The 2022 BMW M5 carries forward without any changes, which means the line-up is the same. The M5 is available for a price of $103,700 for the base model while the M5 Competition costs up to $111,100 excluding the destination charge. People looking for a bit more performance can opt for the all-new M5 CS variant that costs $142,000. It raises the bar for driving enthusiasts with its weight-saving measures and higher power output than the regular M5.

The M5 is a luxurious car but it is focused on performance. Hence, you get several optional performance gears to amp up your driving experience. The M Driver's package includes a one-day high-performance driving class and raises the top speed to 190 MPH. The $3,350 Executive package adds heated rear seats, ventilated and massaging front seats, soft-close doors, and many more.

The M5 is also available with the Driver Assistance Professional package that consists of Active Driving Assistant Pro. It is a semi-autonomous hands-on driving feature that functions with traffic jam assistant, adaptive cruise control, evasion aid, lane control assistance, and automatic emergency braking. This package can be equipped for $1,700.

Fuel economy isn't a big priority for customers looking for a car like the 2022 BMW M5. However, these cars do need to comply with the regulations. Thus, the M5 has achieved an EPA rating of 15 MPG in city driving and 21 MPG on the highway cruising. Combined, you can expect up to 17 MPG, which is pretty decent for a performance sedan. Despite making 17 horses more, the M5 Competition's fuel ratings are identical to the M5 sedan, which is a good thing. The M5 is fitted with a large 20.1-gallon fuel tank so that the sedan can provide a driving range of 342 miles in mixed proportions. Thanks to its large tank, the M5's mileage is pretty competitive in the segment.

The larger engine does not do any favor in terms of fuel economy to all of these vehicles, But the Mercedes-AMG E 63 S edges out ahead of the M5 with slightly better fuel estimates. It also gets a larger fuel tank which helps boost the overall range. The supercharged engine in the Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing drinks more juice than its rivals and it's quite obvious. On the other hand, the other German rivals return similar fuel economy figures and it is the Porsche Panamera that leads the pack in terms of range, thanks to its massive gas tank capacity.

The 2022 BMW M5 might perform like a fully-fledged supercar, but at the end of the day, it is a comfortable and luxurious sedan. The M5 has an elegant leather interior with plush seating that is next only to the flagship 7 series. The interior and dashboard layout has largely stayed the same. The M Competition model adds M Color seat belts to stand out from the crowd. The front bucket seats offer good cushioning and bolstering. The seats can be power-adjusted in 20 ways and come standard with heated functionality. The three-spoke leather steering wheel is also power-adjustable but rather looks straightforward. Even the rear seats are spacious enough and can be upgraded with heated functionality. 

There is ample passenger space across both rows of seating. You can easily cram in five people due to the large legroom offered in the rear seats. BMW also introduces the M5 CS, which is the new entrant on the block and gets notable features on the interior front, such as M carbon-fiber front seats and rear bucket seats. This Bimmer's dashboard is dominated by dual 12.3-inch displays that sit on top. It runs BMW's latest iDrive infotainment system which is super smooth and one of the best in the business. This system includes nifty features like wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Wi-Fi hotspot, voice recognition, etc. Using the gesture controls can be tacky but it performs basic functions neatly. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon sound's quality is mesmerizing. 

When it comes to cargo capacity, the M5 offers 18.7 cu-ft of cargo space. You could store enough luggage for a family of four. The rear seats can be folded in a 40/20/40 split for carrying more items. However, the hatchback-like profile of the Audi RS 7 benefits from class-leading cargo capacity and also offers plenty of cabin space for all its passengers. The CT5-V Blackwing is equally spacious inside its cabin but struggles in terms of trunk space. The Panamera is pretty spacious too but wows everyone with the impeccable fit & finish and abundant customizations on offer.

The exterior styling of the 2022 BMW M5 is definitely impressive, but some might argue that it lacks drama which other brands do offer. It looks so much more aggressive, particularly around the front bumper. It's a much more angular design with lots of black trim. The LED laser lights look really striking and sleek. The infamous kidney grille is still manageable on this car and does not look out of place. The muscular lines and hood creases make it feel more muscly than its rivals.

Coming to the side, there's a fin above the front wheel arch. From the rear end, the M5 has a seriously mean look. The 20-inch wheels keep this sedan 5.0 inches above the ground. The standard sports exhaust system and a super chunky diffuser really sound meatier. Just like the front ones, the LED taillights also boast an attractive look. Similar to the interior, the 2022 BMW M5 colors list is pretty extensive and buyers can choose from a wide range of 13 paint options as standard. 

The Audi RS 7's wheelbase is comparatively smaller than the M5 but its cabin is spacious. This aids in better handling around the corners. The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing's overall length measures 194.9 inches, the shortest here while the Panamera GTS is the longest. That said, the minor difference in the dimensions won't make much difference in terms of maneuverability. In terms of design though, it's an even battle with all manufacturers going for the sporty muscular designs. In our opinion, it is the RS 7 that shines the brightest and turns most heads on the streets.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Audi RS 7

The Audi RS 7 definitely looks stunning which helps it stand out but it is way more expensive than the M5. The M5 obliterates the RS7 in terms of performance, and raw power. It does offer an equally luxurious interior but the main highlight is its tech-forward cabin and its class-leading cargo volume. Audi also offers a complimentary maintenance warranty. That said, choosing either of these sedans comes down to personal preference.

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing

The biggest attraction for the CT5-V Blackwing is the supercharged V8 under its hood and the considerably lower starting price. It offers similar levels of performance and comes loaded with plenty of features and safety aids. That said, while the ride is a bit more comfortable in the Cadillac, enthusiasts would want the agile handling and the premium cabin of the M5. Add to that the value of the BMW badge and higher resale value, the 2022 M5 is the one that we prefer. 

2022 BMW M5 vs 2022 Porsche Panamera GTS

The Porsche Panamera GTS in all its glory outshines the majority of its competitors in terms of premium appeal and best-in-class handling. While the customizations and options make it way out of the league for many, the M5 offers plenty of creature comforts as standard. The BMW M5 interior also feels more spacious and hence brings the match between the two at a deadlock. Therefore, if budget isn't a constraint, the Panamera GTS should be the pick here, but the BMW too offers great value to its buyers. 

The 2022 BMW M5 is an excellent sedan that delivers exhilarating performance as well as the comfort levels of a limousine. As long as you don't find the urge to go for the fastest ever M5 ever in the form of the M5 CS, it is best that you stick with the regular M5 as it offers all the oomph and grunt that you expect from an M5 but with all the modern bells and whistles.
