About 2017 Hyundai Elantra

4.1

Overall Rating

In every way possible, the Elantra is a pretty looking compact sedan with a roof outlined as a coupe. Although there have been dual opinions in the market, the Elantra has been a very reliable vehicle under whatever disguise it pulls off.

In case you're in the market for a conservative car and the 2017 Hyundai Elantra isn't on your rundown, it ought to be. The Elantra offers great fuel efficiency, sound safety appraisals, upscale features, and a radiant 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty.

Hyundai has a crisp product line, growing sales, and immeasurably enhanced quality notoriety. The new Hyundai Elantra is a decent car and has been upgraded for 2017, including new looks and stylish materials. The Elantra rides unobtrusively and offers better-than-average performance.

For regular usage and occasional highway runs, the SE Value Edition would be a perfect option since it offers all the optional features of the SE as standard. For the performance seeker out there, the Sport trim would suffice.

My review on my 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT Sedan, named Elle (Ellie).

Pros

  • Roomy interior and supportive, comfortable seats
  • Plenty of user-friendly tech features
  • Available advanced safety technologies
  • Quiet cabin and compliant ride quality
  • New Eco model

Cons

  • Abundance of black plastic trim inside
  • Average acceleration
  • Not-so-impressive performance

In every way possible, the Elantra is a pretty looking compact sedan with a roof outlined as a coupe. Although there have been dual opinions in the market, the Elantra has been a very reliable vehicle under whatever disguise it pulls off.

Pricing and Features
7.0/10

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is a four-door compact sedan offered in four main trim levels: SE, Eco, Limited, and Sport. Pricing for the 2017 Elantra sedan starts at just $17,150 for an SE model with a six-speed manual transmission ($18,150 for an automatic). The Elantra Value Edition starts at $20,250 and incorporates the majority of the SE trim's optional features. The fuel-sipping Elantra Eco ($20,650) and zippy Elantra Sport ($21,650) are next, followed by the upscale Elantra Limited ($22,350).

Engine and Performance
7.0/10

The Elantra SE, Value Edition, and Limited models are powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 147 horsepower. It runs effortlessly and remains calm at higher speeds. Its power is adequate to move this Hyundai sedan around the city with ease and maintain triple-digit speeds out on the highways. In any case, you'll have to keep working the motor for climbing steep slopes or execute high-speed maneuvers.

On the other hand, the Elantra Eco features a 138-horsepower 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Elantra Sport packs a punchier 201-horsepower 1.6-liter engine. The Eco model feels somewhat more tractable than its minuscule horsepower rating would recommend. The 6-speed automatic unit does a great job and provides seamless shifts.

It's hard to believe, but the Elantra is one heavy sedan that just refuses to accelerate effortlessly. The standard 2.0-liter engine is disappointing with some of the slowest 0-60 mph times in the class, while the Eco has good midrange power and feels a bit quicker. The 1.6-liter motor onboard the Sport trim is definitely quicker but all that extra performance comes at the cost of a reduced fuel economy.

When compared to Mazda3 Sport, none of the competitors even touch the 0-60 mph time of just 7.1 seconds. The Hyundai Elantra is quicker than Kia's Forte and the Toyota Corolla (SE), but Mazda3 Sport proves to be the quickest.

2017 Hyundai Elantra ride & handling

The ride quality of the 2017 Elantra is quite sorted and compliant as per the segment standards and the sedan handles quite decently as well. The big let-down is the steering which requires to be worked upon more than usual to properly handle the car.

The drive modes do help in managing the driving experience decently and the Sport mode tries to offer you the best out of the sedan. The Sport trim, however, offers s completely different experience with its bigger wheels, better brakes, and sportier suspension tuning to justify the "Sport" badging and the substantial bump in the performance figures.

2017 Hyundai Elantra Braking

The Elantra SE comes equipped with a decent set of brakes and they do perform with consistency. The brake pedal travel is well contained and you'll feel confident while braking from higher speeds. The sedan does shed speed rather quickly and comes to a halt at an impressive 116 ft.

Coming to the competitors, both the Mazda3 and the Kia Forte has similar braking performance along with similar brake sizes as well. The Toyota Corolla has a slightly better braking performance as compared to the Mazda3 and the Forte yet none of the competitors match up to the Elanttra's braking prowess.

Fuel Economy
9.1/10

What the Elantra sacrifices in power, it gains in the fuel economy. With a refined heart that encompasses a smooth gearbox and a front-wheel drive, the 2017 Elantra ensures that it travels a longer distance at the minimum expense of fuel. Numerically, the sedan does 29 miles to a gallon under city lights, while it can cruise with up to 38 MPG on the open country roads. Considering an amalgamation of both these conditions, 33 miles to a gallon is what the sedan offers in terms of combined fuel economy.

Certainly, there is tough competition in this segment but Elantra SE manages to get itself tagged as the most fuel-efficient car in the crowd. Following the Hyundai up close are the Kia Forte, the Mazda 3, and the Toyota Corolla by offering almost identical fuel economy figures.

Interior
8.4/10

The Elantra's interior is definitely its USP. It's well made, appealing, and spacious. Also, all the controls are ergonomically placed, and getting in and out is a breeze. The gauges are splendid and straightforward too, and are hence anything but difficult to peruse straightaway. The door openings are sizable, so it's anything but difficult to get in and out of the Elantra for both front and rear passengers.

Talking about the seats, one of the reasons why the Elantra is peaceful is its well-cushioned and supportive seats. Only the front row is bucketed to ensure a comfortable driving position for the driver but is still a lot more convenient than most of the other manufacturers that offer bucket seats. A spec-wise classification will show you that the Sport trim will be a relatively rough ride than the others thanks to the alteration in seat cushioning and a stiffer suspension.

While most of the trims dress up the seats with fabric upholstery, the top two trims feature a leather appointment with a power-adjustable driver’s seat. Even ventilation and heating functions can be opted for through the top trim. However, irrespective of the presence of these plush amenities, the seats inside the Elantra can be thought of as adequately pleasing and agreeable.

2017 Hyundai Elantra Infotainment

The Elantra offers a substantial number of tech features, and the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto systems effectively integrate your cell phone into the vehicle's infotainment system. The entire thing is user-friendly, and there are various knobs and buttons that aid this whole experience.

The infotainment features are:

  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • 7-inch touch screen with navigation
  • Hyundai's Clari-Fi music restoration technology
  • Eight-speaker Infinity audio system
  • USB port
  • Satellite radio capability
  • Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity
  • Blue Link telematics system

2017 Hyundai Elantra Cargo Capacity

What small passenger cars offer is great practicality, and being a sedan there is no doubt the Elantra will please you in this respect. A big trunk, plenty of small-item storage spaces in the cabin, and a decent room in the back for child safety seats make the Elantra very utilitarian. Although, for a sedan, a 14.4 cu.-ft. of space may sound a little small, but the competition will let you understand that it is just the way things work.

Access to the trunk is great, the lift-over stature is low and the 14.4 cubic feet of capacity is close to the highest point of its class. Split-folding rear seats give you an added adaptability; however, you won't pull anything too huge in light of the sedan's body style.

Exterior
8.1/10

Although the Elantra sedan is not as tall or long as its other competitors like Toyota Corolla (SE), it is the widest car in the segment. On the lighter side of things the Hyundai has a lighter body and looks catchy on the outside. Hyundai's fluidic design language works quite well with the sedan and the big front grille attracts quite a bit of attention at the first glimpse.

When compared to the competition the Hyundai offers the lowest ground clearance tied with the Kia Forte although in practice you won't take any of these cars for off-roading adventures. Some of the key exterior features in the 2017 Hyundai Elantra are:

  • A wider, deeper grille
  • Boomerang-shaped LED running lights
  • Vertical door cuts
  • Rear roofline capped by LED taillights
  • LED daytime running lights
  • A trio of LED taillights per side
  • 16-inch wheels
  • Heated side mirrors

Safety
9.3/10

The 2017 Hyundai Elantra comes standard with minimal advanced safety features, however, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera are all optional beginning with base models. The sedan also received some decent safety ratings from both the NHTSA and the IIHS to prove its safety stats within the segment.

Some of its features include:

  • Rear Door Child Safety Locks
  • Daytime Running Lights
  • Child Seat Anchors
  • Emergency Braking Assist
  • Adaptive Headlights
  • Engine Immobilizer
  • Remote Anti-Theft Alarm System
  • Turn Signal Mirrors
  • 2 Front Headrests
  • Tire Pressure Monitoring
  • Blind Spot Warning Accident Avoidance System

Competition
9.0/10

2017 Hyundai Elantra vs 2017 Mazda Mazda3 Sport

The Mazda 3 delivers well-balanced handling and enjoyable driving dynamics across its entire range. While the Mazda3 is very fuel-efficient, it's not quite as frugal as the Elantra SE. You won't find features like Apple CarPlay or Android Auto in the Mazda3, which are optional even in base-level Elantras. The Mazda3 offers lots of advanced safety and driver assistance features. As with the Elantra, however, you'll have to reach high into the trim levels to gain the full suite

2017 Hyundai Elantra vs 2017 Kia Forte (S)

The Kia Forte is around $1150 costlier than its opponent despite the fact that both cars have the same engine displacement, power, and torque production. Elantra SE is quicker than Forte S by 0.6 seconds and has the best braking stats, whereas Forte S remains at the base. Both cars have almost equal fuel efficiency and exterior dimensions. Hyundai Elantra provides more interior and safety features (you might have to pay more for them) than Kia Forte S.

2017 Hyundai Elantra vs 2017 Toyota Corolla (SE)

The Elantra and Toyota Corolla are similar cars that provide generous and comfortable interior space Both cars earn great safety ratings. The Corolla doesn't feel as energetic to drive as the Elantra though, and with a starting price of $18,500, it costs more than the standard Elantra. The Corolla also doesn't offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto functionality; two helpful systems that mesh smartphone controls into the car's infotainment.

Toyota does have one major trump card, however. Every 2017 Corolla is equipped with Toyota Safety Sense, which includes forward-collision warnings, automatic emergency braking, and lane departure alerts as standard. That's unheard of in the compact car class and it provides excellent value for money.

Final Verdict

The 2017 Elantra offers a decent overall package if you consider its based trim but as you move up along the trim levels, you'll get more than what you pay for and the sedan truly impresses with its fuel economy and stylish design. There are some downsides to this sedan as well such as its average handling and unimpressive performance from the base motor. Overall, when compared with its immediate rivals, it does pose as a better option though.
