2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe for sale

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is a more practical approach to the sedan segment despite its coupe-styled sliding roofline. A rare breed of a four-door coupe that revived the top-of-the-line 8 Series. Being one of the sleekest BMW sedans, the 8 Series Gran Coupe is coming for the 2022 model year with its mid-cycle refresh.

Buying Advice

We would highly recommend the BMW 840i xDrive which is available in an all-wheel-drive configuration. It offers features such as Integral active steering, the latest Live cockpit, 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a panoramic moonroof.

Comparative Analysis against Competition

The 8 Series consists of the standard 840i sedan, powered by a 6 cylinder engine and a V-8 powered M850i Gran Coupe version. BMW has bigger plans with the 8 series as you'll be getting an ALPINA B8 with a much powerful V-8. The 8 Series Gran Coupe will be available at a starting price of $85,000.

Features

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe comes in two trims which include a base 840i and the 840i xDrive trim, priced in the range of $85,000 and $88,000, respectively. The main distinguishing factor for both trims is that the former is rear-wheel drive while the latter is all-wheel drive. The features and specs remain the same on both trims.

Some optional features include - glass controls ($950), Multifunctional seats ($750), and Bower's and Wilkins diamond surround sound system ($3,400).

We Recommend

We would highly recommend the BMW 840i xDrive which is available in an all-wheel-drive configuration. It offers features such as Integral active steering, the latest Live cockpit, 10.25-inch touchscreen, and a panoramic moonroof.

Fuel Economy
7.0/10

As the engine options will remain unchanged, the 8 Series Gran Coupe will deliver similar fuel economy as the previous year. With the 840i trim, you'll get 22 MPG in the city, 29 MPG on the highway, and a combined 25 MPG. The xDrive version will offer a slightly lower MPG. With an 18.0 gallon tank, the 8 Series has a good enough range for a performance sedan.

With its base engine, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe has the best in class fuel economy. The Audi A7 Sportback is the closest one where the AMG GT 43 takes the third spot. If only BMW offered a bigger tank, the 8 Series Gran Coupe would have had a better range.

Interior
9.0/10

With its high-end Merino leather upholstery, the interior of the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe available in 8 elegant color options. You can expect a new Lavalina leather upholstery with 2022 MY. The cabin is designed with ash grain metallic wood trim where the walnut trim is a new addition.

The comfort with the 840i Gran Coupe is unmatchable. With the front bucket seats, you have up to 14-way seat adjustments, articulating backrests, bolster, and lumbar support. The heating function is available for both front and rear seats. You also have front and rear dual-zone air-conditioning as well.

With a maximum seating capacity of up to 5 people, the BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is quite spacious irrespective of its coupe-like rear styling. However, against the AMG GT 43, the 840i still doesn't stand a chance. With its cabin space, it might take over the rivals such as the Audi A7 Sportback and Porsche Panamera for once.

The offered cargo capacity in the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe may not be the best yet it is big enough to accommodate full-size luggage. The 15.5 cubic feet of space might not seem practical enough if compared with the rivals. Audi A7 Sportback may offer limited cabin space yet it has a massive trunk capacity which is the biggest in the segment. Standout interior features of the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe:

  • Merino leatherette upholstery and metallic wood accents
  • 4-zone automatic temperature control
  • Front and rear heating function
  • Massive panoramic sunroof
  • Comfort seating package
  • Carbon fiber inlays

2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe: Infotainment and Connectivity

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe will remain equipped with the 10.2-inch touchscreen infotainment display. It is powered by the multi-input iDrive 7.0. It is very unlikely to get the rumored 8.0 version. The infotainment is operated through a center-mounted touchpad controller. The standard features with the infotainment include wireless phone connectivity, SiriusXM 360L radio subscription for 12 months, Apple car play, and Android auto. The infotainment will support a WiFi hotspot with a 3-month complimentary trial.

There are 16 Harman Kardon and a 464W amplifier as well as a digital signal processor. You can avail of 16 surround sound speakers by Bowers and Wilkins with a 1375W premium amplifier. The BMW live cockpit professional offers a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster that properly optimizes driver's info. There's a heads-up display so that the driver keeps his eyes on the road. Highlight infotainment features of the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe:

  • BMW iDrive system
  • Touchpad controller
  • SiriusXM 360L
  • Wi-Fi Hotspot
  • Harman Kardon speakers
  • Optional Bowers Wilkins speakers

Exterior
8.0/10

A lot is expected from the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe as BMW was conducting rigorous testing. As per the rumors and spy shots, the 8 Series will get a mild facelift. The upgrades will be confined to the lights and bumpers. Thankfully the grille will remain untouched to keep the authenticity of the kidney grille alive. The chrome-finished signature grille is paired with a mean-looking set of LED headlamps. The reworked bumper might get more aerodynamic air vents.

Above the roaring chrome tip exhausts, there's a lip spoiler aligned with thin LED tail lamps. The sporty stance of the 8 Series looks sleek rather aggressive from the sides. The personalization options include an array of 11 exterior colors, Shadowline trim and optional metallic paint, and an aerodynamic kit as well. The 840i Gran Coupe gets 19-inch M double-spoke orbit grey wheels as standard.

The 8 Series Gran Coupe has the most aerodynamic design for a sedan. With its moderate weight, it is the longest sedan as compared to its rivals. The low ground clearance and a short stance keep it closer to the road for a low center of gravity. AMG GT 43 weighs more than the rivals while the Porsche Panamera offers wider tracks than the 8 series. Highlighted exterior features of the 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe:

  • Adaptive LED headlamps
  • Shadowline exterior trim
  • 19-inch wheels as standard
  • Aerodynamic kit
  • Chrome tip exhausts

Safety
9.0/10

The BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is yet to be crash-tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS for the safety ratings. The 8-series Gran Coupe features ample safety technology and equipment. Most of the safety features come in an M-Sport package that adds driver-assist features such as Frontal Collision Warning with City Collision Mitigation. Some of the notable safety features include:

  • Forward collision warning with pedestrian detection
  • Auto emergency braking
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • Rearview camera
  • Drowsy driver monitor
  • Post-collision braking
  • Blind-spot monitoring
  • Front and rear cross-traffic alert
  • Lane keep assist
  • Evasive steering assist

Final Verdict

BMW is the true synonym of German engineering. The 2022 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe is the most stylish, opulent, and practical in the brand’s lineup with its space and comfort. With advanced mechanics and aerodynamics, the 8 Series delivers an unparalleled driving experience. The Turbocharged I-6 engine churns out enough power to take down the best in class AMG GT 43 with its crazy throttle response. It is a fully loaded package of the best stuff that you can expect from the German automaker for it sits on the top of the company’s lineup.
