Overall Rating
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan gets a makeover this year alongside some new goodies to its interiors. The steering wheel has been updated while there are more safety aids and more standard features. With an MSRP starting at $27,190 the 2022 Tiguan gets the third row of seats as an option on all four configurations - S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. It has been released across the country with the same specs as last year of 2L 184 hp turbo-4 engine that returns 26 MPG combined.
Ending all speculations, amidst the pandemic noose, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is finally getting a mid-cycle refresh with the redesigned exterior styling. Also new are the convenience and driver-assist technologies like adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist and VW's new Travel Assist semi-autonomous driving mode. Tiguan's more attractive features are its optional third row of seats and spacious interiors. the 2022 Tiguan compact crossover has no mechanical changes and has been released across the country.
The more streamlined trim levels get a new refreshed front end, simple tweaks to the interior, and some extra tech. The changes include a new steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls, while heated seats and the digital gauge cluster have now been made standard across the lineup. That said, the third row of seats still remains optional.
No character change though but the 2022 Tiguan starts at a price of $27,190 and competes against the likes of Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Mazda CX-5.
The mid-range SE trim with 4MOTION AWD is the one to go for with the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan.
At a price of $32,190, the 2022 Tiguan SE offers immense value with the practicality of lane keep assist, the semi-autonomous driving mode a powered liftgate, power driver seat, digital gauge cluster, and more premium leatherette upholstery. The choice of a $1,200 panoramic sunroof could be a good add-on for buyers, but we feel it ain't necessary.

Volkswagen revises the trim structure for the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, eliminating the SEL trim. The S is Tiguan's base model, followed by SE, SE R-Line Black, and the top-of-the-line SEL R-Line at the top with the prices ranging between $27,190 and $37,790 for the top trim with the standard AWD drivetrain.
The SE R-Line Black trim gets a blacked-out trim, 19-inch wheels, and sportier bodywork. Inside, the R-Line touch-control steering wheel is now standard, so is the 15-color ambient lighting which can be configured via the infotainment display. A panoramic sunroof is included as well which is optional on lower trims.
The range-topping Tiguan SEL R-Line gets 20-inch wheels and all of the SE R-Line Black's black trim becomes chrome. VW adds interior equipment like Fender Premium Audio, a heated steering wheel, power driver and passenger seats, real leather seats, ventilated seats, and more safety tech like park assist, area view, and Dynamic Road Sign Recognition.

Under the hood of the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan, a 2.0-liter turbo inline-4 remains the same as the 2021 model. Mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission, the engine makes 184 hp and 221 ft-lbs of torque. Though the 8-speed transmission is smooth in its operation, the engine doesn't feel as refined and energetic as its rivals.
As in 2021, the 2022 Tiguan 4Motion’s all-wheel-drive (AWD) system is an available option. The Tiguan 2022 model will also have four driver-selectable driving modes: On-Road, Snow, Off-Road, and Custom Off-Road. Within the On-Road mode are four additional settings that provide extra flexibility including Normal, Sport, Eco, and Custom.
Floor the pedal harder and the engine does struggle with building momentum in the initial rpm range. However, once it does and its strong mid-range kicks in, the Tiguan races from 0-60 MPH in 9.1 seconds and has a maximum towing capacity is 1,500 lbs. The quarter-mile is covered in around 17 seconds while the top speed is limited to 125 MPH.

Among the rivals, Tiguan offers athletic handling. The balanced suspension teams up well with its premium cabin reciprocating into a comfortable ride. Bumps are soaked in well with ease and the steering has enough responsiveness to make it as light on its feet as a small car. Even the braking application doesn't invite any nosedive or brake fade and the firm brake pedal feels easy to modulate.
While Tiguan's turbocharged engine produces acceptable power, it’s not especially fuel-efficient and hence the MPG figures for the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan remain unchanged with the EPA combined fuel economy rating of 26 MPG, 23 MPG in the city, and 30 MPG on the highways.
The 4Motion AWD drivetrain is rated for 22/29/25 MPG for city/highway/combined tests. The 15.3-gallon fuel tank capacity offers a decent range of around 400 miles combined with the FWD drivetrain, which drops by around 20 miles when opting for the AWD drivetrain.

Among its competition though, the 2022 Tiguan along with the Mazda CX-5 happens to be on the lower end of the fuel economy spectrum. The Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V though proudly state why they are the segment leaders. The Volkswagen Tiguan and the Mazda CX-5 both have the biggest fuel tank capacity but the lack of efficiency has granted them less overall traveling range.
The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan gets the most significant changes inside with the addition of Volkswagen's Digital Cockpit instrument cluster that includes a standard 8-inch display or an optional 10-inch unit. Carrying on with the trendy and modern cabin, the interior layout has a good built and soft surfaces on the dash and door-panels. However, for 2022, you do get an updated interface on the dashboard with a new infotainment screen which loses the side-volume knobs.
The higher models even replace the temperature knobs with touch-sensitive controls for new 2022 VW Tiguan. Interestingly, there's a new steering wheel as well which also gets touch-sensitive buttons. From the second trim and above, Tiguan adds the Climatronic Touch interface, which is a knob-less climate control that also controls the power tailgate. R-Line trims receive more premium features such as a leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Additional optional items include leather or leatherette seats, power driver and passenger seats, a Fender premium audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and 15-color ambient lighting. The seats though are comfortable with a good height and thick padding. Overall cabin space is also good and the Tiguan has ample headroom and legroom in the first and second row. However, the cramped third-row is better suited for kids. Even in terms of cargo space and practicality, the Tiguan offers a generous 37.6 cu-ft of cargo space.

In comparison, no other crossover offer optional third row seats which is available on the VW Tiguan 2022. Opting for 5 seats opens up 38.7-inch of legroom which brings in on par with its peers. The 2022 CR-V has the largest trunk and cabin space to offer. The CX-5 has better rear seat legroom while the RAV4 offer more luggage capacity.
The infotainment system though remains the same as on the existing 2021 model with a 6.5-inch touchscreen on the base and an 8.0-inch unit the higher models.
Since it is a familiar setup it should keep its promise of a sharp display alongside an easy menu and quick responses. Shoppers have options for VW's Car-Net which provides in-car WiFi on a subscription plan. Except for the base trim, the 2022 lineup gets the MIB3 infotainment system as standard along with wireless charging and wireless App-Connect for compatible smartphones and tablets.
Perhaps the most evident update on the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is on the outside and especially at the front. Though its overall shape and design look the same, it now borrows inspiration from several family members. The new aggressive front bumper and redesigned standard LED headlights remind of the new 2021 Golf GTI. The larger, wider, and lower front grille seem to be straight away picked from the Volkswagen Passat.
Even the L-shaped DRLs are new for 2022 No changes on the side or rear profile but the revised “Tiguan” chrome-badging below the VW logo at the back imitates the new Volkswagen Atlas and the 2021 Arteon. The larger and lower air-dams at the front and revised bumper at the back work together to help it with a sporty stance. As part of the midlife refresh, the 2022 Tiguan will also get new wheel designs alongside fresh paint color schemes.

Apart from the aforementioned changes, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan remains the same. Not essentially a bad thing though. While it does miss out on the robustness of the RAV4 or the youthfulness of the Mazda CX-5, it does have that understated elegance that can only be seen in European vehicles. Aesthetically, the Mazda CX-5 looks most striking on the streets.
Its revised front fascia for 2022 though, does make it look a lot sleeker and sporty which may bring in a better volume for Volkswagen. Though it will be available in short and long-wheelbase globally, America will only get the long-wheelbase version.
The Germans are known for their strong build quality vehicles, the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is no exception. The 2021 Model has received 5-stars in the NHTSA crash tests. The IIHS also bestowed it with a ‘Good’ rating in all aspects for the tests for the 2022 model year. Moreover, this SUV comes with many active safety features to avoid any crashes in the first place.
Comparex to the Volkswagen, the Honda CR-V offers more power and efficiency along with better overall cabin and cargo space. The CR-V is also better in terms of safety and reliability. Ride quality and comfort have no doubt been one of the forte of the Honda here. However, the new Tiguan brings in an elegant yet sleek styling along with its tried and tested handling manners. Even in terms of tech and features, the Volkswagen is better armed than the CR-V.
The 2022 CX-5 is far quicker than the Tiguan and is also more capable in terms of towing capacity. Both the 2022 Tiguan and Mazda are priced competitively and have almost identical MPG ratings. CX-5 offers more passenger space while the Tiguan is better suited for their luggage. The sportier styling and better reliability in the long run, make Mazda the preferred choice between the two.
Against Tiguan, the Toyota RAV-4 is not only more powerful and quicker but also more efficient. The Toyota here is more dynamic and rugged along with being more reliable. However, the Volkswagen Tiguan apart from its chiseled styling offers better comfort and feels more premium compared to the RAV-4. The Tiguan is also more spacious overall in terms of cargo and cabin space and also has a better suite of tech features.
If you are looking for a comfortable compact SUV, waiting for a few months until the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan gets released could be a sensible move. While staying true to its promises of comfort, tech, handling, and features, the 2022 Tiguan gets better styling and it has a better presence than its current model. That's something which the Tiguan has always been deprived of but finally gets it in its cart for 2022.
