Overall Rating
The 2020 Subaru BRZ has been launched in the United States and receives no major changes from the outgoing 2019 BRZ apart from the addition of tS trim. The 2020 Subaru BRZ comes with the same 2L Boxer-4 naturally aspirated motor producing 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque and comes mated to a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission with the RWD drivetrain layout. This motor is also capable of helping the 2020 BRZ reach 0-60 MPH and quarter-mile in 6.3 seconds and 14.7 seconds, respectively.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ has been launched in the United States for a base MSRP of $28,845 and remains identical to the outgoing 2019 BRZ apart from the arrival of a specially tuned tS Coupe trim. Coming in with the same 2L Boxer-4 naturally aspirated motor putting out 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque mated to a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission, the 2020 Subaru BRZ takes forward the ethos of the earlier iterations of the BRZ's.
With a single Limited trim option, the 2020 Subaru BRZ offers a whole lot of interior, infotainment, and safety features as standard for a subcompact coupe. With the fierce competition from the likes of the 2020 Toyota 86, 2020 Nissan 370Z, and 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, can the 2020 BRZ come out as the best of the subcompact coupe segment? We will find out in this in-depth review of the 2020 Subaru BRZ.Â
Since the 2020 Subaru BRZ comes with a single Limited trim, that is the only option you have got. However, this trim comes filled to the brim with many features like an 8-speaker audio system, dual-zone automatic climate control air conditioning, heated front seats, 17-inch alloy wheels, and many more as standard. In comparison, the 2020 Toyota 86, which is also based on the 2020 BRZ, also comes with a similar features list. However, the 2020 Camaro takes the cake for offering the most number of features for the segment.

We will find out in this in-depth review of the 2020 Subaru BRZ.Â
The 2020 Subaru BRZ comes in a single Limited trim for a base MSRP of $28,845. The 2020 BRZ remains unchanged from the outgoing 2019 moniker in terms of interior, exterior, and safety features. The 2020 BRZ comes with an 8-speaker audio system, StarLink infotainment system with navigation support, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, 17-inch alloy wheels, heated and leather-wrapped seats, and all the basic safety features like ESC, ABD with EBD, traction control, airbags, tire pressure monitoring system, and many more.
The new tS model brings in better performance upgrades along with a sportier interior. Otherwise, both the BRZ models use the same 2.0-liter powerplant under the hood mated to a rear-wheel-drive setup. For those who couldn’t get their hands on the limited-edition tS variant, introduced as part of the 2018 model year, Subaru offers a $1,195 Performance Package that grants the base Limited model similarly improved handling. That package includes Brembo performance brakes, a stiffer Sachs suspension setup, and stickier tires, besides other STI upgrades. The 2020 BRZ also gets many optional features like a Kicker subwoofer, STI wheels, and an automatic transmission.

"While every version of the BRZ encourages aggressive driving thanks to its terrific balance and high-fidelity steering, the optional Performance package makes it even better."-Caranddriver.com
The 2.0-Liter naturally-aspirated Boxer-4 engine that sits under the hood of 2020 Subaru BRZ comes mated to a 6-speed manual transmission and churns out 205 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. This motor offers variable valve timing and a dual active valve control system along with electronic throttle control. All of this helps the 2020 BRZ to offer immediate throttle response without any delays unlike in the case of turbocharged motors.
Subaru provides two transmission options, both with six gears. The 6-speed automatic is more convenient in the city traffic conditions, whereas the manual offers better control and driving feel. Going for the automatic also reduces the power from the 2.0-liter powerplant to 200 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. This is a torque converter automatic transmission with manual mode and paddle shifters. The 2020 BRZ is also offered in RWD disguise only.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ takes 6.3 seconds to accelerate from 0-60 MPH. The quarter-mile comes in around 14.7 seconds and the 2020 BRZ could reach a top speed of 143 MPH. The 2020 Toyota 86 uses the same 2.0-liter Boxer-4 motor present in the 2020 BRZ. However, it is slower than the BRZ when it comes to outright acceleration, as can be seen from a 0-60 MPH and a quarter-mile time of 6.4 seconds and 14.8 seconds. However, both the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2020 Nissan 370Z came out with the best 0-60 MPH time of 5.2 seconds and 5 seconds, respectively.

Though the 2020 Subaru BRZ turned out to be one of the slowest subcompact coupes of the segment, it offers the best braking performance of the lot, coming to a complete stop in just 120 feet from 60-0 MPH. The handling and driving dynamics on offer are also quite excellent due to its well-calibrated setup, offering minimal body roll and understeer. The ride quality and high-speed stability are impeccable too.
For all its sports coupe expertise, the 2020 Subaru BRZ can return a combined EPA-rated mileage of 24 MPG. The 2020 BRZ also offers 21 MPG in the city and 29 MPG on the highway. However, if you opt for the 2020 BRZ with the 6-speed automatic transmission, you would get better gas mileage of 24 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway, with a combined rating of 27 MPG.

With a fuel tank capacity of 13.2 gallons, the 2020 Subaru BRZ offers a combined range of 317 miles, with a city and highway range of 277 miles and 383 miles. This turned out to be one of the lowest of the segment due to both the 2020 Nissan 370Z and the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro coming out with a bigger 19-gallon fuel tank.
Both 2020 Chevrolet Camaro and 2020 Nissan 370Z offer a lower combined gas mileage of 20 MPG and 23 MPG, respectively. However, both the 2020 Subaru BRZ and the 2020 Toyota 86 offered a combined gas mileage of 24 MPG.

Toyota Reportedly Joining Forces With Subaru On Developing A WRX Rivalling Hatchback
"The Subaru isn't going to win any interior design awards, but with plenty of space and most every control at your fingertips, the BRZ is a comfortable companion."-Edmunds.com
The 2020 Subaru BRZ comes with a full-black interior that looks quite sporty and appealing. It is also ergonomically perfect and hence everything falls in where it should be. We also loved the contrastive red stitching and silver accents in the dashboard, which helps in uplifting the interior even further. The 2020 BRZ also gets all the necessary interior features like a dual-zone automatic climate control system, heated front seats, leather and Alcantara upholstery, and StarLink infotainment system.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ is not the most spacious offering of the subcompact coupe segment due to the lower headroom and legroom in comparison to the front seat space offered by the 2020 Nissan 370Z and the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro. When it comes to the rear seat space, the 2020 Subaru BRZ and the 2020 Toyota 86 turned out to be mediocre as well. The cargo capacity of 6.9 cubic feet offered by the 2020 BRZ is quite similar to the rivals. However, the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro offers the best cargo space of 9.1 cubic feet.

The infotainment duties of the 2020 Subaru BRZ are handled by the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. This StarLink infotainment system also gets many other features like SiriusXM radio support, Bluetooth connectivity, and steering-mounted audio control. The audio is handled by an 8-speaker audio system, which managed to offer a decent audio experience with punchy bass and clear high-frequency audio. A Kicker subwoofer is offered as an option too.
Some of the other interior and infotainment features on offer with the 2020 Subaru BRZ are mentioned below:
"The lightweight rear-drive coupe—which shares much with the Toyota 86—is not only fun to drive but also fairly practical."-Caranddriver.com
The 2020 Subaru BRZ retains the design of the outgoing 2019 BRZ with the same LED headlights and low grille accentuating its aggressive appearance. The 2020 Subaru BRZ coupe's rear silhouette features LED taillights, a rear diffuser, and a spoiler, bringing out the sporty look. The ride comes with 17-inch wheels with an aluminum-alloy finish as standard. The sportier 2020 Subaru BRZ tS variant rides on bigger 18-inch STI aluminum alloy wheels which definitely add a lot more sporty appeal to the moniker.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ tS variant comes with a few subtle differences to the exterior like stickier summer tires wrapped in the bigger 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels along with a restyled front bumper and an adjustable rear spoiler. LED headlights, LED taillights, and body-colored side mirrors come as standard for both variants too.

The 2020 Subaru BRZ has a wheelbase of 101.2 inches. It is also one of the lightest in the segment, coming in with a curb weight of 2,798 lbs. All of its rivals in the segment are very close in dimensions and weight too, except for the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, which offers the highest width, length, and curb weight of 74.7-inches, 188.3-inches, and 3,374 lbs, respectively.
2022 Subaru Outback Wilderness Edition Seen Testing In Production Guise
The 2020 Subaru BRZ scored a near-perfect score in the crash-test conducted by the IIHS, receiving the highest rating of "Good" in most categories. However, it wasn't considered as the top safety pick by the coveted crash testing organization. In the NHTSA crash test, the 2020 Subaru BRZ received a decent 4-star rating in the frontal crash test and a 5-star rating in the rollover crash test.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ also gets all the basic safety features like airbags, ABS with driveline traction control, electronic stability control, side-impact beams, backup camera, tire pressure monitoring system, etc. However, it misses out on all the advanced safety and driver-assistance features, which are offered by most of its competitors like the 2020 Chevrolet Camaro and the 2020 Nissan 370Z, at least as an optional extra.
Subaru Reveals The Most Powerful Version Of The WRX STI For Travis Pastrana’s New Gymkhana Video
The Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 were developed jointly and hence they are identical twins but with a few subtle differences. Both the examples share a similar powertrain and underpinnings. The 2020 Toyota 86 is less expensive but lacks some of the interior features of the 2020 Subaru BRZ, especially when it comes to the infotainment front. While both cars handle pretty much the same, a keen driver would notice the extra weight of the BRZ makes the 2020 Toyota 86 gain an edge around corners. Both are quite reliable and dependable and offer impressive gas mileage too.
With a bigger engine that shells out better performance for delivering a thrilling drive, the 2020 Nissan 370Z has an upper hand when it comes to the performance front in comparison to the 2020 Subaru BRZ. The 370Z is also slightly more spacious than the 2020 BRZ. However, the 2020 Subaru BRZ offers better gas mileage and interior features. It also gets a much superior infotainment system in comparison to the archaic unit on offer with the Nissan.
The 2020 BRZ offers sleek looks and a sporty driving experience while the Camaro is all about brute force. In fact, you can get a 2020 Camaro with a V6 and a V8 just above the price range of a 2020 Subaru BRZ. In terms of interiors, the Camaro offers better features including a modern infotainment system. Both the cars have cramped rear seats, yet the Chevy offers a superior trunk capacity too. Though the 2020 Camaro is not as driver-focussed due to the extra weight it carries coupled with a softer suspension setup on offer, it is still one of the best options for the segment.
The 2020 Subaru BRZ still managed to be one of the best subcompact coupes in the segment that is rivaled by the likes of the 2020 Nissan 370Z and the mighty 2020 Chevrolet Camaro, both of which are quite an excellent offering, to begin with. Though the 2020 BRZ turned out to be slightly underpowered in comparison to the rivals, which lead to its lower 0-60 MPH and quarter-mile times, the 2020 Subaru BRZ came out with the best in class handling and braking performance. It also turned out to be the most fuel-efficient too. Hence if you want a reliable and fun to drive daily driver, the 2020 Subaru BRZ should be definitely considered.
