Overall Rating
The 2015 Honda Pilot carries forward the same V6 engine that provides decent power output. It is not the quickest in acceleration but provides decent fuel economy for a vehicle of this size
The 2015 Honda Pilot is a comfortable midsize SUV that offers comfortable seating in all three rows and ample cargo room. Backed by Honda's good reliability reputation, the Pilot ranks in the top 10 midsize SUVs. With an MSRP range from $29,870 - $41,620, the 2015 Pilot is the final model year before the full redesign. Although the driving dynamics have not really been the biggest strength of the Pilot, the high fuel efficiency and latest technology on offer make it a strong contender in the segment.
The Pilot has a comparatively weak engine and clumsy handling. The Pilot's interior is not as upscale as some of its rivals and there are a few advanced safety features. Though for the price, Honda Pilot is a good SUV, however, we recommend redesigned 2016 Pilot which has several active safety features like adaptive cruise control. For an intuitive infotainment system, you will need to buy a 2017 or later Pilot model. The Honda Pilot goes up against the Hyundai Santa Fe, Kia Sorento, and the Nissan Pathfinder with a starting price of $30,770 which is amongst the lowest in the segment.
We recommend going for the SE trim with either of the powertrain depending on personal usage as the SE trim offers a lot of features that are missing even on the EX-L trim and misses out on those that one might not really use, making it a value for money variant.

The Honda Pilot is offered in five trims this year with the addition of a new SE Special Edition trim that bridges the gap between the EX and EX-L trim. The top of the line Touring trim starts at well over $40,000 and offers premium features like a rear-seat entertainment set, front and rear parking sensors, premium audio system, and many more. On the other hand, even the base LX trim comes packed with triple-zone climate control, heated mirrors, and a long range of airbags for added safety.

The Honda Pilot is powered by the tried and tested 3.5-liter naturally aspirated V6 engine that powers the front wheels as standard and gets an option for a 4-wheel drive setup. The engine is rated to produce 250 horsepower and 253 lb-ft of torque while it is mated to a 5-speed automatic gearbox.
The lack of power and torque is evident in the acceleration figures as it takes 7.8 seconds to achieve 60 mph from a standstill and the quarter-mile is covered in 16.2 seconds. The maximum towing capacity is one of the best in the segment at 4,500 lbs and adds a lot of versatility to the crossover.

The Hyundai Santa Fe and the Kia Sorento both are corporate cousins and are mechanically similar, but the Kia Sorento is cheaper by a huge margin. It is also the fastest with the Santa Fe right at its tail. The Nissan Pathfinder and the Honda Pilot on the other hand are similarly priced but the Pilot is marginally quicker in terms of acceleration whereas the Pathfinder has a slightly better towing capacity.
The Honda Pilot has a decent fuel economy for its size and is rated for 18 mpg around the town and 25 mpg out on the highway, whereas the combined fuel efficiency is rated at 21 mpg. The large 21-gallon gas tank translates to a healthy over 500-mile highway cruising range which is one of the best in the segment.

Only the Nissan Pathfinder has a higher fuel efficiency rating whereas all others have similar fuel economies like that of the Honda Pilot. The Korean cousins have the shortest driving range in this comparison whereas the large fuel tank on the Honda aids it to achieve range on par with the more efficient Nissan.
The biggest setback for the Honda Pilot is the cheap and downmarket looking cabin. It is way below the quality of what Honda offers in the Accord sedan and feels in dire need of an upgrade. The cabin though is well designed with useful interior details and instrumentation.
Although the third row of seats offers a much better seating arrangement for adults, the front and the second-row seats are too low which causes taller passengers to be seated in a bit of knees-up position, making it uncomfortable on longer drives. The luggage carrying capacity though is one of the best in the segment with a maximum capacity of 18 cu-ft even with all its seats upright.

The Hyundai Santa Fe offers the best combination of space throughout its cabin for all its passengers, no matter where they sit. The cargo capacity is also pretty good and hence is the best option in this lineup. The Pathfinder is the most compact in terms of passenger capacity but it also offers enough cargo capacity.
Thankfully, the 8-inch infotainment system seen on the Honda Accord is carried on inside the Honda Pilot and although it can get a bit tedious to use, it offers crisp graphics and smooth flowing UI.
The automatic climate control interface helps reduce the otherwise cheap feeling and looking controls and knobs available on the Pilot. Audiophiles would like the 650W 10-speaker audio system offered in the 2015 Honda Pilot.
The exterior appearance also seems to be in need of an update as the current generation was launched all the way back in 2009 and seems outdated in today’s day and age. The boxy body style with square headlamps and upright rear tailgate, all seem to be the things of the past with more fluidic and aerodynamic designs coming forward with modern cars.
Although, the 2015 Pilot looks bold and aggressive and offers a commanding presence on the road.

Being the oldest crossover in this segment, the Honda Pilot is the heaviest in the segment despite being shorter than most rivals. The Nissan Pathfinder is the longest and features the longest wheelbase. The best ground clearance is offered by the Pilot with Pathfinder being on the other end of the spectrum, but the difference between the two is nominal, about just an inch.
The new Honda Pilot does lack a few of the latest safety features and driver assistance technology, but it still manages to fare well in the crash tests conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS.
It had a decent performance in the tests conducted by the IIHS whereas it did score an overall rating of 4-stars out of a possible 5-stars in the NHTSA’s crash tests. Most of the safety features are available as standard and a highlight of the available features is listed below.
Despite being an aging model, the Honda Pilot offers a lot of versatility and a value for money offering in a growing and competitive segment. The interiors might not be of the highest quality but it does offer a lot of functionality and features to make it stand on its own. With the efficient and smooth powertrain alongside the high resale value that Hondas hold in the market, Pilot makes a good statement for itself.
