A faulty side curtain airbag inflator motor has resulted in a voluntary recall of 212,373 RAM pickup trucks. The RAM 1500, RAM 2500, & RAM 3500 pickup trucks manufactured in the 2015-2020 period are included in the recall. The RAM 1500 pickup which was a part of the current generation & started manufacturing in 2019 is excluded from the list.
The problem has been caused by a faulty manufacturing process which resulted in the inflator motor being affected by moisture leading to a malfunction. As acclaimed by Stelantis in the official statement, the reason is stated as “Contaminated by Moisture”. There was also a recall by GM over the same issue earlier this year. The recall was caused by the same reason, which was due to the same inflator motor.
In the GM Recall, over 400,000 Chevrolet Silverado & GMC Sierra pickup trucks were recalled to get the side curtain airbag inflator motor replaced. As stated by GM, the faulty inflator can be triggered causing the side curtain airbag to deploy & causing a blast of debris inside the cabin. However, it was also stated that the system has resulted in a blast in only a single event & no injuries were caused.
