  • 8 passenger capacity
  • Large luggage space
  • Great fuel economy

Cons

  • Slow braking
  • Sluggish and lacking infotainment in base trim
  • 9-speed automatic transmission seems a bit slow

Engine and Performance
8.3/10

The Honda Pilot LX is powered with a 3.5L V6 engine which produces decent power and torque counts in the segment. The naturally aspirated V-6 makes 280 horsepower and 262 foot-pounds of torque, both of which are rather responsive, and highly competitive in the segment.

An optional AWD system is offered, though it is only recommended in colder conditions. The basic transmission offered is a 6-speed automatic, though trims above the EX-L, the Touring, and the Elite get an even better and refined 9-speed automatic unit.

When compared to the other SUVs in the segment, all three competitors also make use of a V6 engine setup. The GMC Acadia Denali manages the highest power and torque output in the segment of 310hp and 271lb.-ft respectively, but it is considerably higher priced than the Pilot. On the other hand, the Hyundai Santa Fe and Dodge Durango have a higher power output but only diminutively. In terms of powertrain, the Durango is the only SUV that is a rear-wheel-drive variant and is channeled to an 8-speed automatic transmission unit.

2017 Honda Pilot Acceleration

The throttle and the 3.5L V-6 engine seem ready to surge forth and accelerate. Most notable is how high the engine can rev, which makes it particularly capable of downshifting. Even in the quarter-mile run, its performance is captivating and bestows on the driver a sense of exhilaration and excitement.

While the GMC Acadia Denali manages to sprint to the 60mph mark in 6.3 seconds, it picks up speed in the long stretch to emerge victorious in the quarter-mile run clocking 15 seconds flat. 2017 Honda Pilot SUV Ride and Handling

The Honda Pilot offers an above-average riding experience in the mid-size SUV segment. The throttle response is great, and the 6-speed gearbox gels well with the 3.5L V-6. the 9-speed automatic transmission though seems a bit more on the sluggish side, though it is sure to have even better efficiency figures. Rear seats are comfortable and spacious enough which offers a decent level of comfort although the quality of the interiors and the seats are more pleasing in the upper trims with heated, adjustable seats. The steering seems highly precise, though it is a bit on the softer side.

Despite high curb weight, the car feels lighter than most of the competitors in the segment. The car has a brilliant set up at the rear axle, which makes it highly comfortable to ride, with a minimal amount of jostling around. The 2017 Pilot features decent off-road capability as well along with smooth acceleration and precise handling. The crossover excels in ride quality, convenience, and usability much more than most of its competitors.
