The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is available in four trims - SE, SEL, SEL Plus, and Limited. The SE and the SEL trims are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine while the rest of the line-up gets a more potent turbocharged 1.6-liter engine doing the power duties. As standard, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata comes loaded with a long list of features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

The prices for the 2021 Hyundai Sonata starts at $23,600 for the base SE trim and go up to an MSRP of $33,850 for the top-of-the-line Limited trim. Apart from these standard trims, the company offers ample additional standalone options, packages, and accessories like floor mats, cargo nets and more,  that can be availed on the 2021 Sonata.

 Priced at an MSRP of $25,800, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata SEL is the trim to get. It comes with more comfort features in the interior over the base trim like power-adjustable seats, dual-zone automatic air conditioning with separate rear vents, and 17" alloy wheels. We also recommend adding the convenience package for $2,200 and this adds a 12.3-inch, Hyundai digital key, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and wireless device charging.

Under the hood, the 2021 Hyundai Sonata remains unchanged from the 2020 model and comes with two engine options. The SE & the SEL trims get a 2.5L inline-4 making 191hp and 181 lb-ft of torque. The SEL Plus and Limited trims get 1.6L turbocharged inline-4 making 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. An 8-speed transmission paired to both engines and comes with an FWD drive configuration.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata can complete a 0-60 mph sprint in 7.9 secs, which is the slowest of the competition. However, the 1.6 turbocharged engine sets a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds which is faster than the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord time of 7.6 seconds. The 2021 Sonata does the quarter-mile in 15.9 seconds and has a top speed of 130 mph.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata, with its base 2.5L I4 powertrain, gives 28 mpg in the city, 38 mpg on the highway, and a combined of 32 mpg. These figures are lesser than the Honda Accord and the Toyota Camry, giving a combined of 33 mpg and 34 mpg respectively.

The 1.6L turbocharged variant of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata gives 1 mpg lesser in all three criteria, a bit surprising for a smaller displacement engine, However, the mpg numbers will still be better than the Mazda 6. 

According to the engine also comes fuel tanks, the base 2.5L inline-4 gets a 14.8-gallon fuel tank. The 1.6L turbocharged engine comes with a much bigger 15.9-gallon fuel tank allowing it to have a marginally better range than the base engine.

The interiors of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata come with no changes. The base SE trim offers 6-way manually adjustable front row seats with cloth upholstery. The SEL trim ($25,800) adds an 8-power-adjustable driver seat and seat heating function along with premium cloth upholstery and dual-zone automatic front climate control with separate vents for the rear seats.

At $28,300, the SEL Plus trim comes with the same seats as the SEL trim but with dynamic suede inserts with leatherette upholstery. The $33,950 Limited trim comes with a power lumbar for the driver's seat and also offers leather upholstery. The 2021 Hyundai Sonata comes with a cargo space of 16 cu.ft. which is more than the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and the Toyota Camry.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata offers an 8-inch infotainment system which is present in the SE, SEL, and SEL Plus trims and runs on the latest Bluelink interface has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and USB ports as standard. The system also comes with a 6-speaker sound system.

The Limited trim ($33,950) comes fitted standard with a 10.25-inch touchscreen which adds on the base system with navigation from HERE, highway drive assists, and also SiriusXM satellite radio. This system also gets a 12-speaker bose premium audio system (SEL trim part of tech package - $2,700). There is an optional convenience package that adds a panoramic sunroof, 12.3-inch instrument cluster, wireless charging, and few more items.

The Sonata had already received a big overhaul in 2020 and that included a lot of changes to the exterior as well. The 2021 Hyundai Sonata, carries forward the same intriguing looks. The design of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata is undoubtedly bold, with a wide gaping grille out in the front, carrying forward the new design language-‘Sensuous Sportiness’ Hyundai has fixated upon.

The sneaky headlamps of the 2021 Hyundai Sonata look like chrome pieces when they are not in use and they stretch along the crease of the hood. The DRLs are certainly state-of-the-art and they complement the sloping hood and the angular grille pretty well. The SEL Plus trim gets some desirable 19-inch alloy wheels but the base 16-inch and 18-inch don’t look so bad themselves. The ‘C’ shaped tail lamps run along the trunk at the rear.

All the cars have similar lengths and wheelbases apart from the Accord which has a longer wheelbase that translates to more legroom in the rear row. Hyundai has the lowest curb weight which explains its excellent braking performance. The Sonata is one of the more distinct-looking sedans out on the streets today and exudes a lot of elegance.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata comes with an overall 5-star safety rating from the NHTSA, just like the 2020 model. The IIHS has given it high scores in its ratings as well and has been awarded 2021 Top Safety Pick in the midsize sedan category.

If safety is high on your priority then you should opt for the SEL trim ($25,300) onward as many features like the rear-exit warning system are there on the Sonata. Other notable features include frontal collision avoidance, remote parking via the smart key, blind-spot monitor, smart cruise control, and more.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Vs 2021 Honda Accord

The Honda Accord is exceptionally well put together, offers a poised ride, and has an effective and thoughtful cabin design. Even the two engine options are peppy in nature, it is hard to fault. Some however would like the more modern approach of the Sonata here especially with a better infotainment system and safety and driver aids.

The Mazda 6 has always been a charming car and this generation is no different. It sports excellent design as well as having powerful engines. The car is also more fun to drive until you pitch it against the Sonata N Line model. However, families might find the Sonata to be a better bang for their buck.

2021 Hyundai Sonata Vs 2021 Toyota Camry

The 2021 Toyota Camry did not get the start Toyota would have wanted when it was launched in 2018, Toyota was clever to keep updating it and in 2021, it is a much-improved car and flaunts more features than it has ever had. The cabin inside is spacious and the ride inside is buttoned down. Want something sportier, there is a strong V6 up for grabs too. Between the two, Camry makes for a better choice.

The 2021 Hyundai Sonata is not the best midsize affordable sedan but comes with a good set of features like the optional turbocharged engine with a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds by making 180hp. The interior is simple and comes with a lot of cargo space and a good infotainment system and a lot of safety features. But, you would not go wrong with getting a Honda Accord either.
