About 2022 Hyundai Elantra

4.1

Overall Rating

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is expected to be launched in Fall 2021 with 2 engine options on offer in form of the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated and 1.6-liter turbocharged Inline-4 cylinder engine producing 147 bhp of power and 201 bhp of power. It could see a few technological advancements in form of a 10.25 infotainment system and will be offered in both N Line and Hybrid versions as well.

Redesigned inside out just last year, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra sees no changes to its features and form factor. For 2022, however, Hyundai has added a more spirited and sportier version of the Elantra called the Elantra N-Line, that's similar to the GT-Line series of cars from Kia. The Hyundai Elantra is available at a starting MSRP of $19,850 and comes in 4 trim levels. The Elantra is powered by a 147 hp 2.0L I-4 engine paired to a CVT transmission and FWD.

Appealing and modern styling, comfortable interiors with tons of standard features, and a high fuel economy make the Elantra an affordable and economical compact sedan. However, its less exciting base engine, overuse of hard plastics, and small trunk keep it from being the best car against its competitors. The Elantra goes up against the Honda Civic, the Toyota Corolla, and the Kia Forte.

The Elantra’s SEL is the best value for money since the mid-range trim brings everything, and a bit more, for the segment. The base trim is equipped with a lot of driver-assistance features which also gets equipped in the SEL as well. The trim also brings in two other packages - Premium package and Convenience package - that add a lot of nice features as well, making the Elantra the best bid for the segment.

Pros

Track and Autocross Capabilities, Integrated Technology

Cons

Octane Learning was an awful feature from the start. I wish they would just let people put premium in and let it run all the way to 20psi., No vents for rear seat passengers.

Pricing and Features
9.0/10

"Despite the keen price, the SE version doesn't force buyers to pay extra for safety features." - KBB

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra is available in a total of 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, N-Line, and Limited. Pricing for the trims starts at $19,850 and goes up to $25,600 for the top trim. A destination fee of $1,025 is extra. There are no changes to the available standard features. Standard features on all trims include 15-inch alloy wheels, LED DRLs, cloth upholstery, air-conditioning, an 8-inch touchscreen, and four speakers.

The N-Line trim adds a more powerful 201 hp 1.6L engine with a six-speed gearbox. There are two optional Pacakges available, which are limited to the SEL trim. THe Convenience Package ($900) adds heated front seats with a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and adaptive cruise control. The Premium Pacakge ($2,100) builds on the Convenience Package with LED lights all-around, a sunroof, Bose premium audio system, and Hyundai Digital Key.

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

"An efficient, cheap-to-run commuter car isn't obliged to be a thrill machine at the same time." -KBB

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra comes equipped with Hyundai's 147 hp and 132 lb-ft of torque 2.0-liter MPI Atkinson Cycle engine for maximum efficiency. This engine is coupled to a CVT gearbox and comes with an FWD configuration. The N-Line model uses a 201 hp turbocharged 1.6L engine with either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed DCT gearbox with the same FWD setup. The 7-speed DCT is $1,100 extra.

The base engine is relaxed, and the CVT gearbox is optimized more for fuel efficiency than spirited driving. As a result, this helps with excellent city driving and maneuvring but limits the highway performance on the Elantra. The N-Line makes a world of a difference. Its powerful engine and the smooth gearbox options provide a very thrilling and engaging driving experience, while not eating too much into its efficiency.

`

As a city car, the Elantra is easy to handle and steer. The chassis is responsive, confidence-inspiring and there's always the safety net of an underpowered engine. The steering is well-weighted, with excellent feedback from the tires and the fancy suspension setup that directly rivals that on the Civic. The N-Line improves things with its sport-tuned suspension and offers a better grip with its performance tires. All in all, the Elantra's driving is predictable and composed.

The Civic makes the most power, whereas the Corolla is the least powerful car of the lot. In terms of torque output, the Corolla peak torque kicks in as early as 3,900 RPM, but it does not give it any benefit in terms of performance. All in all, the Honda Civic offers the most performance and driving character for what money the car demands.

The Honda Civic and the Kia Forte return the same mileage at 35 MPG combined. The Toyota Corolla on the other hand is the least efficient car with its combined mileage rating of 33 MPG. In terms of range, all four cars offer a similar range but the Forte benefits with its large 14-gallon tank that gives it a slight edge over the rivals.

Interior
8.0/10

"To match its dramatic exterior, the cabin of the Elantra looks appropriately futuristic." - Car and Driver

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra interior keeps up with its sporty and flashy exterior. With Hyundai’s new Jet-inspired design language, the dashboard and center console wrap around the driver while the passenger’s side takes a more plane and simpler approach. However, there's more to this than what meets the eye. The interior on the Elantra is lined with tons of hard plastic surfaces and components, and this takes way the overall appeal that the interior offers with its design.

Overall interior quality is decent, and the controls are robust and feel on par. Coming to seating and comfort, the Elantra is a spacious car on the inside. This combined with the well-cushioned and supportive front and second-row seats offer a very satisfying experience, making this car a great companion on long journeys. The adjustable front seat helps to accommodate all types of drivers, and the large windows and doors offer excellent amounts of outward visibility.

It offers the most headroom in the front, and is on par with the Civic for its 42.3 inches of front legroom. In the rear, the Forte has a spacious headroom on offer at 37.5 inches, whereas the Elantra again takes the first spot in terms of rear legroom which is 0.6 inches more than the Civic's. The Forte again offers the most cargo capacity at 15.3 cu-ft.

The base trims get an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment display, whereas the higher trims get a 10.25-inches digital instrument gauge with a 10.3-inches touchscreen infotainment screen. "The 2022 Elantra strikes a different pose." - KBB

The 2022 Hyundai Elantra’s new design is unapologetically sporty, youthful, and flamboyant, which Hyundai proudly calls “Sensuous Sportiness”. Design-wise the 2022 Hyundai Elantra sees a whole new revolution, with the triangle-themed design language running right from the front grille to the rear bumper. The triangle-shaped massive gloss black front grille along with the aggressive-looking triangular arched headlamps makes the Elantra look a few notches above its segment and almost puts it in the race with the Audi’s and Mercedes.

Come to the side of the Elantra and Hyundai's obsession with the triangular shape continues, as it gets an almost polarizing looking triangular carvings on the front and the rear doors which beautifully merges with the aggressive sloping roof giving the Elantra a fast-back kind of look. The rear bumper is also done with some great taste as it merges beautifully with Hyundai's Parametric design philosophy it is implementing with its latest models. Dimensionally, the Elantra sees no changes.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Honda Civic

The 2022 Honda Civic is the direct rival to the Elantra. Both the Elantra and the Civic are compact family-oriented cars, and are very similar in many ways. Both the Elantra and the Civic come with a relaxed drive quality, with predictable driving dynamics, top-class fuel economies, and a comfortable and tech-rich interior. The Elantra has more engine options, and also a slightly rich safety feature system. The Civic, however, stands out with its more powerful engine, appealing interior, and better quality. Therefore despite its higher pricing, the Civic is the better option.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Toyota Corolla

The 2022 Toyota Corolla also ticks all the right boxes as a compact sedan. Both these cars are priced similarly, deliver high fuel economies, are extremely predictable and easy to drive, with a segment par cabin and trunk space. The infotainment units in both these cars are highly user-friendly and extremely advanced. The Elantra and the Corolla also do a great job in terms of ownership costs and reliability. However, the Elantra's engine is more powerful, and the driving experience is a lot more engaging. As a result, the Elantra is the better car of the two.

2022 Hyundai Elantra vs 2022 Kia Forte

The 2022 Kia Forte and the 2022 Hyundai Elantra are corporate cousins. Both these cars employ the same engine and gearbox and hence have high fuel economies. The Forte gets a new look for 2022, whereas the Elantra continues unchanged. Both the Elantra and the Forte have a similarly specced interior, with a long list of standard features and safety features. Both the cars use an intuitive infotainment system. However, Kia does not offer anything similar to the Elantra N or the hybrid. Between these two, the choice comes down to brand preference and which car appeals more.

Final Verdict

Priced at $19,850, the 2022 Hyundai Elantra is an excellent choice as a compact sedan with its decent performance, relaxed driving dynamics, high fuel economy, spacious interiors, and a wide array of safety systems. The Elantra also offers advanced technological features that are easy to use and practical, comes with modern looks, and has a strong value for money proposition. The only thing that works against the Elantra is the underpowered base engine, but all in all, the Elantra works well as an all-rounder.
