Overall Rating
2017 Buick Enclave SUV makes up for a solid preference for potential premium SUV buyers. Even though low on fuel economy, the 7-seater provides an airy and comfortable experience on the road.
One of the imperishable vehicles in the American market, the grey-haired lineup of the Buick Enclave is back in 2017 with new challenges to those who deem to dominate the SUV segment. In a time where crossover SUVs are the hype, Enclave stubbornly adheres to the conventional SUV protocols and yet gaining the woos of its valued customers.
Speaking of competition, the Acura MDX, Kia Sorento, and the Nissan Murano are the prime competitors for the Buick Enclave this year. While the Enclave prides itself on being equipped with a bigger engine, these folks are nonetheless stubborn against accepting defeat. At the same time, the 2017 Enclave leads the SUV battle with spacious seating, remarkable cargo capacity, and an excellent towing capacity.

Buick has quintessentially laid out the trim chart of the Enclave. However, going on a budget will not require you to drop the Enclave from the list as the Essence trim would suffice with plenty of features it has to offer.

The big, bulky 2017 Enclave is not just a mammoth on the outside, but it also incorporates an equally sizable powerhouse. The 3.6L naturally aspirated V6 engine is decent at the most and generates 288 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission which takes power to the rear wheels via a Hotchkiss propeller. There is an optional AWD system on offer as well.
On paper, the power and torque figures might look decent but on road, it disappoints straight away. The motor feels stressed out if pushed hard and takes its own sweet time to pick up the pace. Within the city limits, the vehicle feels alright but out on the highways is where it starts to fade out in the performance aspect owing to its heft. The transmission does a decent job though with its seamless and smooth gear shifts.

Both the Acura MDX and Kia Sorento deliver 290 horsepower but the latter falls short in terms of torque in front of the MDX. The Nissan Murano is the least powerful SUV on the lot and is the sole competitor here with a CVT unit.
As mentioned before, the Enclave suffers from a sub-par performance despite housing a beefy 3.6-liter V6 underneath. The SUV takes a rather long 7.9 seconds to complete the 0-60mph run which is among the longest time taken by any of the SUVs in the segment.
Flooring it further witnesses no alteration in performance as the SUV brushes past the quarter-mile in 16.3 seconds, positioning itself just second to the last Kia Sorento. Not to mention a large amount of carbon footprint the vehicle leaves behind.

The Acura MDX is the quickest of them all, requiring mere 6.2 seconds to complete the 0-60mph dash. Although it may appear that the Enclave does better in a quarter-mile as opposed to the Sorento, it is more appropriate to regard the Sorento’s performance as decent regarding its power figures. The Nissan Murano covers a quarter-mile in 16 seconds, while Acura MDX continues to build upon its lead with a 14.7 second of quarter-mile time.
While front-wheel-drive comes standard with the 2017 Buick Enclave, an option for upgrading to an all-wheel-drive is available. The Buick Enclave offers decent handling but its suspensions are more tuned towards ride quality rather than focusing on handling. It results in a serene and composed ride over most of the uneven tarmacs but while taking corners at considerable speeds body roll is quite evident and pronounced.
The optional AWD system offers improved traction to a great extent which is quite helpful for those residing in snowy areas or places prone to getting snowfall during the winters. Maneuvering the SUV in tight parking spaces might be a challenge owing to its size and hindered rear visibility.
Considering the hefty 4359 lbs. of curb weight, the 2017 Buick Enclave has a commendable braking performance. The SUV flaunts its biggest set of brakes in the competition. The front and rear brake for the 2017 Buick Enclave measures 12.8 and 13 inches, respectively. The braking system along with other active brake assistance features ensures the vehicle is in complete control of the driver.

The Nissan Murano has the best braking performance despite being not-so-lightweight, closely followed by the Acura MDX. The Kia Sorento has the most disappointing braking performance considering its curb weight and the size of its brakes.
The Enclave can tow a considerable amount of weight thanks to its big engine and a strong gearbox. With 4,500 lbs. of towing capacity, the Enclave can pull enough to join the leagues of big, mighty SUVs like the GMC Yukon. Of course, it won’t since excelling in a subject does not let you account for the entire syllabus.

The most disappointing one is the Nissan Murano with its measly 1,499 lbs of towing capacity despite having a V6 under the hood. The Acura MDX and the Kia Sorento have similar towing prowess but none of the rivals are able to catch up with the Buick Enclave.

Like in the performance department, the 2017 Enclave disappoints in the fuel economy aspect as well. The ride delivers 15 mpg in cities, 22 mpg on highways, and 18 mpg overall. The figures are way below the average mark and the segment standards.

The Murano gets an edge over all the rivals here in the fuel economy department owing to its least performance numbers. The Acura MDX has the most impressive fuel economy numbers considering its performance figures, closely followed by the Kia Sorento.
This is the part where we get to hail the Enclave. Like its major 3-row rivals, the 2017 Buick Enclave is capable of accommodating up to 8 occupants on a trot. The seats are extremely well cushioned and offer superior levels of comfort and bolstering for support as well.
The front row gets bucket seats along with power adjustments that come standard along with the lineup. But, what’s noticeable is that none of the rivals have offered a heating function on the seats as a standard, unlike the Enclave. Perhaps Buick knows that the key to attracting more customers is more features!Â

Unlike the Acura MDX and the Kia Sorento, the Nissan Murano accommodates only 5 passengers. The Nissan Murano also has the least spacious seating in the segment. The Acura MDX and the Kia Sorento, on the contrary, give decent competition to the 2017 Buick Enclave SUV.Â
With 41 and 41.2 inches of headroom and legroom, respectively, in the front, Enclave tops the front headroom chart. The Acura MDX and Kia Sorento offer the most lucrative front headroom options with 41.4 and 44.1 inches, respectively. Nonetheless, the Buick Enclave emerges out as a winner in the overall cabin space and comfort aspect.

The Kia Sorento has the least cargo capacity with all the seats upright followed by the Acura MDX. However, folding all the seats in the Acura MDX frees up as much as 90 cu-ft of space which is close to the Enclave's space. The Nissan Murano has the least space with the rear seats folded.
The 2017 incarnation of the Buick Enclave flaunts a butch and beefy exterior dimensions and design language. It has a length, width, the height of 204.3, 78.8, and 69.6 inches of length, width, and height, respectively. All of these are the maximum among its class rivals.
The front fascia of the SUV looks decent with the big, chrome-finished front grilles nicely flanked by the projector headlamp units. There are tasteful chrome inserts all around the vehicle that gives a premium feel to the overall design of the vehicle.

On the outside, the ride flaunts:
The 2017 incarnation of the Buick Enclave flaunts a super safety scorecard along with its almost bullet-proof reliability aspect as well. The SUV earned excellent IIHS ratings and NHTSA ratings. The NHTSA rated the SUV with a "4-star" rating for rollover and "5-star" for all other testing parameters. There are a number of great standard safety and security features available with the 2017 Buick Enclave. The ride comes with an excellent airbag system as well as the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system. Other important features include the Teen Driver and Rear Seat Reminder.
Some of the key safety features in the 2017 Buick Enclave are:
One of the major competitors to the 2017 Buick Enclave SUV is the Acura MDX. The ride packs a 3.5L 6-cylinder engine, capable of delivering 290 hp of power and 267 lb.-ft. of torque. For gear-shifting, the Acura MDX makes use of a 9-speed automatic transmission unit.
The Acura MDX is the strongest performer in the league with a 0-60 MPH acceleration time of 6.2 seconds. The ride covers a quarter-mile in just 14.7 seconds. Supporting a curb weight of 4001 lbs., the ride comes to a full halt in just 123 feet when decelerated continuously from 60 MPH.
Pricing options for the Kia Sorento start from $44,100. Hence, it is the ride with the most expensive opening bid among its class rivals. Sorento flaunts a 3.3L DOHC GDI V6 engine, able to produce 290 hp of power and 252 lb.-ft. of torque.
Though the ride accelerates to 60 MPH in 7.3 seconds, it covers a quarter-mile in just 16.8 seconds. The Kia Sorento, however, has weak braking prowess. The ride, even though having a curb weight of 3968 lbs., comes to a complete halt at 132 feet when decelerated continuously from 60 MPH.
The Nissan Murano is a rather "weak" contender to the Buick Enclave with its lackluster towing capacity and lacking cargo capacity as well. A 3.5L DOHC 24-valve V6 engine is mated to a CVT unit in Nissan Murano which is known for its notorious droning at higher speeds. The ride has 260 hp of power and 240 lb.-ft. of torque on offer. The Nissan Murano has a starting price of $41,120. The SUV accelerates to 60 MPH in 7.5 seconds. However, it covers a quarter-mile in 16 seconds.
The Nissan Murano offers a combined fuel economy of 24 mpg, one of the best in the class. The SUV also has a ground clearance and wheelbase of 6.9 and 111.2 inches, respectively. Unlike its class rivals, the Murano is capable of accommodating a total of 5 persons only.
The 2017 Buick Enclave makes up for a solid preference for potential premium SUV buyers. Even though low on fuel economy, the 7-seater provides an airy cabin and a comfortable experience on the road. Thanks to its 7.7 inches of ground clearance, the ride can take on some casual adventure trips as well. The Enclave offers a plush cabin with a stylish exterior design. Adding a smooth-shifting transmission and a healthy list safety feature list to that, simply makes the 2017 Buick Enclave SUV lucrative enough to go for.
