Overall Rating
Providing premium vehicles that are as efficient and powerful as its German competitors is what Buick is really good at. The same is true with the 2013 Buick Enclave which undercuts the Audi Q7 and Lincoln MKT in terms of pricing while providing the same level of performance, mileage, interior comfort, and spacing. It is available in a single V6 engine option and provides great overall performance.
Buick is a brand that prides itself in building premium and luxurious vehicles over Chevrolet, its corporate cousin, and it also does not go all out so as to not eat into Cadillac’s share. The Enclave is one such full-size family crossover offering from Buick that undercuts the three-row SUVs from more premium brands and yet does not compromise much in terms of comfort and luxury.
Buick has considerably refreshed the Enclave for the 2013 model year with all the mechanicals staying the same for most parts as the changes are mostly focused on exterior and interior styling and the feature list. The prices start at $39,340 for the base trim, and the Buick Enclave competes against the heavyweight Audi Q7 and the Ford counterpart, the Lincoln MKT.
Considering the fact that one is looking for a premium crossover and budget is not a constraint, the Leather trim with AWD would be our recommendation for the sheer amount of exquisite interior materials and the additional features that enhance the overall experience considerably over the base trim.

Buick offers the Enclave for the 2013 model year in three trims with an option to choose between the FWD and AWD powertrains. There is only a single-engine available with the Enclave but it comes feature-loaded right from the base Convenience trim and features premium goodies such as three-zone climate control, leather steering wheel, powered driver seat, automatic headlamps, and much more.

The 2013 Buick Enclave is powered by a 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine that produces a healthy 288 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. The power is sent to the front wheels as standard through a 6-speed automatic transmission, and there is also an option to opt for the optional all-wheel-drive drivetrain for an added premium of just a couple of thousand dollars.
The performance from this powertrain isn’t really exciting as it takes 8.5 seconds to reach 60 mph from standstill, whereas the quarter-mile takes 16.7 seconds to be covered. The towing capacity though is pretty good at 4,500 lbs.

The Audi Q7 is the most expensive car here, and although it lacks power, it has the highest towing capacity rating, and it also produces a tremendous amount of torque output from its supercharged engine and hence is the fastest in the quarter-mile run. The Lincoln MKT is the quickest to 60 mph but lacks towing credentials despite producing the highest amount of power.
The Buick Enclave is powered by a large naturally aspirated V6 which isn’t really known for its frugality, and that is evident through its fuel-efficiency ratings. The EPA rates the 2013 Enclave for 17 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highways, while the combined fuel economy is rated at 19 mpg. The 22-gallon gas tank on offer does a decent job, and it aids in driving the Enclave for long journeys before halting at a gas station.

The Lincoln MKT is substantially more efficient than the other two, while the Audi even with its supercharging technology has the lowest fuel efficiency ratings. The Q7 features the largest fuel tank which is way larger than what others offer and hence has a really long driving range. The small fuel tank on offer in the Lincoln MKT adversely affects the driving range.
Similar to the brand philosophy, the interior of the Buick Enclave sits right in between a Chevrolet and a Cadillac, in terms of materials and build quality. The dashboard of the SUV now is covered in a thick padded leather trim with double stitching, also the leather-clad door panels and armrests all together just enhance the overall feel of the cabin.Â
There is plenty of room for all passengers no matter where they are seated. Even the third row can actually fit in adults to a certain but long rides would still be uncomfortable with the knees up seating position. There is also plenty of luggage space which measures up to a whopping 23.3 cu-ft behind the third-row seats while the maximum cargo capacity is 115.9 cu-ft, enough to fit in half of your home in there.

All three cars offer abundant space for all the passengers, and there is very little difference between them, except for the third row of Audi Q7 which has considerably less legroom. The Audi and the Lincoln both have a similar cargo capacity and both of which cannot compete with the sheer space that the Enclave has to offer. Major interior features include-
The 2013 Enclave features Buick’s IntelliLink interface which consists of a large 6.5-inch touchscreen display that features menus and icons that can be rearranged as per your preference. The layout is clean and has an intuitive UI but the response times could have been better.
There is a 10-speaker Bose audio system on offer alongside all the basic levels of connectivity that we have come to expect in today’s premium cars. Few key features include-
The Buick Enclave is a large SUV, and it makes an appearance whenever it arrives anywhere. Although the styling looks a bit like a crossover probably due to the drooping hood and the standard wheels, the design of which we are not a fan of, and that looks a tad smaller in front of the huge dimensions of the car. There is ample chrome tastefully used, which gives it a premium appeal but does not make it look too blingy.

The Lincoln MKT is the longest vehicle here, but it is the Buick that offers the longest wheelbase and is also the widest and tallest SUV in this comparison. Despite its large dimensions, the Lincoln is the lightest of them all, with the Buick being only marginally heavier. The Audi Q7 is the heaviest by around 500 lbs and also offers the best ground clearance, whereas the Lincoln MKT is the closest to the ground. Few standout exterior features of the SUV are-
With great luxury, comfort, and technology, Buick also offers a peace of mind experience in terms of the safety aspect of the Enclave. The NHTSA has rated it with a perfect overall 5-stars rating, whereas the IIHS too has awarded it with their ‘Top Safety Pick’ award. The exhaustive list of safety features compliments the sound engineering techniques used in the manufacturing of the Enclave, and a highlight of those features are listed below.
The Buick Enclave is a perfectly placed full-sized SUV that offers a well-balanced performance in terms of comfort, luxury, performance, and technology. Add to that the great safety rating and features and the reliability that comes along with a Chevrolet brand, it makes a strong statement against the much pricier competitors. If you are on the lookout for a full-size premium SUV, then this Buick should definitely be on your watchlist alongside the German counterparts.
