The rear cross-traffic monitor has now been made available from the 2019 Honda Pilot EX as well. Honda has also added an all-new Display Audio system which uses an 8-inch touchscreen. It too is standard from the Pilot EX onwards. These changes make the 2019 Honda Pilot EX a lot more budget-friendly than the outgoing Pilot EX model.
Which trim should you buy?
For most of the buyers, we would recommend the EX trim. It balances in-cabin luxury, safety features, and technology. For an increase of $2,880 over the base model, you will get a bigger infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto and conveniences like push-button start, electric folding second row. If you plan to use your Honda Pilot in the snow, equip it with the optional AWD system that comes with an intelligent traction management system.

The 2019 Honda Pilot is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine which is the same as the previous year's model. The engine generates an impressive 280 horsepower and 262 lb-ft. of torque. The engine is mated with a 6-speed automatic in the LX, EX, and EX-L trims. The higher trim levels, Touring and Elite, are equipped with a ZF supplied 9-speed automatic transmission. A lot of users had encountered numerous problems with this 9-speed automatic transmission.
For 2019, Honda claims to have recalibrated this unit. The 9-speed AT of the 2019 Pilot will start only in the second gear under light-to-moderate input from the driver in Drive mode. It is only when the driver selects Sports mode, and under heavy throttle, that the 9-speed unit will start in first gear. Honda says this will result in smoother launches from lower speeds. Still, big three-row SUV crossovers aren't exactly built for the thrill.

The 2019 Toyota highlander is the most powerful in this comparison with a maximum power output of 295 hp. The 2019 Ford Explorer with a maximum power output of 290 hp is just behind the Highlander. The Pilot and the Explorer are equipped with a V6 engine while the rest of the two gets a 4-cylinder engine.
2019 Honda Pilot 0-60 MPH Acceleration Performace
The 2019 Honda Pilot has the best 0-60 mph acceleration time in this comparison. It is able to sprint from 0-60 mph in just 6.2 seconds and the quarter-mile is reached in under 15 seconds. Both the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander beat the Pilot with over 290 hp of power output. Even then, both are still slower than the Pilot.
The 2019 Honda Pilot is not the most powerful, but even after that puts in great acceleration times on the board. The same is with the Subaru. The 2019 Subaru Ascent is the least powerful in this comparison, yet is much quicker than the Ford Explorer and Toyota Highlander with a 0-60 mph acceleration time of 6.9 seconds.

All the rivals offer a higher tow rating of 5,000 lbs as compared to its 3,500 lbs maximum towing capacity of Honda Pilot. When it comes to driving, the Honda Pilot is a bulky crossover but serves its purpose as a comfortable cruiser. So the steering is light, making the Pilot manageable in tight urban spaces. Its brake rotors are also well-calibrated to bring this three-row SUV to a complete stop in just 117 feet from a speed of 60 mph.
It's not often you hear a V6 turning out to be fuel-efficient as well. But surprisingly, the 3.5L V6 of the 2019 Honda Pilot manages to offer above-average fuel economy. The 2019 Honda Pilot returns a combined fuel economy of 22 mpg, which paired with the massive 19.5-gallon fuel tank translates to 429 miles of range in mixed driving conditions.
Considering the power available on tap, and the acceleration that comes with it, the 3.5-liter engine gets the best of both worlds - impressive performance and healthy gas mileage. The models equipped with the 9-speed AT, now have an improved idle-stop function as well which further improves fuel efficiency.

If we couple the 2019 Pilot with the available AWD setup, it still manages to return 18 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Looking at the competition, the 2019 Ford Explorer is less fuel-efficient with the FWD setup than the Honda Pilot AWD, returning 20 mpg combined. The newly-introduced 2019 Subaru Ascent delivers a segment-best 23 mpg combined fuel economy, the same as Toyota Highlander.
The 2019 Honda Pilot interior is one of the well-designed and highly customizable that we have seen in the SUV segment. It offers seating for up to eight people in total. The room in all the 3 rows is well distributed. Getting in and out is easy due to wide long doors, but is not the same case for the third row. However, beyond the EX trim level, a push of a button gets easy access to the third row. The second-row seats slide and make enough room for passengers to enter or exit.
The seats are well-bolstered and offer heated and ventilated seats at higher trim levels. The second row has a completely flat floor that helps a lot for longer journeys. The top Elite trim even comes with a 10.2-inch screen rear entertainment system and a panoramic roof. But the talk of the town is that the 2019 Honda Pilot now comes with a new 7-inch TFT instrument cluster.

All the SUVs can accommodate up to 8 passengers in total, except the 2019 Ford Explorer which can carry only 7 passengers. They have considerable spacing at the front two rows, while the 2019 Toyota Highlander interior lacks in terms of the third-row spacing it offers. Here is a list of the interior features that are available with the 2019 Honda pilot:
2019 Honda pilot Infotainment System
The 2019 Honda Pilot gets an all-new infotainment system. Its graphics have been tweaked a little, and there's also a new and customizable multi-information display that comes as a part of this 7-inch screen. For infotainment, the base LX trim is equipped with a basic 5.0-inch LCD screen. But from the EX trim onwards, you get an 8.0-inch touchscreen display that supports Android Auto and Apple Carplay as standard.
This updated unit is more responsive and offers bigger icons. The system offers snappy performance. The material used on this screen keeps it from smudges. Finally, Honda has offered a physical knob for volume control as well. Some of the other most notable infotainment features are mentioned below:
The mid-cycle update for the model year 2019 brings a more aggressive look for the Honda Pilot. The 2019 Honda Pilot has revised front and rear fascias. For starters, LED low-beam headlights are standard across the range. Then, the front now has a broader chrome grille with piano black inserts below. Even the new front bumper has larger and fully integrated fog lights.
The foglights have further been highlighted with a skidplate-like design at the bottom. The same design has been carried over to the all-new rear bumper as well. The taillights have been redesigned as well. They incorporate amber turn signals and LED backup lights. Finally, the entire design refresh is made whole by more ruggedly styled 18-inch and 20-inch wheel designs.

The 2019 Honda Pilot dimensions remain unchanged. At 4036 lbs., the Pilot is one of the lightest vehicles in this segment. The rivals such as the Toyota Highlander and Subaru Ascent have an edge over Honda here. Their respective ground clearance of 8 and 8.7 inches means they are a lot less like to scratch their underbelly while doing mild-offroading. Here is a list of the exterior features that are available with the 2019 Honda Pilot:
The Honda Sensing suite of driving aids is being offered as a standard feature on all models of the 2019 Honda Pilot. With this mid-cycle update, the 2019 Honda Pilot receives the safety award TOP SAFETY PICK+ from IIHS. The federal testing agency, NHTSA gives an overall 5-star rating as well. The key safety and driver-assist features that come as part of the 2019 Pilot include:
The 2019 Ford Explorer is equipped with a V6 engine that belts out 288 horsepower. It has a spacious cabin, mild off-roading capacity, and class-leading tow rating. Overall the Explorer provides great performance which is on par with the Honda Pilot.
The Honda Pilot, however, benefits from clever pricing and a decent spread of features across the trim levels. It also offers a higher fuel economy along with much quicker 0-60 MPH acceleration timing.
The newly introduced 2019 Subaru Ascent is powered by a four-cylinder boxer engine. The engine is mated with a CVT automatic transmission. But it is Ascent's standard AWD setup that makes it one of the most driver-oriented three-row SUVs available in the market.
It won't carve corners but even for its size, it feels smaller and nimble to drive. The turbocharged engine really gets this vehicle moving. And when it comes to standard features, Ascent wins the game by an unfair margin.
2019 Toyota Highlander Vs 2019 Honda Pilot
The 2019 Toyota Highlander is much more powerful than the Honda Pilot. Even if it is equipped with a smaller inline-4 cylinder engine, it gets generates 15 hp more than the Pilot. But even with this more power, the Honda Pilot is much quicker in the 0-60 mph acceleration.
The Toyota Highlander is quite spacious and provides great comfort to all the passengers. But the Highlander is quite smaller in overall dimensions, and thus has a smaller footprint on road. Thus the Highlander is much easier to maneuver.
The new Honda Pilot might not be the jack of all trades but there are certain traits in which it simply excels. It gets a V6 engine that is powerful and also extremely fuel-efficient. It also has AWD as an option, making it fairly capable of tackling inclement weather. The cabin is well-built with enough space for storage as well. Now with the 2019 update, the Honda Pilot has gotten a lot more advanced and feature-rich as well. There's no denying that the 2019 Honda Pilot, starting at $31,450, is an extremely value-for-money buy in the mid-size three-row SUV segment.
