Overall Rating
The Subaru Legacy in 2022 offers a traditional design with functional underpinnings including a standard AWD drivetrain.
The Subaru Legacy in 2022 offers a traditional design with functional underpinnings including a standard AWD drivetrain. The Legacy doesn’t look over futuristic like many of its competitors and it has a traditional yet good-looking exterior that I’m sure many would appreciate as there is a huge section of people who think cars are getting the drastic so-called ‘futuristic’ treatment on the exterior which is quite strange. For 2022 the seventh generation Subaru Legacy carries over with minor changes and with slight additions to the feature list. Let’s see if the Legacy is capable enough to hold up against the more updated-looking machines.
Opting for the Limited XT trim would be the best option as it comes with a stronger, more punchy engine under the hood and provides a more responsive driving experience. However, the XT trims are much more expensive compared to the base models with the naturally aspirated engine. And among them, the Sport trim offers the best balance between price and features making it the best choice if you’re looking for a car at a reasonable price in the segment.

The 2022 Subaru Legacy is already out on sale and you could book one from the nearest dealership or online via the Subaru website.
There are two powertrain combinations on offer with the 2022 Subaru Legacy. The base Legacy models are powered by a naturally aspirated 2.5-liter DOHC direct-injection aluminum-alloy 16-valve 4-cylinder horizontally opposed Subaru Boxer (Flat 4) engine putting out 182 hp and 176 lb-ft. This engine comes mated to a Lineartronic CVT transmission with Adaptive Control and 8-speed manual mode with paddle shifters. The XT models are powered by a stronger 2.4-liter DOHC Direct-Injection Turbocharged (DIT) flat engine with Dual Active Valve Control System (DAVCS) producing 260 hp and 277 lb-ft of maximum power and torque mated to the same transmission that in this model comes slightly tweaked to handle more power and torque.
The base engine takes 8 seconds to reach a speed of 60mph and the quarter-mile is crossed in 16.2 seconds, while the stronger engine could achieve the same feat in 6.1 and 14.7 seconds respectively. The base engine is weak and doesn’t compliment an aggressive driving style. while the turbocharged engine is punchy and much more responsive and offers a much better driving experience at the cost of fuel efficiency. The smaller engine is limited to a top speed of 130 mph while the stronger engine could reach 10mph higher. Even though the handling is not the best in the segment, the Legacy handles pretty well, the road grip is great and the steering is well-communicative and responsive. The car also offers an impressive ride quality making it a good choice in the segment.

The 2022 Toyota Camry is the most powerful one here, while the Honda Accord is the fastest one, taking 7.2 seconds to the 60 mph mark. The Legacy with the base engine happens to be the slowest one here while the difference is not drastic and it is less than a second slower than the fastest one here. The Kia K5 boasts the highest top speed of 155 mph while the fastest accelerating Accord has the lowest top speed. The truth about these cars is that none of them are joy-to-drive machines but comparatively the Honda Accord is the more engaging one to drive.
The 2022 Subaru Legacy puts out reasonable fuel efficiency numbers. The base engine outputs a fuel economy of 27 mpg in the city, 35 on the highway, and a combined efficiency of 30 mpg. The turbocharged engine brings these figures down to 24, 32, and 27 respectively. The base engine of the Legacy is not the best in the segment while the stronger engine offers the best efficiency compared to the stronger engine option of the rivals. The Legacy has a super high capacity 18.5-gallon fuel tank and delivers a combined range of 555 miles while the turbo engine could reach around 500 miles.

The 2022 Subaru Legacy offers great fuel efficiency numbers along with the segment-best fuel capacity and range. The fastest machine here, the Honda Accord is also the most efficient one that making it a superb choice. The Toyota Camry has the smallest fuel capacity of 14.4-gallons and the range is also significantly lower compared to the competitors, but if you opt for the 3.5 L V6 engine in the Camry, you get a larger fuel tank. Overall the Subaru Legacy is an impressive choice in terms of fuel efficiency.
The 2022 Subaru Legacy offers one of the roomiest interiors in the segment with impressive second-row legroom of 39.5-inches. The cabin is airy and built up with premium and high-quality materials. The seats in the base and Premium trims comes with cloth upholstery, while the Sport trim gets two-tone gray cloth upholstery with red stitching whereas the Limited trims feature leather-trimmed upholstery which further gets upgraded to Sierra Tan Nappa leather-trimmed upholstery in the highest-end Touring XT trim. Except in the base trim, all other models come with a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter handle that is a nice addition and it looks and feels premium.
The seats are supportive and are 6-way manually adjustable in the base trim while the mid-level trims feature 10-way adjustable powered seats along with 4-way manually adjustable front passenger seats. The top-end models feature 8-way powered seats for the front passenger while the driver seat gains 2-position memory. The same is the case with heating functionality as the base models get heated front row seats, mid-level trims gain heating for the rear seats whereas the top-end Touring XT trim gets 3-mode ventilated front seats. The Legacy comes with a pretty spacious cargo capacity measuring 15.1 cu-ft.

Once again, the Accord shines bright with the most spacious interior in the segment. It also offers the largest trunk along with a premium quality interior. However, ingress and egress is a bit hard to and fro in the Accord, while the Subaru Legacy is also a superb choice in terms of interior quality and space. The Kia K5 features a technologically advanced interior but lacks second-row space, whereas the Camry has an uninspiring interior design. The following are the main interior features in the 2022 Subaru Legacy-
The 2022 Subaru Legacy comes with a 7.0-inch infotainment unit along with 4 speakers in the base trim while the higher-end trims feature a larger 11.6-inch unit along with two extra speakers. The top-end Limited and the Xt variants come equipped with a Harman Kardon premium audio system with a 576-watt-equivalent amplifier and 12 speakers, including a center dash speaker and subwoofer. The 11.6-inch touchscreen unit is responsive and intuitive while the vertical layout and slightly lower placement of the screen would be bit distracting. The following are the main infotainment features in the 2022 Subaru Legacy-
The 2022 Subaru Legacy is one the best-looking machines in the segment with a stylish and sporty design language accentuating the true character of the machine. The Legacy looks premium and sporty at the same time and it is a treat to look at. The 2022 Legacy is offered in seven shades and all of these colors might not be available with the trim you choose. The Legacy has the smallest overall exterior dimensions and the shortest wheelbase while having a comparatively more spacious cabin.
Sport trim comes with the Sport appearance upgrades including a sport front grille, Crystal Black Silica mirror caps, a sport rear bumper, Black metallic-finish aluminum-alloy wheels, and a trunk spoiler. The highest-end Touring XT trim also features some exclusive appearance upgrades that are a Crystal Black Silica pillar trim, automatic power-folding mirrors with Satin chrome, and body-color door handles with chrome inserts. Overall the Subaru Legacy gest an A-plus for exterior design and beauty.

Through my eyes, the Subaru is the best-looking one while others except the Camry look futuristically weird. The Legacy also is one of the most practical sedans in the segment, offering a class-leading ground clearance of 5.9-inches. However, the Subaru's curb weight, which is the highest among the competitors, drags it behind others in terms of acceleration whereas the the fastest car in the segment, the Accord, is also the lightest one here. The following are the main exterior features of the 2022 Subaru Legacy-
The 2022 Subaru Legacy comes equipped with a host of safety features as standard as every car is equipped with the proprietary EyeSight Driver Assist Technology consisting of Pre-Collision Braking System, Pre-Collision Throttle Management, Lane Departure, and Sway Warning and Advanced Adaptive Cruise Control with Lane Centering. Along with this safety suite, every Legacy also features Vehicle Dynamics Control (VDC) with Traction Control System (TCS), a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), and a high-resolution rear-vision camera. The 2022 Subaru Legacy has been crash-tested by NHTSA and it received an impressive overall 5-star rating while the 2021 Legacy was selected as one of their Top Safety Pick+ cars by IIHS which further concretes the fact that the 2022 Subaru Legacy is of the safest cars in the segment. The following are the main safety features incorporated in the 2022 Subaru Legacy-
The 2022 Kia K5 is a capable contender as it offers a slightly more torquey engine and a bit faster straight-line performance. The Kia also comes with a slightly higher fuel economy along with a bit more cargo room. However, the Legacy is the more comfortable and slightly better handling one offering a much more spacious interior. The Legacy also offers a much higher range along with a much more comfortable second row. Overall, the 2022 Subaru Legacy is the better choice.
The 2022 Honda Accord carries over with the same impressive performance and reliability. The Accord offers more power and better fuel economy compared to the Legacy while it also has a more spacious interior. The Legacy is better looking from outside and ingress and egress a bit easier. However, the Accord is definitely the better choice considering all factors.
The 2022 Toyota Camry is the most powerful machine while also being the least efficient one. The Legacy dominates the Camry in all other regards. It is more spacious, more efficient, and better looking than the Camry. The Legacy also offers a better set of standard safety features making it the overall better choice.
The 2022 Subaru Legacy offers a superb package with a lackluster performance from the base engine. But it is adequately powerful and the car handles pretty well while the efficiency numbers are also impressive. The interior of the Legacy is very much spacious and the cabin is built up with high-quality materials. The infotainment system is intuitive and the standard set of safety features, as well as the safety ratings, are top-notch. Overall, even though the Legacy is second to the Accord, it is still a superb machine for the price paid and it looks sporty and luxurious.
