About 2011 Hyundai Elantra

4.1

Overall Rating

The Hyundai Elantra gets a complete design and mechanical overhaul and carries the brand's all-new "Fluidic" design language for the 2011 model year. The sedan gets an excellent 1.8liter four-pot motor with respectable fuel economy and great driveability, making it a great city car.

The all-new Hyundai Elantra has shed its grumpy old look and has adorned the new age style and it’s now a lot more than just a pretty face. The 2011 Elantra offers a fuel-efficient engine alongside a feature-loaded cabin, abundant safety features, and a low price tag that would give any compact sedan in the market a run for its money.

Hyundai has completely revamped the Elantra for the 2011 model year, and it now features a strong and efficient engine, new 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and loads of other new equipment. Available at a base price of $15,695, the sedan is a compelling buy against the likes of the Honda Civic, Kia Forte, and the Toyota Corolla.

Unless you absolutely have to have heated seats for all occupants, it’s best to opt for the GLS trim which gets all the required fitment and also keeps the costs pretty low. The choice for the transmission depends on your personal preference as both work equally well in most scenarios.

2011 Hyundai Elantra Review

Pros

  • Great fuel efficiency
  • Feature-packed trims
  • Comfortable and well-built cabin
  • Distinctive styling

Cons

  • Average performance

The Hyundai Elantra gets a complete design and mechanical overhaul and carries the brand's all-new "Fluidic" design language for the 2011 model year. The sedan gets an excellent 1.8liter four-pot motor with respectable fuel economy and great driveability, making it a great city car.

Overview

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

Hyundai has not created a lot of distinction between the trims of the Elantra as you either get all of the necessary features or add-on some luxury, with only two trims on offer. The GLS trim available with both a manual and automatic transmission and features all the necessary technology and safety features that one might need, while the Limited trim is available with only an auto gearbox and gets all the bells and whistles that Hyundai has to offer.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The Hyundai Elantra’s powertrain is similar to the trim segmentation, simple and minimalistic. There is only one engine on offer, which is mated to either a manual or an automatic gearbox, and the power is sent to the front wheels only.

The 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine produces 148 horsepower and 131 lb-ft of torque and is mated to a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission. It takes 8.1 seconds to achieve 60 mph from standstill, whereas the quarter-mile is covered in 16.4 seconds.

Although the Toyota Corolla is the most expensive sedan in this comparison, it has the lowest engine output. The Kia Forte on the other hand is the cheapest of the lot and offers the highest power and torque figures. Thus, it is also the fastest in the acceleration tests and is followed by the Elantra with the Honda Civic right at its tail. The Corolla clearly lacks the grunt and is the slowest one here.

Fuel Economy
8.0/10

The 2011 Hyundai Elantra has improved its fuel efficiency from the previous model year considerably and now gets an EPA rating for 28 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highways. The overall combined fuel economy is rated at 32 mpg. The 12.8-gallon fuel tank is on the smaller side, which does affect the driving range as it is limited to just around 400 miles of combined city and highway driving range.

Only the Toyota Corolla comes close to the fuel efficiency of the Elantra but still falls short in front of its frugality. The Honda Civic and the Kia Forte offer similar fuel economy figures and also have an almost identical fuel tank, which translates to a similar driving range, which is a tad below what Elantra has to offer. Both the Corolla and the Elantra offer a marginally higher driving range than the other two.

Interior
8.8/10

The interior cabin design of the new age Elantra is pretty attractive, and while the quality of the material is not the best in the class, it has a rich and premium look and feel to it.

The cabin feels airy and spacious, and while there is ample room for front occupants, tall passengers at the rear could find things getting a bit tight in terms of legroom. But there is enough headroom to accommodate people of all sizes, and the 14.8 cu-ft cargo capacity is also one of the bests in the segment.

Toyota Corolla has the least amount of space up front but also has one of the most spacious rear seats in the segment. The Kia Forte on the other hand offers the best front and rear seat space balance. The Elantra clearly lacks in terms of legroom at the back as compared to others, whereas the Honda Civic too does not live up to the Forte standards. Both the Japanese sedans offer a similar-sized trunk, which is a bit smaller than the Korean siblings. Major interior features include-

  • 6-way adjustable driver seat w/height adjustment
  • Leather heated front bucket seats
  • 60/40 split fold-down heated rear seat
  • Leather-wrapped tilt/telescopic steering wheel
  • Leather-wrapped shift knob
  • Leatherette door trim insert
  • Remote keyless entry system w/alarm

How is the 2011 Hyundai Elantra Sedan’s infotainment system?

The stylish interior of the new Hyundai Elantra features a curved center stack and stylized climate controls which adds flair to the fluidic design language of Hyundai, which is carried forward inside the cabin as well. The infotainment and audio system is standard, which features satellite radio, Bluetooth, and navigation. Other key infotainment features include-

  • Infotainment system
  • 6-speaker audio system
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone system w/voice recognition
  • iPod/USB aux input jacks w/CD/MP3 player
  • Shark-fin antenna

Exterior
7.5/10

The exterior design of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra is a radical change from the mundane looking Elantra of the past. Hyundai likes to call it a fluidic design that features smooth flowing lines and curves that accentuate every crease on the body.

It gives the car a muscular and beefed-up look while also being aerodynamically sound. The large swooped back curved headlamps and tail lights also feel part of the fluidic design language.

The Toyota Corolla is the longest sedan here, but it has the shortest wheelbase, and hence has a cramped cabin as compared to the others. The Honda Civic is in stark contrast, is the shortest, and has the longest wheelbase, like that of the Elantra. The Civic and the Forte both offer the best ground clearance as well, but the other two are just marginally lower to the ground. Major exterior highlights of the Elantra are-

  • Halogen headlamps and fog lights
  • Body-color power heated exterior mirrors w/turn signal indicator lights
  • Black chrome grille
  • Power tilt/slide sunroof
  • Tinted glass
  • 17-inch alloy wheels

Safety
9.9/10

There are plenty of safety features and monitoring systems in the 2011 Hyundai Elantra that are in play to keep it and its occupants safe in all possible situations. Although the NHTSA has not crash-tested the Elantra yet, it scores well in the crash tests conducted by the IIHS. The list of safety features is pretty solid and most of them are available as standard on the Elantra. Some of them are listed below.

  • Vehicle Stability Management (VSM)
  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) w/Traction Control System (TCS)
  • Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist
  • Advanced dual front and seat-mounted side airbags w/Occupant Classification System
  • Front/rear roof-mounted side curtain airbags
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS)
  • Cruise Control

Final Verdict

The Hyundai Elantra has shed its older skin like a snake and the new one that it adorns is turning heads already. The engine is powerful and super-efficient, while there is plenty of features and safety equipment available right from the base trim. Although space is a bit of luxury that Elantra lacks at the back seat, the trunk is huge and can be ideal for an average nuclear American family.
