The 2022 BMW 4 Series Coupe will be available in two variants with the 430i being the standard one and the M440i being the performance-focused one. The M440i is covered in a separate review. The 430i will be available in a standard RWD layout with an optional AWD layout under the xDrive tag. Feature-wise, the car comes loaded with them and gets a long list of optional packages along with more standalone features as well. Some of the standard features include power-folding and heated mirrors, Sunroof, Auto-dimming rear-view mirrors, Push-button start, power-adjustable front seats with driver memory settings, simulated leather upholstery, and a 10-speaker audio system among others. The standard safety techs include Forward collision mitigation, Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and Parking sensors. Some of the standalone options are a power-operated trunk lid, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a Drive recorder, and a Wireless charging pad among other features. Coming to the packages, the names of the available ones are Convenience Package, Premium Package, Executive Package, Parking Assistance Package, Driving Assistance Professional package, M Sport package, and Dynamic Handling package.

Release Date

The 2022 4 Series coupe has been released in August 2021 and is expected to be available in the next couple of months.

Nowadays fun-to-drive coupes with compact yet punchy powertrains have become quite fuel-efficient too. The 2022 BMW 430i coupe will return an impressive city mileage of 24mpg along with an equally commendable highway mileage of 33mpg. The combined mileage rating stands at 27mpg. With a decently sized gasoline tank of 15.6 gallons, the car offers 369 miles of city driving range along with 515 miles of highway driving range, translating to fewer stops while out on a long trip.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe has slightly lower city mileage than the 430i yet has an identical highway mileage as the latter. The combined mileage rating of the car is marginally lower at 26mpg as opposed to the 430i’s 27mpg. However, it gets a bigger 17.4-gallon gas tank, offering overall better driving range figures than the 430i. The Audi A5 Coupe has similar city, highway, and combined mileage figures to the 430i and gets an almost similar sized gas tank to the latter as well. The Lexus RC350 takes the bottom place here with the least amount of city, highway, and combined mileage ratings. But, with a sizable gas tank of 17.4 gallons, it manages to deliver some acceptable driving range figures, yet it remains at least 70 miles lower than the competitors. 

The 2022 BMW 430i might look quite polarizing on the outside, but its interior deserves all the praise owing to its impeccable build quality and oodles of features along with excellent comfort levels. Starting with the dashboard design, it gets a driver-oriented design with the controls and the infotainment display aligned towards the driver’s seat. There is a fair share of controls within the dashboard and the center stack along with the steering wheel, making for a rather busy front seat area. All the controls are easy to operate though, with premium quality materials and the knobs are nicely put together with metal surrounds.

By default, the cabin gets a simulated leather upholstery but can be upgraded to premium leather one for a premium. In its base iteration, the cabin offers a plethora of features but the myriad of optional packages and standalone features takes the count to another level. The headroom and legroom are more than adequate at the front seats and the power adjustments combined with the memory settings further enhances the experience. The rear seats are quite impractical though with barely enough space for kids only. They can double up as a storage space for those extra luggage items though. The trunk space is decent at 12 cu-ft.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe gets a beautifully crafted and premium cabin. With the design language of the S-Class slowly seeping into the lower placed sedans of the brand, the cabin of the C-Class coupe looks actually costlier than the car really is. The interior has a soothing blend of elegance and sportiness but the all-digital gauge cluster makes for the typical modern touch every luxury vehicle from most of the brands are seeing now. The cabin offers a decent amount of space for the front seat passengers and the driver along with a wide range of features too. The rear seats are as impractical as the 430i but it is the case with a majority of the coupes in the segment. The Audi A5 Coupe has a well-designed cabin too with the focus more oriented to sportiness. The sleek dashboard design with a practical and functional center stack leaves no room for complaint in the usability aspect. The comfort from the front seats is excellent and the features offered are quite a handful too. At the rear, the seats have slightly more headroom and legroom on offer making it decently comfortable for medium-sized adults over a short distance. The Lexus RC350 gets a mildly retro-modern touch to its interior design especially on the dashboard with its button-heavy layout. The small digital information display and the infotainment screen are the only two modern touches inside with the rest of the dashboard and the center stack filled up with buttons for several controls. The comfort and luxury on offer are top-notch but it misses that excitement you’d find on the German rivals here. Additionally, apart from the interior space and design, each competitor lacks the cargo space that the Audi possesses having trunk volumes just under 11 cu.-ft mark.

How intuitive is the infotainment system?

The 2022 BMW 430i Coupe will get a standard 8.8-inch infotainment display with the latest iDrive 7 software running in it. The user interface is smooth and fluid with a user-friendly layout.

The system can be controlled via touch inputs or the rotary knob on the center attack with a touchpad integrated on top of it. Features on offer are plenty with wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, in-built navigation, and Wi-Fi hotspot as some of the standard features.

As mentioned before, the BMW 4 Series got a polarizing yet unique front grille design with the 2021 redesign. It makes the car look way sportier and more aggressive than before but at the cost of the elegance, it possessed. The LED headlamp units sit flush against the front fascia with the LED running lights being quite noticeable at all times.

The hood gets a bit of muscular design with some sculpted design and lines while the rakish roofline oozes the “Coupe” appeal at its best. The side profile is simple and sleek with some mild styling bits yet the rear end looks quite busy with the LED taillights and the dual-tone bumper with the dual exhaust tips making a sporty appearance too, like the front end.

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe gets a way better design than the 430i with a subtle blend of elegance and aggressiveness executed in an almost perfect manner. The front grille with its mesh design and chrome detailing takes care of the elegance part while the LED headlamps and the aggressive front grille design take care of the sporty appeal part. The car feels and is slightly more compact than the 430i but in a good way. The Audi A5 Coupe wears, perhaps, one of the best exterior designs in the segment, and its blacked-out and angry-looking front fascia design doesn’t look a bit exaggerated as well. There are quite a bit of design elements and lines running across the car but it gives it an overall strong character. The Lexus RC350 looks like the angriest kid on the block with Lexus’ new spindle grille design and several sharp styling cues.

Even though the 2022 430i is underpinned by the latest 3 Series, it comes with more safety techs to offer all-around protection against various scenarios. The car didn’t get crash-tested by both the IIHS or the NHTSA but has adequate safety techs and a strong build quality speaking for themselves. Some of the safety techs include Forward collision mitigation, Blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and parking sensors as standard.

BMW 4 Series Coupe vs Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe

The Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe gives tough competition to the 430i and with a refreshed design expected for the 2022 model, the C-Class is all set to become more enticing and visually appealing than the latter as well.

Performance-wise, the C-Class is slightly on the lower side but the difference is almost negligible. On the inside, the car is as appealing and comfortable as the 430i too but has lower trunk space.

BMW 4 Series Coupe vs Audi A5 Coupe

The Audi A5 Coupe goes neck-to-neck with the BMW 430i in terms of performance, practicality, and fuel efficiency. Moreover, the A5 has more practical rear seats with an appealing interior design and a plethora of features. The driving experience is also better in the A5 with its brilliant Quattro system at play.

BMW 4 Series Coupe vs Lexus RC350

The Lexus RC350 is the most old-school and radical competitor to the BMW 430i with its naturally aspirated V6 motor and retro-modern interior design as compared to the ultra-modern cabin of the latter. Performance-wise, the RC350 is as good as the 430i but lacks severely in the fuel economy department. 

The BMW 4 Series Coupe is a decent performer in the segment when gauged against its immediate rivals. With the 2021 upgrade, the car lost its elegance yet gained a set of strong attributes such as a plush cabin and a strong set of engines starting from the punchy base 2.0-liter unit. With a myriad of optional features and a handsome list of standard features, the 2022 BMW 4 Series coupe is a decent alternative to some of its rivals.
