About 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan

3.8

Overall Rating

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan carries forward the same 2.0-liter engine from the previous year and provides decent overall performance. It is not the quickest and also lacks in terms of fuel economy when compared to its competitors.

The current generation Volkswagen Tiguan has been soldiering on in the same avatar since its launch all the way back in 2009. The now-aging compact SUV still offers higher levels of refinement and build quality along with great performance which others in the segment still struggle with, even with regular updates.

With the new generation of the Volskwagen Tiguan almost around the corner, one might wonder about the practicality of buying an aging Tiguan, but Volkswagen has played its cards well as it has not only priced it aggressively but also provides great performance which is uncanny in this particular segment. The prices for the base 2016 Tiguan start at $25,755 and go all the way up to $37,285 for the top-spec all-wheel-drive variant.

Volkswagen offers many of the necessary features as standard and hence if budget is a concern, one can always opt for the base trim, but if there are no issues at the bank, the top trim is the one that your mind would eventually be set on.

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan Review

Pros

  • Firm and compliant suspension tune
  • Superior acceleration performance
  • High-quality interior and build quality
  • Refined interiors

Cons

  • Average interior space
  • Mediocre fuel economy
  • Lack of latest safety technology

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan carries forward the same 2.0-liter engine from the previous year and provides decent overall performance. It is not the quickest and also lacks in terms of fuel economy when compared to its competitors.

Overview

Pricing and Features
6.0/10

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in four different trims. The various Tiguan trim levels offer tons of equipment and features, most of which are standard, and all the trims have an option for either FWD or AWD drivetrain. The Tiguan R-Line trim also features steering-mounted paddle shifters, while there is a compelling Fender audio system on offer only on the top SEL trim. For utmost comfort and premium feel, one has to go for the top trim, which is a bummer. However, we're fairly satisfied with what the lower Tiguan S trim has to offer, which feels sufficient for comfortable and consistent daily commutes and occasional road trips.

We Recommend

Volkswagen offers many of the necessary features as standard, and therefore, if budget is a concern, one can always opt for the base trim, but if there are no issues at the bank, the top trim is the one that your mind would eventually be set on. However, we strongly recommended going for the Tiguan R-Line. While the R-Line might focus more on the SUV's sporty aspect, it comes with a fair bit of additional features that make it slightly more value for money than the base Tiguan.

Engine and Performance
8.4/10

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is powered by a 2.0 turbocharged Inline-4 engine that is good for 200 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic gearbox, which powers the front wheels as standard. Volkswagen offers an option for AWD for an added premium of $1975. The engine feels fairly potent, as the Tiguan manages to not only tow up to 2,200 lbs, but also provide brisk acceleration. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan sprints from 0 to 60 mph in a brisk 8.1 seconds, which is certainly not bad for a commuter SUV. Additionally, the Volkswagen Tiguan completes the quarter-mile run in a respectable 14.5 seconds

The engine feels fairly calm yet confident on highways, and is eager for action when you twitch the throttle further. During city commutes, the TSI engine feels refined and composed, and doesn't trouble you with rattles under low RPM bands. The gearbox is certainly impressive, keeping you in the right gear at the right time, regardless of driving conditions. You can push the Tiguan enthusiastically, and the gearbox will definitely step up its game and show you the results you're looking for. While the FWD Tiguan can be a little lazy around quicker turns, it works plentifully well for regular commutes, with no major concerns. The AWD undoubtedly feels a lot more capable, even managing a fair bit of off-the-tarmac action on certain occasions.

The Honda CR-V is the most expensive option in this segment and lacks the performance expected from it at this price point. It not only is the slowest SUV in our acceleration tests in the comparison but also has the lowest tugging power. The Mazda CX-5 is much cheaper than the Honda and performs marginally better than it. The Tiguan is the best all-round performer and offers a lot more capability than the other two SUVs in competition.

Fuel Economy
6.0/10

Unfortunately, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan is not as fuel-efficient as you'd like it to be. Unlike some SUVs that can offer a clever balance between performance and mileage, the 2016 Tiguan only manages the former. The compromise is clearly evident in terms of poor fuel economy. The Volkswagen Tiguan only manages to return 21 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway, while the combined fuel economy is rated at just 23 mpg as per the EPA. Therefore, despite featuring a large 16.9-gallon gas tank, the Tiguan can be driven for a maximum of just over 400 miles on a single tank of gas, before heading to the gas station.

Both the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 have identical fuel economy figures, but it is the Honda that offers a larger fuel tank and therefore boasts of a longer driving range. The Volkswagen Tiguan is clearly the less efficient SUV here. The Tiguan also has the largest fuel tank and yet has the shortest driving range, roughly 75 miles lower than what the competitors have on offer. We however reckon that the updated Volkswagen Tiguan will certainly have better fuel economy to offer, without having its competitive performance number compromised.

Interior
7.7/10

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan interior is nothing fancy or premium, being a rather affordable budget SUV.  There aren't any exquisite materials on offer, or luxury comfort functions, or tactile buttons for a better cabin feel. However, we must point out that the build quality is fantastic. Every fit and finish in the cabin is superior to the corresponding levels of the Tiguan's competitors. The rivals offer a bit more plush interiors but the high-quality materials and decent equipment list help the Tiguan keep up with them.

The firm and supportive seats offer a good commanding view of the road and there is enough headroom even for the tallest passengers. The rear seats are a bit tight for leg space, but the sliding and reclining rear seats add up even more functionality to the cabin. With the rear seats upright, the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan offers 23.8 cu-ft of luggage space whereas folding them down opens up 56.1 cu-ft of cargo capacity.

The Honda CR-V is the most spacious inside its cabin as it offers abundant legroom for all its occupants and there is loads of luggage room for all of its passengers. The Mazda CX-5 has a bit more passenger space with superior headroom and legroom but lacks in the luggage department. The Tiguan loses out here with the least amount of space for both the passengers and the cargo. However, some of the key interior features offered with the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan include:

  • 8-Way driver and front passenger seats with power lumbar support
  • Heated Front Bucket Seats
  • 40-20-40 Folding Split-Bench Rear Seat
  • Vienna Leather Seating Surfaces
  • Leather Steering Wheel
  • Dual Zone Front Automatic Air Conditioning
  • Memory Settings for driver seat and door mirrors

How is the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan’s infotainment system?

While the Tiguan's interior feels rather sparsely appointed, the infotainment system certainly doesn't disappoint. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system, featuring plenty of apps and settings to play with. There's also Volkswagen Car-Net-App, which helps you pair your phone with the Tiguan's infotainment. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan offers a compelling 8-speaker Fender premium sound system, which steps up the cabin's audio game significantly. The sound system also comes with an amplifier and a sub-woofer.

Volkswagen also offers a SiriusXM Radio with the Tiguan, further adding variety to your infotainment experience. There's also an impressive Navigation system on offer, which features turn-by-turn directions. The Tiguan also comes with Bluetooth Audio Streaming, which lets you play your favorite playlist on the go. Additionally, the Tiguan infotainment offers support such as USB and Aux compatibility. Some key infotainment features offered with the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan include:

  • The 6.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system
  • 8-speaker Fender Premium sound system with Subwoofer
  • VW Car-Net App-Connect smartphone integration
  • Guide and Inform enhanced navigation
  • SiriusXM satellite radio
  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • VW Car-Net Selective Service Internet Access

Exterior
7.5/10

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan still features a tall and boxy frame which has been a thing of the past now. With Volkswagen set to update it for the next 2017 model year, things are expected to brighten up a bit. However, the design still feels classy and elegant, with beautiful curves and folds adorning the exterior of the Tiguan. The front features a dynamic-looking fascia, with a bold grille and aggressive headlights. We love the amplified creases on the hood of the Tiguan, which hints at the SUV's sporty appeal. The side profile is very compact SUV-like, with boxy proportions and chunky transitions from one end to another.

Nonetheless, the tall and boxy structure helps in providing a commanding view of the road whereas the roof rails and the slightly flared wheel arches give a sense of ruggedness to the Tiguan. The design of the rear follows principles of the front, being sharp and elegant. The rear end also features a dual-exhaust setup, which further augments the Volkswagen Tiguan's sporty persona. The overall design is quite consistent with the present design language of the entire Volkswagen lineup, and one can easily recognize the Tiguan as a part of the German carmaker's 2016 lineup.

The Mazda CX-5 offers the longest wheelbase and the highest ground clearance which helps it provide more space on the inside and is better equipped to tackle the broken surfaces. The Tiguan is the most compact offering and is also the lightest one. The Honda CR-V is the longest and heaviest SUV in this comparison but lacks ground clearance and the extra inches in the wheelbase.

Safety
8.2/10

Considering its German origin and VW badge on its nose, the Tiguan is no slouch in terms of safety and it is evident in the crash test results conducted by the NHTSA and the IIHS. It doesn’t stand out as an exceptional performer but the 4-star safety rating from the NHTSA and the ‘Good’ and ‘Acceptable’ rating in most aspects of the tests conducted by the IIHS is something to show for in this aging SUV. Some key safety features offered with the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan include:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) And Driveline Traction Control
  • VW Car-Net Emergency SOS
  • Rear Assist
  • Back-Up Camera
  • 6 airbags
  • Low Tire Pressure Warning

Competition
6.0/10

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan vs Honda CR-V

The Volkswagen Tiguan offers a good balance between performance and practicality. However, there are certainly some areas where the Honda CR-V simply offers more value. The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan does not offer good fuel economy, while the Honda CR-V takes the lead in this regard. The CR-V's interior also feels better appointed than that of the Volkswagen, while both the SUV's infotainment facilities are at par.

One of the few places where the Volkswagen Tiguan takes the lead is in the performance department. The Tiguan offers a solid 200 horsepower to play with, while the CR-V's underwhelming performance numbers highlight its engine's lethargy. Additionally, both SUVs come with equal levels of reliability and safety. At the end of the day, the Honda CR-V would be equipped to serve your daily needs better.

2016 Volkswagen Tiguan vs Mazda CX-5

Both the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan and the Mazda CX-5 are capable SUVs, with a knack for going quick. While the Tiguan puts down more power to the tarmac, the CX-5 manages tight corners much better. At the end of the day, it comes down to whether you prefer flat-out power on straights or engaging in twisty back roads. The Mazda CX-5 offers a very cushy cabin, along with premium materials and impressive upgrades on offer.

On the other hand, the Volkswagen Tiguan comes with a modest offering in this regard, but offers better build quality and good technical equipment. The Mazda takes the lead in terms of fuel economy as well, while also offering more cargo space and slightly better utility than the Volkswagen. In the end, the Mazda CX-5 might seem like a better choice, but the expected revamp in the Tiguan's 2017 model year might be a game-changer.

Final Verdict

The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan may miss out on a lot of the aspects that car buyers prioritize nowadays but it yet offers a lot of positive attributes which include great performance, refinement, and great interior quality. With Volkswagen set to launch the next-generation Tiguan in a few months, buying the older one makes sense, especially when rivals offer so much more in almost all aspects. While competitors such as the Honda CR-V and the Mazda CX-5 offer immense value in places where the Volkswagen Tiguan lags behind, the German SUV manages to offer tight competition and still holds its relevance. We certainly are convinced with the overall Tiguan experience, and would recommend you consider it for your next purchase.
