About 2018 Honda Pilot

3.9

Overall Rating

The Honda Pilot has been one of the top midsize SUVs on sale for years now and is even a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. With a roomy cabin, plenty of cargo storage, and an impressively quick engine and transmission, the 2018 Pilot starts at an MSRP of $30,900. That excluding a $995 destination charge, which brings the total price to $31,895. Apart from its various accolades, the Honda Pilot also offers a maximum towing capacity of 3500 pounds.

The midsize SUV market is filled with people looking for a comfortable ride for their big families, and none might impress these prospective buyers quite like the 2018 Honda Pilot. It has been one of the top midsize SUVs on sale for years now and is even a Top Safety Pick by the IIHS. However, for the 2018 model year, there are no changes or updates at all offered by Honda. This means that the old infotainment touchscreen will continue to be its major drawback. Still, with a roomy cabin, plenty of cargo storage, and an impressively quick engine and transmission, the 2018 Pilot starts at an MSRP of $30,900.

That excluding a $995 destination charge, which brings the total price to $31,895. But competitors of the Honda Pilot, like the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander, have a lot to offer and even make up for some of Pilot's flaws. Still, the Pilot is one of the most well-rounded midsize SUVs you can pick for your family. Thanks to the fact that it comes with all the bells and whistles to give its competition a run for their money.

Although the Pilot provides enough features in the base trim to satisfy most buyers, the EX-L trim seems like a worthwhile upgrade. Not only does it replace the tiny 5-inch display screen for a wider 9-inch one, but it also adds other features like a leather-trimmed interior, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, a sunroof, a power tailgate, heated front seats, and one-touch sliding second-row seats. Apart from that, the EX-L provides an optional 6-speed manual transmission, which is more fun to drive.

Awesome Versatility

Pros

I love the large number of cup holders in the vehicle from front to back., I love the independent suspension.

Cons

The black leather does tend to get super hot during the summer., It could have a more rugged flooring.

I love the fact that I can safely transport my children back and forth for their needs as well as also decide that we are going to go on a drive thru the mountains and know that they will also be safe then as well. It has allowed us to enjoy many different environments without having to go and rent a different vehicle.

2018 Honda Pilot Review

Pros

  • Smooth and Planted Ride
  • Excellent Cargo Space
  • Satisfying 3rd Row
  • Versatile Interiors
  • Uncompromised Safety

Cons

  • Daunting Infotainment Controls
  • Backdated Styling

"With ample power and respectable handling, the Pilot is among the athletes in the three-row SUV segment." - Edmunds

The standard powertrain of the 2018 Honda Pilot comprises a 280 hp 3.5-liter V6 engine. It comes mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission in LX, EX, and EX-L trims and 9-speed automatic transmission in the Touring and Elite trims. The 6-speed transmission is smooth but the 9-speed transmission tends to flicker and jitter at times. It does, however, come with paddle shifters to make you take control of the gearshifts.

Now, the Pilot's V6 isn't the most powerful but at 262 hp is the most torquey. Hence, this setup is quite extraordinary in times when a sudden surge of power is required, given that it is tuned for a much-sophisticated ride. It propels this mid-size three-row SUV to a speed of 60 mph from zero in just 6.2 seconds, which is quite impressive for this class.

In comparison, the Ford Explorer's 290 hp V6 is the most powerful, but it is 1.5 seconds slower than the Pilot in a 0-60 mph sprint and 1.2 seconds slower in a quarter-mile race. At the same time, it also costs almost $2,000 more than the Pilot. Then, expecting light and agile handling from a 3-row SUV is a bit too much to ask, but Pilot is surprisingly nimble than many of its competitors.

Swapping between lanes is easy, and its stability control doesn't dampen the experience of an aggressive drive. Its steering wheel is quite precise and feels steady to hold. But it doesn't provide as much feedback as desirable. The braking matches its accelerating too. It is solid and firm with a predictable response from the pedal. For a vehicle of this size, the Pilot is the quickest to come to a stop in just 119 feet from a speed of 60 mph.

Fuel Economy
7.1/10

Many would expect the Honda Pilot to not perform so well in terms of fuel economy, given that its 280 hp V6 offers tremendous performance. However, that is not the case here. The fuel economy ratings of the Honda Pilot are above average for its class. It gets 19/27 mpg in city/highway with 6-speed manual transmission and FWD.

With the same drive type, it gets 20/27 mpg in city/highway when you pair it with the 9-speed automatic transmission. Opting for the available AWD would lower each of these stats by 1 mpg. Only rivals like Toyota Highlander and Nissan Pathfinder perform better than Pilot, but only when driving in the city.

The 2018 Pilot puts up impressive economy numbers on the highway, and the 19.5-gallon tank offers 527 miles of maximum range. The Explorer, on the other end, is nowhere near the rest. With a combined economy of 20 mpg, the 2018 Explorer would be a costlier choice in the long run, be it a city drive or an open road one.

Interior

"The third row is adult-friendly, though taller passengers may have to sit with their knees upright because of the low seating height." - Car.USNews.Com

The 2018 Honda Pilot is just as big and roomy inside as it looks from the outside. There are only three color options for the Pilot inside: beige, black, and grey. Overall, the design didn't change much from the previous year’s models. Coming to practicality, the Pilot is just as accommodating as the Odyssey. It can seat up to 8 people in its 3 rows, except for the Elite trim, which has captain's chairs in the second row, reducing seating capacity to 7.

The LX and EX get cloth upholstery, EX-L, and Touring gets leather, and the Elite gets perforated leather. The driver's seats are highly adjustable with 10-way power adjustability and 2-way lumbar support in all but the base trim. The base trim gets a 6-way manual adjusting driver's seat. The EX-L, Touring, and Elite trims get 3-way heated seats. Elite also gets 3 way ventilated seats. Overall the seats are roomy and comfortable as they provide good support and padding, which makes long rides a breeze.

It is also extremely easy to get to the third row; with the available one-touch second-row seats, the seats fold and slide forward to provide a passage to the third row. When you start up the Pilot with the standard push-button start, an 8-inch display screen will fire up in all models from the EX trim onwards. The base LX model gets a 5.0-inch unit. Each trim also gets a 4.2-inch multi-display screen in the instrument cluster.

The LX trim uses a 200 watt 7-speaker system, the EX and EX-L use 225 watts 7-speaker systems, and the Touring and Elite use a 540 watt 10-speaker sound system. In Touring and Elite trims, there is a rear entertainment unit that can play Blu-Ray discs. It is available as an option in the EX-L trim. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are also available as upgrades only. Some of the important features include-

  • Apple CarPlay
  • Android Auto
  • 200 Watt 7-Speaker Sound System

"Today's Honda Pilot has pleasant styling. It's no longer the glamourless box it was before its 2016 redesign." - TheCarConnection.Com

As you'd expect from a vehicle in this class, style is not a top priority. The Honda Pilot, too, is on the modest side of things. There is a basic trapezoidal grille in the front with three chrome lines running through it. The top chrome line extends and merges into the headlights, which are LED in Elite and halogens in the rest.

Below, there are separate turn signals and fog lamps in all trims but the base. When looked at from the side, the roomy size of the Pilot becomes more apparent. Its bold shoulder line is accentuated by minimalistic cuts and complemented by the gently sloping roof. The 2018 Honda Pilot's basic and simple design is reflected in the back as well.

The only eye-catching element is the LED taillights, which are standard in every trim. When it comes to dimensions, at 194.5 inches the Pilot is longer than the Toyota Highlander. But the bulkiest vehicles here are the Nissan Pathfinder and Ford Explorer. Both are over 198 inches in length, and the latter weighs in close to 4500 lbs.

Safety
9.3/10

Most cars in the midsize SUV segment do quite well in the safety ratings, and the 2018 Honda Pilot does even better than them. It gets 5 out of 5 stars overall in NHTSA crash tests. The IIHS, too, named the 2018 Honda Pilot as a Top Safety Pick. When equipped with the driver assistance tech, it earns a 'Superior' rating in frontal crash prevention. The headlights could use some work, though, as they earn their second-highest rating of 'Acceptable'. The base model doesn't have many safety features, having only a multi-angle rearview camera. But upper trims add features like:

  • Forward collision warning
  • Automatic emergency braking
  • Road departure mitigation system
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane keep assist
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Rear cross-traffic alert
  • Automatic high beams
  • Rain-sensing windshield wipers
  • Honda LaneWatch

2018 Honda Pilot vs 2018 Toyota Highlander

The Toyota Highlander is a couple of thousand dollars more expensive than the Honda Pilot. The Highlander provides more standard safety features like forwarding collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, lane-keep assist, and adaptive cruise control.

But that's as far as Highlander's advantage goes. The 2018 Honda Pilot offers a stronger engine with better fuel economy, a spacious cabin, and more cargo storage. All this and the reliability of Honda at a more affordable price make the 2018 Pilot a better choice.

2018 Honda Pilot vs 2018 Nissan Pathfinder

Honda Pilot and Nissan Pathfinder are two SUVs that don't focus much on off-road capabilities. Instead, these SUVs offer more features that are best suited for family duties. In many ways, these two vehicles appear to be virtually tied up in performance, but there are subtle differences that give the Pilot an edge.

The Pilot looks slightly roomier when looked at from the outside, but inside, it is closely matched to Pathfinder. The Nissan Pathfinder's interiors are simple and functional, while Pilot is a little sportier. The Pilot also has a safety edge. It has been named the Top Safety Pick by IIHS thanks to its many safety features, thus taking the upper hand between the two.

Final Verdict

The 2018 Honda Pilot is one of those vehicles that seem to check all the right boxes for a family SUV. It offers generous cabin space as well as rear cargo storage, it is comfortable and powerful, and it is a Top Safety Pick thanks to its long list of safety features. If you want a safe and luxurious ride for your large family, then keeping Honda Pilot on your watch list is highly recommended. But Pilot did not cover all grounds, and keeping some key rivals in your list is equally recommended too. The Toyota Highlander, for example, offers more standard safety features. Also, Pilot's infotainment system relies too much on touch controls, which is a problem when you wanna keep all your attention on the road. With that being said, the Honda Pilot is still one of the best family SUVs available in the market today.
