the MPG drops to 24 MPG in the city, 32 MPG on the highway, and 27 MPG combined.
With both of the powertrains, the fuel tank capacity is the same at 18.5 gallons which allows you to get 555 miles with the standard powertrain and 500 miles with the turbocharged powertrain. In either case, you get a decent driving range that is more than enough to take you cross-country after a full refuel.

Among the adversaries, the Honda Accord gets the best MPG figures in the city and overall while the Nissan Altima and Toyota Camry get the best highway MPG figures. The Subaru Legacy doesn't find any standing in any regard as it suffers from a "gas-guzzler" powertrain and hence bites the dust of all of its competitors.
This Subaru rivals some luxury vehicles with its well-appointed and upscale cabin.- Cars.USNews
Take a seat in the interiors of the 2021 Subaru Legacy, and you will find that for the price it asks, it has more upscale treatment than it ever had in the previous generation. There is immense use of soft-touch hard plastics in the lower trims while the leather upholstery for the dashboard and door panels is reserved for the upper trims. The steering wheel is the same old three-spoke design that is reminiscent of the true Subaru vibe while the driver display is still analog. The lower trims get cloth upholstery while the Sport trim throws in red contrast stitching to add a bit of zest. The Limited trim and Limited XT trims get premium leather upholstery while the flagship Touring XT trim gets the top-of-the-line Nappa Leather upholstery.Â
The front seats are heated, cozy, and comfortable with ample headroom and legroom in the front seats to find the perfect spot even for the tall guys. There is optional power-adjustability for the driver seat in the lower trims which becomes standard from the Sport trim onwards. With the XT trims, you get power-adjustable front seats with memory. The 2021 Subaru Legacy gets bench rear seats that can comfortably seat three people. Even at full capacity, the sedan does not feel cramped at all, the rear center passenger might find a slightly restless experience due to the driveshaft tunnel that passes through the center of the car and bites into the rear cabin predominantly.

In this lineup, the spacious cabin of the 2021 Subaru Legacy does a great job despite a slightly smaller overall build. The Honda Accord does not leave any stone unturned as it achieves the top spot in terms of cabin space. The Toyota Camry is unfortunately on the slightly shorter end of the spectrum while the Nissan Altima is out in the rough on account of shoving all the space in the front and lesser space in the back. Depending on the trim you choose, the infotainment system on the 2021 Subaru Legacy will change. With the base trim, you get a fairly barebones 7-inch Subaru Starlink Touchscreen infotainment system while all the other trims get the bigger and better refined and feature-rich 11.6-inch Multimedia Subaru Starlink Touchscreen.
For the smaller system, a 4-speaker setup is available which is upgraded to 6-speakers in all the trims up to Premium. From the Limited trim onwards, you get the 10-speaker Harman Kardon Surround Sound System. Both of the systems are intuitive and a breeze to get used to, and offer all of the basic connectivity techs like Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, USB, and AUX. Besides these, as you move up the trim ladder, the features keep getting added to justify the surge in price. The highlight features of the interior and infotainment system of the 2021 Subaru Legacy are:
While the platform and mechanicals have been revamped with this new-gen Legacy, its styling is more evolutionary.- KBB
On the outside, the 2021 Subaru Legacy looks absolutely striking with its athletic yet subtle guise. The grown-up dimensions like the length of 190.6-inches give it a strong and mature visual presence and the signature design cues make it stand out in its segment. For 2021, the front grille is a bit wider and sits lower than its outgoing model while the LED headlights get a sharper look design adding to the bold and aggressive feels. It also gets a lower lip with air vents that add to the overall stylish appeal in front of more stylish competitors like the Honda Accord or the Toyota Camry.
While the Base trim gets 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, all of the other trims are riding on 18-inch wheels. It gets all-season tires as standard fitment while the wheels get redesigned and more stylish as you move up the trim levels. By the time you reach the XT trims, the wheels simply look elegant and stylish. This helps in increasing the ground clearance to 5.9-inches that comes in handy when you are taking it off-roading for some adventure fun. As you move to the rear side of the 2021 Subaru Legacy, you will notice the conventional Subaru design language that does not strike too much of a distinctive touch.

When compared to the rivals, the Subaru Legacy easily stands out as the heaviest one with the shortest length. The Nissan Altima is the lightest one despite being the longest while the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry are both somewhere in the middle dimensionally. However, style-wise, the 2021 Subaru Legacy is probably on the back foot since all of its competitors look spectacular in their own regard. That being said, it does offer a majestic road presence owing to its broad dimensions. The other standout features of the exteriors are:
The Legacy sports a flawless crash-test record, and with good outward vision and safety options, it’s perfect 10.- The Car Connection
With the 2020 remodel, the Subaru Legacy retained the ethos of the brand and yet made sweeping changes to the underlying structure for better structural rigidity. 90% of all the components in the entire build are new which further bolsters its stance. Due to these, the 2021 Subaru Legacy scored a perfect 5-star safety rating in the crash tests from the NHTSA. With the IIHS, the 2021 Legacy scored an overall "Good" rating along with the award for the 2021 Top Safety Pick+.
Part of the upgrades for the 2021 Subaru Legacy is the souping up of the standard safety suite on the ride. One of the most welcome changes is the availability of Lane Change Assist, seat belt reminder, and follow-me-home steering responsive headlights as standard right from the Base trim. Some of the notable safety features of the 2021 Subaru Legacy:
The 2021 Honda Accord is the top seller for the Honda in the mid-size sedan segment and is simply one of the best out there. Loaded with features, it offers comfortable interiors and gets a more powerful engine as well. The MPG figures are also better and the exterior styling cues are simplistic yet elegant along with the tell-tale reliability of being a Honda. The difference between the 2021 Subaru Legacy and the 2021 Honda Accord comes out in full display when you consider the fact that the former gets a full-time AWD that allows it to tread off-roads easily.
The 2021 Nissan Altima has been the front runner for the automaker as it literally flies off the racks and rakes in great sales. Priced only marginally higher, the Altima looks much better, offers a more refined cabin that is technologically sound and feature-loaded. The drive experience is also supple while along with improved MPG figures as compared to the 2021 Subaru Legacy. Furthermore, it comes with the well-known reliability of Nissan that makes it convenient to own in the long term. While the 2021 Nissan Altima does strike a hard bargain, the 2021 Subaru Legacy offers the world-famous symmetrical AWD, and a raw power-packed drive. Hence, it boils down to which one you want to opt for.
The 2021 Toyota Camry is the choice of ride for those who want the laid back old man driving pleasure in the tried and tested reliable build. Backed by the most powerful engine in this lineup, best in class MPG figures, feature-rich and comfortable interiors, most outlandish exterior design, and an advanced safety suite, the 2021 Toyota Camry is simply the best one in this lineup. In front of the raw prowess of the Camry, the 2021 Subaru Legacy finds it hard to fend for itself as it does not have anything going for itself besides the lower starting price and the full-time AWD.
As a standalone, the 2021 Subaru Legacy makes a strong case for itself with a distinct approach, raw driving experience, and a feature-packed build for a lower offer price than many others of the segment. However, in front of its top-selling and power-packed competitors from its own home turf of Japan, the 2021 Subaru Legacy falls short in a lot of aspects. Hence, it boils down to your brand and features preference to pick a car in this segment.
