Ford has halted the production and shipping of the F-150 Lightning as they have found a potential battery issue in the high-voltage battery pack and are on their way to resolve it as soon as possible. Although, there hasn’t been any kind of field incidents regarding this. The sale and delivery of the already shipped units haven’t been affected by this order.
Ford Halts F-150 Lightning Production Regarding A Potential Battery Issue

Just after Ford’s announcement of its new in-house battery manufacturing plant in Michigan, Ford has given a “Stop-build” and an “In-transit stop-ship” order for the F-150 Lightning electric pickup truck. This means, the manufacturing of the truck has been halted and those units that were on their way to dealerships, have been stopped in the middle of shipping.

Ford has stated that they have found a potential battery issue as a part of their pre-delivery quality inspection procedure and will be working towards resolving it before resuming production and shipping.

However, Ford hasn’t claimed any kind of timeline for the resumption of production, and it totally depends on the engineering team that is trying to find the root cause of the potential issue and resolve it.

We previously experienced several recalls and issues with new products whenever they were launched. And in the initial period, you’re likely to face some kind of issues with a newly launched car. With respect to that, the Ford F-150 is a revolutionary, and pretty much the first of the many future electric SUVs to come in the future. So, it is justified if the car has some kind of issues that needs to be fixed.

After all, it is not as severe as Chevy Bolts catching fire out of nowhere.

But here’s the thing, you probably haven’t heard about anything regarding this issue among consumers and even if we searched for any similar issues faced by that can be related to Ford’s decision we only found a few. Nonetheless, the issues we found head to the exact same resolution as Ford people stating that they will be replacing the High Voltage Battery Module of the pickup truck free of cost.

So the issue is likely related to that only and it is great seeing Ford recognize their mistakes even before some major incident took place on the ground. However, if your delivery is scheduled sometime soon, and it has reached the dealer yard already, then you don’t need to worry as there is no “Stop-Sale” order imposed by the guys from the Blue Oval.

There’s some good news about the F-150 Lightning that we reported earlier, Ford is going to do in-house production of a new and more affordable type of battery that is designed with the Lithium-Phosphate-Iron (LFP) chemistry inside.

These batteries will be offering a similar range while costing much lesser. Since the launch of the F-150 Lightning, the cost of it has seen a steep upwards trajectory which has made some of the variants almost 40% costlier than before. With the introduction of this new battery chemistry, it is expected that the truck will become a bit more affordable again.

As of now, the Ford F-150 Lightning is going against electric trucks like the Rivian R1T, however, in the future, there will be several other new contestants like the RAM 1500 REV, GMC Sierra EV, and the Chevrolet Silverado EV.

The F-150 Lightning is offered in a total of two battery packs, a small 98.0 kWh pack, and a large 131 kWh pack depending on the trim you’ll choose. The former battery pack will provide you a maximum EPA range of 230 miles while the latter one is going to offer an EPA range of 320 miles on a single charge. Pricing starts at $55,974 for the Pro variant and the top-end Platinum model will make you shell out $96,874, over a $40,000 premium over the base unit.
