Overall Rating
The 2014 Honda Pilot is a part of the second generation of the model and has received some makeover from its previous generation vehicle.
The 2014 Honda Pilot is a part of the second generation of the model and is available for sale unchanged this year. The specs remain the same and the SUV sold in 4 different configurations which include the base LX, EX, EX-L, and Touring. The 3.5L 280 hp V6 engine is capable of towing a maximum of 4,500 lbs and can do 0-60 in 8.2 seconds.
The interior of the 2014 Pilot is the same as well from last year which is a disappointment as it does not feel as premium as the Accord. That said, the interior is very functional and has lesser buttons with the inclusion of an automatic climate control system.
At a starting price of $29,670, the Pilot competes against the likes of Ford Explorer, Kia Sorento, and Nissan Pathfinder.
The EX-L trim makes the most value for money offering among the lineup. It comes with some excellent comfort and convenience features such as leather upholstery, voice activated navigation system, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system.

The Honda Pilot is available in a total of four trims starting from the LX and offers two drivetrain layouts: FWD and AWD. The price of the FWD LX trim starts at $29,670 and offers some generous features such as automatic headlights and tri-zone automatic climate controls. As you climb up the trim levels the feature list increases gradually while the top-end Touring trim with AWD is a bit overpriced according to the additional features it offers over the EX-L trim.

The EX-L trim makes the most value for money offering among the lineup. It comes with some excellent comfort and convenience features such as leather upholstery, voice activated navigation system, and an optional rear-seat entertainment system.
The 2014 Honda Pilot is powered by a standard 3.5liter V6 gasoline motor. It pushes out a decent 280 horsepower and 262lb-ft of torque. While driving, the motor feels punchy and the power delivery is linear, adequate for a family mover. Don’t expect it to pick-up the pace briskly since it is a hefty vehicle and under full-load, driving it in a relaxed manner smoothes out everything.
The refinement levels are of Honda’s standard and the motor remains relaxed across the gears. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that takes care of all the power on tap and puts it on the tarmac efficiently.

The torque output of the Pilot is the highest among the rivals on the list while both the Ford Explorer and the Kia Sorento offer 10 more horsepower than the Pilot. The Pathfinder is the least powerful on the list although not by a huge margin.
Family movers and SUVs were never really synonymous with fuel efficiency and the Honda Pilot doesn’t impress either. Under general driving conditions, the SUV is good for 19mpg while driving around within the city, and 27mpg while out on the highways. The combined rating stands at 22mpg. The vehicle is fitted with a sizable 19.5gallons gas tank which is adequate to deliver excellent overall driving range.

The Nissan Pathfinder compensates its lower power figures with a commendable fuel efficiency that is the highest among the rivals on the list. The Ford Explorer can be said as the least fuel efficient SUV on the list although by a slight margin only. The Kia Sorento offers a slightly lower mpg rating than the Pilot.
The interior of the Honda Pilot truly impresses with its spacious and airy feeling. The seats are quite comfortable and given the excellent ride quality, the vehicle offers a commendable comfort while on the roads. The cabin has been laid out thoughtfully and easily accessible instrumentation.
The buttons and the switches feel robust and high-quality while the leather upholstery in the higher trims covers up the down-market feeling of the base trims. The legroom, headroom, and shoulder room are more than adequate with the third-row seats being actually quite comfortable for a couple of adults over a long trip.

All the rivals offer more or less near-identical interior dimensions while the Explorer comes with a generous boot capacity. With all the seats folded, the Pilot offers the best cargo capacity of 46.8 cu-ft while the Sorento disappoints in this aspect.
The infotainment system of the Pilot is simple yet quite useful. It comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display showing a variety of information including some important ones such as fuel economy, stereo setting, and back-up camera display.
The system comes integrated with some basic and handy features and also gets some optional features as well.
Some standard features include:
From the exterior, the Honda Pilot looks less rugged and more soft and composed. The front end looks smart with a chrome front grille and rectangle-shaped headlamps. The design is simple and nothing too flashy, ideal for a humble family mover.
The side-profile is rather sleek with sculpted-out wheel arches that might look a bit out of place to some. The rear-end also features an understated design with medium sized tail lights flanking the either sides of the cargo-door.

The Ford Explorer is the heaviest vehicle on the lot with the maximum ground clearance on offer. It is also slightly wider than the Pilot while the Sorento is the slimmest of the lot. The Nissan Pathfinder might look more bulkier than the Pilot but actually sits lower to the ground hindering its practicality.
Honda is known to make vehicles offering great safety and strong build quality. The Honda Pilot also follows on the same suite and comes with an excellent build quality. The NHTSA rated it 4-star out of five while the IIHS rated it as “Good”. It did perform well in the safety ratings but its competitors offer better scores.
The SUV also disappoints a bit when it comes to offering safety features and misses out on some advanced features such as driver assistance features and forward collision warning system.
Some basic safety features offered by the SUV are:
The Honda Pilot is an excellent three-row affordable SUV that is ideal for a family person as well as someone who is looking for an SUV to carry quite a bit of cargo. It offers oodles of space on the inside and comes with a comfortable ride-quality as well. It sure scores a bit low on the safety front in front of its competitors but is an excellent value for money vehicle otherwise.
