2022 BMW X6 for sale

The 2022 BMW X6 sees some changes with respect to its trim lineup, features and optional packages. Starting at a MSRP of $67,350, it’s a more flamboyant version of its more practical sibling, the X5. The trim with RWD configuration is no longer available for 2022, increasing the price of the 4WD base trim by almost $2300. Available in two powertrain options, the base 3.0L inline-6 engine produces 335 hp.

The 2022 X6 ‘sports activity coupe’ as BMW preferably calls it, is available in three different trims: xDrive40i, xDriveM50i and M. The performance oriented M trim costs about $109,400 and deserves a separate review. The BMW X6 sacrifices some of the cargo capacity and headroom in favour of the coupe styling while the interiors are uber-luxurious. It faces competition from the likes of Porsche Cayenne Coupe, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q8

Buying Advice

We would recommend the xDrive40i trim for its better value proposition. It costs nearly $20,000 less than the xDriveM50i trim and offers many desirable features that one would expect in its price range, losing out only on horsepower and some track skills under the sleeve. We would also suggest the Executive Package for $3,550 and Luxury Seating Package for $1600 to make your xDrive40i trim truly comfy and tech laden.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

“This midsize luxury SUV prioritizes form over function and gives people a more coupe-like profile in their family hauler.”- Edmunds

The 2022 BMW X6 can accommodate up to five passengers and is expected to deliver sporty handling even with a SUV form factor. The standard xDrive system will help with better traction control in different driving conditions. With two powertrain options to choose from, buyers can opt for the burbling V8 engine in the xDrive M50i trim. The base trim can tow up to an impressive 7,200 pounds with available factory installed trailer hitch.

Starting at a price of $67,350, the xDrive40i trim provides many desirable features like panoramic moonroof, HiFi sound system with 205 watts of output, 12.3-inch instrument console and 12.3-inch central touchscreen display stacked side-by-side and called as the Live Cockpit Professional, multi-zone climate control system, power-adjustable front sport seats and much more. It can offer a payload capacity of 994 pounds and a cargo capacity of 27.4 cu-ft

Features
8.5/10

Barring the more powerful and dynamically capable X6 M trim, the X6 is available in two trims only. The higher X6 M50i trim will come very close to the signature M experience but is tuned for comfort rather than outright performance. It also costs much less than the exorbitantly priced X6 M trim. The prices start 67,350 and go up to $86,250 for the X6 M50i trim. The 2022 BMW X6 might appear super expensive to some but it offers more bang for your buck too.

The 2022 BMW X6 remains virtually unchanged as compared to the outgoing model with some minor changes. So, we can expect it to be available at dealerships by year end. Also, as the official specifications and prices are announced by BMW, we can anticipate that it will be up for grabs early next year. The 2022 X6 offers attractive optional features as well to muscle up the already fit X6.

Fuel Economy
7.9/10

The 2022 BMW X6 xDrive40i is rated at 21 MPG in the city, 25 MPG on the highway and 23 MPG in combined conditions. The xDriveM50i is rated at 16 MPG in the city, 22 MPG on the highway and 18 MPG in mixed driving conditions. With a fuel tank of 21.9 gallons, the xDrive40i can travel up to 503 miles while the xDriveM50i can travel up to 394 miles in combined driving conditions.

The BMW X6 is surprisingly more fuel efficient than its rivals. It also offers higher range despite having a smaller tank than its competitors. It is followed by Porsche Cayenne, Mercedes-Benz GLE and Audi Q8 with their respective combined range figures. So the BMW X6 is the range king while the Audi Q8 loses out in the range battle.

Interior
7.9/10

“The regular X5 is more upright and practical, but the 2022 BMW X6 is just as luxurious inside and better suited for extroverts.”- Car and Driver

The 2022 BMW X6 has a luxurious and opulent interior design. One can witness the usage of high quality materials inside the cabin and the dashboard layout is ergonomic. The front seats are 16-way power-adjustable with power seatback side bolster support and manual cushion extension. The passenger seat gets the same treatment. The seats are heated while Vernasca leather is standard in the X6 and SensaTec faux leather is present on the dashboard with glossy wood trim

The X6 has seating for five, but taller people might not find it favorable to be seated in the rear row for too long, thanks to the sloping roofline, which hurts the headroom. The sloping roofline also makes the rearward visibility a pain, so you have to depend on your rearview camera. The X6 offers 27.4 cubic feet, which is lower than BMW’s own X5. If you want more space, the rear seats fold in a 40/20/40-split to expand the cargo area. This takes the total space to 59.6 cubic feet. Also, you get decent storage options inside the cabin.

The sloping roofline really hurts the headroom of the X6, albeit it does affect all of the SUVs mentioned. The front row spacing is decent in all of the German SUVs, but when it comes to the rear row, the BMW suffers. The legroom in the Audi is the best, while the Benz also trails close by. For the rear seat passengers, other SUVs would be a better option. Mercedes-Benz GLE offers the most cargo space, followed by Audi Q8, BMW X6 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe.

The 2022 BMW X6 comes with two 12.3-inch displays placed adjacent to each other, called the Live Cockpit Professional. It runs on the iDrive 7.0 operating system, being intuitive and easy to use. However, some of the menus can be quite confusing. Some of the standard features include HD radio, SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, USB ports, and navigation.

A 10-speaker surround sound system is standard. You can upgrade to features such as a Wi-Fi hotspot, wireless charging, and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound system. The M50i also allows you to get a Bowers & Wilkins 20-speaker sound system for better musical experience while on the way back home. Some of the standout interior features are:

  • Multi-zone climate control system
  • 3-stage heated front seats
  • Power adjustable steering column
  • Comfort access keyless entry
  • 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats
  • Panoramic moonroof
  • 12.3” infotainment display running iDrive 7.0
  • 16-Speaker Harman Kardon sound system
  • Optional 20-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system
  • Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
  • Foldable rear seats
  • Speed sensitive volume control

Exterior
7.9/10

“Essentially, the 2022 BMW X6 and several of its rivals are stylized alternatives to the standard midsize SUVs with large, boxy rear profiles.”- Edmunds

The 2022 BMW X6 looks mesmerising and handsome. The front fascia imbibes two aggressive LED headlamps that are reminiscent of the other BMW sedans. The signature kidney grille is very much a part of the 2022 model as well. The front bumper looks good and has air vents on both sides for better cooling.

The side profile looks like a raised sedan with a coupe styling. The mirrors are powered and heated. The 20-inch alloy wheels complement the overall styling while the satin aluminium exterior trim looks elegant. The rear profile is exciting as well with super-sleek LED tail lights and sporty chrome exhaust tips. It is available in nine and eleven exterior non-metallic/metallic color options.

The BMW X6 offers a high ground clearance and a long wheelbase, which doesn’t look all that performance-y on its own, but the coupe design makes up for it. The Mercedes-Benz is taller, BMW X6 is wider and Audi Q8 is longer. The BMW X6 handles well despite being a bulky car and sitting on a longer wheelbase. Some of the standout exterior features are:

  • Satin aluminium trim
  • 20-inch V-spoke alloy wheels
  • Chrome exhaust tips
  • Power folding and heated exterior mirrors
  • Shadowline exterior trim (xDriveM50i)
  • Aerodynamic kit (xDriveM50i)

Safety
9.0/10

“The Bimmer is available with a plethora of standard and optional driver-assistance technology.”- Car and Driver

The 2021 BMW X6 has not been tested by either NHTSA or IIHS, so we do not have any concrete ratings on how well it fares in a crash test. Since the 2022 X6 will also be a carryover model, it won’t be tested either. However, BMW builds some of the safest cars on the planet and uses the best materials for the construction of their vehicles, which makes their cars very strong and resilient to collisions. The 2022 BMW X6 is equipped with many passive and active safety features to ensure the safety of its passengers. Some of the standout safety features are:

  • Dynamic cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors
  • Rearview camera
  • Front collision alert
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Lane departure warning
  • Lane-keep assist
  • Tire pressure monitoring system

Competition

2022 BMW X6 vs 2021 Porsche Cayenne Coupe

The X6 and Cayenne are both great choices, but the Cayenne is more suited towards being more athletic. Even though the Cayenne cannot match the Bimmer in terms of speed, it is still offering better handling. The interior of the Porsche is also very well-designed with premium materials flooding the place.

Design-wise too, some might prefer the Cayenne, while some might like the look of the X6 more. The Bimmer is a more practical vehicle, offering better cargo space and fuel economy. And also, the X6 costs less.

2022 BMW X6 vs 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class

The GLE-Class is another sporty coupe with a sloping roofline. The GLE is better suited on the highway as it can go really fast, even faster than the X6, though not by a big margin. The Mercedes-Benz also offers excellent interior quality.

It also has tons of modern and innovative safety features to keep passengers safe. Once again, the Bimmer comes out on top with better fuel economy, but the GLE is cheaper and provides fierce competition to the X6.

2022 BMW X6 vs 2021 Audi Q8

The Audi Q8 is a far more practical vehicle than the BMW X6 since it offers tons of space inside and also has more cargo storage capacity. Though the Audi is somewhat similarly matched with the X6 in terms of performance, it suffers from worse fuel economy.

It’s also heavier than the Bimmer, and though it handles great, it is not on a similar level as compared to the X6. When it comes between these two, it depends on personal preference.

Final Verdict

The 2022 BMW X6 is a carryover model and offers a great blend of high-performance and sporty handling. Though it receives very fierce competition from other German coupes, it has its own charm. The X6 is a very safe vehicle with a great quality interior and excellent range on a full gas tank. However, it has less cargo space than some of its rivals, and its design might not sit well with everyone. If you are looking for performance and athletic handling in a SUV then the X6 will have you covered.
