The Elantra SE, Value Edition, and Limited models are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 147 horsepower. It runs effortlessly and remains calm at higher speeds. Its power is adequate to move this Hyundai sedan around the city with ease and maintain triple-digit speeds out on the highways. In any case, you'll have to keep working the motor for climbing steep slopes or execute high-speed maneuvers.
On the other hand, the Elantra Eco features a 138-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Elantra Sport packs a punchier 201-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. The Eco model feels somewhat more tractable than its minuscule horsepower rating would recommend. The 6-speed automatic unit does a great job and provides seamless shifts.

The Mazda Mazda3 makes the most power and torque figures here while the Kia Forte shares its power figures with the Elantra. The Toyota Corolla is the least powerful option here along with a rather disappointing CVT transmission.
2017 Hyundai Elantra Acceleration
It's hard to believe, but the Elantra is one heavy sedan that just refuses to accelerate effortlessly. The standard 2.0-liter engine is disappointing with some of the slowest 0-60 mph times in the class, while the Eco has good midrange power and feels a bit quicker. The 1.6-liter motor onboard the Sport trim is definitely quicker but all that extra performance comes at the cost of a reduced fuel economy.

When compared to Mazda3 Sport, none of the competitors even touch the 0-60 mph time of just 7.1 seconds. The Hyundai Elantra is quicker than Kia's Forte and the Toyota Corolla (SE), but Mazda3 Sport proves to be the quickest.
2017 Hyundai Elantra ride & handling
The ride quality of the 2017 Elantra is quite sorted and compliant as per the segment standards and the sedan handles quite decently as well. The big let-down is the steering which requires to be worked upon more than usual to properly handle the car.
The drive modes do help in managing the driving experience decently and the Sport mode tries to offer you the best out of the sedan. The Sport trim, however, offers s completely different experience with its bigger wheels, better brakes, and sportier suspension tuning to justify the "Sport" badging and the substantial bump in the performance figures.
2017 Hyundai Elantra Braking
The Elantra SE comes equipped with a decent set of brakes and they do perform with consistency. The brake pedal travel is well contained and you'll feel confident while braking from higher speeds. The sedan does shed speed rather quickly and comes to a halt at an impressive 116 ft.

Coming to the competitors, both the Mazda3 and the Kia Forte has similar braking performance along with similar brake sizes as well. The Toyota Corolla has a slightly better braking performance as compared to the Mazda3 and the Forte yet none of the competitors match up to the Elanttra's braking prowess.
