2022 BMW X4 M SUV for sale

The 2022 BMW X4 M is the premium compact crossover to go for those who'd want something super sporty and luxurious. The X4 is based on the X3, so there’s a lot of similarities between these two. The X4 M received minor changes for the year 2022, just like most of the cars in the BMW line-up. It now gets a more torquey engine with good performance, better handling, and a few changes to the interior.

Buying Advice

The 2022 BMW X4 M is the car to go for. It is extremely powerful, with a performance time of under 4 seconds (0-60 mph). This performance is matched with some very good handling and steering dynamics, with a well-tuned suspension as well. The interiors are lavish, and the safety package cannot get any better than what is offered for a car like the X4 M. You have the additional packages to aid you in ways, as well. The extra power and slightly retuned suspension on the M Competition do not make much of a difference.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The redesign has made the car more sporty on the outside and more aggressive on the inside. The X4 M is the point of convergence of a high-performance and a polarizing design. All this has been achieved without any changes to the price tag, and the range still starts at $74,395 for the X4 M. It’s not cheap, but it's a steal for what the X4 M offers. The car is expected out in the month of September, 2021. The 2022 BMW X4 M goes up against the 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC-63, the 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio and the 2022 Porsche Macan Turbo. These rivals also are in the line for some minor changes for the year 2022, but will remain the same mostly.

Features

The 2022 BMW X4 M will be available in two trims. These are the M and the M Competition. The M trim is priced at $74,395 whereas the M Competition’s pricing is around $81,395. The M and the M Competition are very similar to each other: the main difference is the power and torque output. Standard features on both the trims include leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, ambient lighting, heated front seats, adaptive LED headlamps, LED tail lights, panoramic sunroof, etc.

Fuel Economy
7.5/10

The fuel economy of the 2022 BMW X4 M is expected to remain the same as last year. That being said, the city mileage stands at 14 mpg, with a highway mileage of 19 mpg. THe combined mileage stands at 16 mpg. The M Competition is slightly lower at 15 mpg. The car has a fuel capacity of 17.2 gallons. This fuel economy is actually poor in terms of the segment, and much lower than its rivals.

In comparison with the rivals, the BMW offers the least range at 241 city miles and 327 highway miles. The Alfa Romeo is the most fuel-efficient of the lot, with a combined economy of 19 mpg, followed by the Porsche with a combined economy of 19 mpg as well. The Alfa has a higher highway efficiency as compared to the Porsche. The Mercedes takes the third spot, with its combined mileage of 18 mpg. The BMW X4 takes the last spot. In terms of range, it's the Macan that takes the top spot thanks to its 19.8-gallon fuel tank. It has a city range of 337 miles and a highway range of 436 miles, best in the segment. The Stelvio comes next, with its 287 city miles and 389 highway miles. The GLC63 is slightly behind the Alfa, wth a range of 278 city miles and 383 highway miles.

Interior
9.2/10

The interiors on the 2022 BMW X4 M are similar to the 2021 BMW X4 M. The fit and finish is excellent, and the materials used are of high-quality and have a robust feel. The layout of the controls and the center console is driver-focused, as expected. The center console sees a new screen, and is pretty direct and easy to read. The controls are easy to use, and feel sturdy. The view from the seats is decent, and with the adjustability options it's easy to find the right position as well. The interiors are taken from the X4, and the seats get M lettering as standard. The seats get Extended Merino leather upholstery as standard. The quality on the inside is premium, and there is an optional package to make this luxurious experience even better. There is also an option to cover the knee pads on the flanks of the center console with Alcantara leather. The M Competition gets M stripes on the seat-belts.

The 2022 BMW X4 M is a five seater car. The front seats on the X4 M are sport seats, with good support and nice side bolstering. The comfort levels are good as well, and long drives should not be a problem. The doors are large and wide, making getting in and out an easy task. There is a range of colors available to customize your interior as per your requirements as well. The trim also can be done in a few different finishes, something that when combined with the interior color can bring out the really luxurious interior finish. The features offered in the package make the interior a better place to be in, but we believe that these options should have been standard. One design piece that has received a change is the gear shifter, which has been completely redesigned and has a stitched leather finish.

In terms of interior space, the GLC 63 offers the most space in the front, followed by the X4. The Alfa offers a better front headroom, but has relatively low legroom. In the rear, the design body of the X4 has affected the available headroom and is the least in this competition. It has the least legroom as well. Average sized people will not have a problem, but tall people will mind the low space. It's the Stelvio that offers the most headroom. The Mercedes has the better legroom in the rear. There is no data on the Porsche’s interior, but comfort and space inside are excellent.

The standard cargo capacity is the most in the BMW and the Alfa, at 18.5 cu-ft. The other two offer a little less. In the case of maximum cargo space, the GLC suffers with its tiny 24.3 cu-ft space. The BMW X4 offers a decent 50.5 cu-ft, whereas the Porsche takes it up notch to 52.9 cu-ft. The Alfa offers the most at 56.5 cu-ft. Some of the interior features on the 2022 BMW X4 M are:

  • 14-way power adjustable and heated front seats
  • Interior air filtration
  • Ambient lighting
  • Power Tilt-and-Telescopic steering wheel
  • Leather upholstery
  • Dual-zone automatic climate control

How intuitive is the car’s infotainment unit?

The infotainment system on the 2022 BMW X4 M receives an upgrade, and now comes with a 12.3-inch touchscreen with the latest version of the iDrive interface, the iDrive 7.0 and features Live Cockpit Professional as standard.

A 12.3-inch digital reconfigurable instrument cluster comes as standard as well. The Executive package adds features such as Wi-Fi hotspot, a HUD and a wireless charging pad. Enhanced navigation, satellite radio, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 3D view and status displays for the assistance systems are shown as well. Some of the highlights of the infotainment system are:

  • iDrive 7.0
  • Bluetooth
  • SiriusXM
  • Navigation with live traffic information
  • Android Auto and Apple CarPlay
  • Wireless charging (opt)
  • HUD (opt)
  • Wi-Fi hotspot (opt)

Exterior
9.2/10

The 2022 BMW X4 M is a stylish crossover, but its looks might not appeal to everyone. The front end is similar to the X3 M, and the sloping roofline is more similar to the X6. The car has received some minor refreshments to the front and the rear. The 2022 BMW X4 M now looks more aggressive and sharper on the outside. At the front, the kidney grille extends into the front bumper and the air intake in the center is wider and flatter than last year. The grille is separated by the straight line in the center that houses a camera. The bumper is redesigned as well, and gets large air vents to allow more cool air to flow to the engine area. The headlamps have gotten slimmer than last year.

The side of the car is identical to the standard 2022 BMW X4, and there are no differences there. The side shows the sloping roofline that neatly integrates into the rear. The rear gets a high-gloss black finish spoiler. A carbon-fibre spoiler is also available. The rear tail lights have gotten slimmer as well. The main attraction is the bumper, which has been redesigned and gets a gloss-black finish. Two pairs of tailpipes hold the bumper in place, and also enhance the sporty look.

There is not much difference between the exterior on the two trims. The main difference is the tires. The M gets 20-inch wheels, whereas the M Competition gets 21-inch wheels. The M Competition wheels have a lower thickness than the tires on the M.

The most height of 63.9 inches is seen on the Porsche, which is slightly more than the BMW X4 M’s height of 63.7 inches. It also has the tightest wheelbase of the four cars. Place these four side by side, and it's hard to point out these differences. Some exterior features on the G550 are:

  • Adaptive LED headlamps
  • 20-inch 10-spoke wheels
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Power liftgate
  • Adaptive M suspension
  • Rear spoiler

Safety
8.0/10

The 2022 BMW X4 M is expected to feature the same safety features seen on the 2021 BMW X4 M. The 2021 BMW X4 M was not crash tested by the safety agencies, the NHTSA and the IIHS. The 2022 BMW X4 M is based on the BMW CLAR Platform, a modular platform that is designed for high strength and high rolling resistance, and uses steel, aluminium and/or carbon fibre for its build. The BMW X3 is similar to the X4, and uses the platform. The X3 was crash tested and received a top rating as well. Standard safety features on the 2022 BMW X4 M include airbags, traction control, stability control, ABS, and other passive features. The car gets a host of active safety features like collision warning, blindspot detection, lane departure, etc. The optional Driving Assistance Plus Package adds a few extra features as well. Some safety features on the 2022 BMW X4 M are:

  • Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Blindspot monitoring system
  • Speed limit information

  • Active lane keeping assist

Competition

2022 BMW X4 M vs 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLC 63

The 2022 Mercedes-Benz AMG is similar to the 2022 BMW X4 M in terms of exterior dimensions. Also, both the cars have a similar interior offering similar features with the same level of premium. The GLC 63 gets the Mbux system with a 10.25-inch touchscreen. In terms of performance, the GLC 63 has a Biturbo V8 compared to the twin-turbo I-6 of the X4 M.

The Merc also makes more power and torque, and is quicker as well. The BMW X4 M is less fuel efficient against the GLC 63. Both the cars have a similar spec in terms of safety. The BMW X4 M and the GLC 63 have similar ownership costs as well. In terms of pricing, the GLC 63 is more expensive than the BMW X4 M, by around $3000.

2022 BMW X4 M vs 2022 Porsche Macan Turbo

The 2022 Porsche Macan Turbo will get a few upgrades, and is a powerful contender against the 2022 BMW X4 M. The power and torque figures might not be as good as the BMW or the Merc or even the Alfa, but the Macan is a great driver. It has excellent handling and steering characteristics. The Macan excels with its strong low-end and mig-range compared to the rivals, and offers a punch in that range.

The car is slightly smaller than the BMW, but the interiors of both the cars are very much on par. Both the cars have not been safety rated, but the Porsche is as dependable as the BMW. In terms of pricing, the Porsche Macan is more expensive than the M Competition also, making it more expensive than the BMW X4 M by around $4000.

2022 BMW X4 M vs 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio

The 2022 Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio packs in a smaller engine, but makes a lot of power and torque over the 2022 BMW X4 M. It has top performance numbers as well. The car in 2022 will have some minor changes but nothing major. The Alfa Romeo is also more fuel efficient than the BMW X4 M. Between the BMW and the Alfa, it's the Stelvio whose looks are more appealing.

The Stelvio has great handling and a strong chassis. The interiors are good, but the BMW has a plus one in this factor. In terms of safety, both the cars have not had any safety tests done. The one point where the BMW beats the Stelvio is the pricing: the BMW is priced at $74,395 whereas the Alfa is nearly ten thousand dollars more expensive at $84,300.

Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW X4 M comes with enthralling performance, lots of power and is decent on space as well. The interiors are luxurious, and there’s a lot of features on offer. The car comes well-packed with safety features also. The design is not something that everyone will like, but it does tend to grow on you. Frankly, the X3 M is a very similar car and also has a lot of similarity with the X4 M. The X4 does have a larger space. All in all, the 2022 BMW X4 M is worthy to be picked. Unless you have a liking for the BMW-specific ‘sloping roofline’, the X3 M might just be a good option.
